Dr Timothy Hawthorne
BVSc (Hons) BSc (Hons) CertAVP MRCVS

Dr. Timothy Hawthorne grew up around racing and equestrian sport from a young age. Raised on a Thoroughbred stud on the Darling Downs, Queensland, he developed a passion for racing, frequently attending the races to watch his parent’s horses. At 19, Dr. Hawthorne, completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Molecular Biology, then took a y

ear out from academic studies to pursue his love for diving and the ocean. He was employed as a commercial scuba diver, exploring uncharted reefs off the Queensland coast!! The lure of a career in veterinary science drew him back to dry land; he wrote and published a thesis on Veterinary Parasitology the following year. From there, he graduated from the University of Queensland with a BVSc (first class honours). Dr. Hawthorne, worked for a mixed practice in Toowoomba, QLD before heading to England to pursue a career as an equine vet. He worked in Leicestershire for a year, before taking up a post at the world-renowned veterinary practice, Rossdales, based in the birthplace of thoroughbred racing, Newmarket. During his 5 years there he worked in many high profile racing stables, developing a scientific approach to managing racehorse lameness and wellbeing. He also worked with high profile performance horses including: grand prix dressage, showjumpers, eventers and endurance horses. In 2012, he was awarded the RCVS Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice(CertAVP), which he completed though the University of Liverpool, England. He has now set up TRH Equine Veterinary Services Pty Ltd, based in Guanaba (Gold Coast Hinterland). Dr. Hawthorne’s particular areas of interest include lameness assessment, radiography, ultrasonography and equine dentistry.

Tessa O’Brien one of our veterinarians has been treating a nasty leg wound on a 21 year old thoroughbred gelding.

The wound was too old to suture but with owner compliance and regular visits to change the bandage and reassess the wound over six weeks the wound has healed beautifully.
Various topical ointments were used each stage of the healing process Manuka honey, Flamazine and Prednoderm.

Moist wound healing conditions are important for successful healing allowing the tissue to heal faster. Below are some fantastic progress photos.

Some equine athletes may suffer from joint disease (osteoarthritis) and there are a variety of treatments to help manage this. Horses with joint disease may benefit from routine joint injections. We can help tailor your horse’s treatment by offering a variety of joint injection options to keep them performing their best.

Cortisone and Sodium Hyaluronate are commonly used to treat joint disease in horses. The cortisone acts to reduce inflammation whilst the Sodium Hyaluronate helps to maintain joint cartilage.

𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲
Pro Stride is the process where we use the horses’ own blood to concentrate the cells, platelets, growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines and injecting them back into the horse’s joint.

𝗜𝗥𝗔𝗣
IRAP is a regenerative process where we separate an antagonist protein from the horse’s blood and inject it back into the horses joint to stimulate white blood cells to produce anti inflammatory mediators and enzymes to reduce inflammation and treat joint disease.

Arthramid uses hydrogel technology that acts as a bio scaffold resulting in healthy regeneration of the joint tissue.

We hope all of our clients and their horses stayed safe during the recent weather event. We have received an influx of calls in regard to swollen legs, foot pain, dermatitis and conjunctivitis.

Here is some information on some of the symptoms you may notice and the causes and ways to prevent/treat these conditions.

Stabled horses🐴🏠
Symptom:
• Distal limb swelling, often all four limbs are affected.
Cause:
• Confinement resulting in lack of movement.
Prevention:
• Encourage movement to improve circulation of the lymphatic system.
• Apply poultice such as tuff rock to help reduce swelling.

Paddocked horses 🐎🌾
Symptom:
• Pastern Dermatitis also known as greasy heel, scabby lesions or red raw skin often seen around the heel bulbs and pastern.
• Cellulitis, often individual limbs are affected but in some cases can be seen in multiple limbs.
• Foot abscesses, the horse presents lame with a pulse (digital pulse indicates inflammation in the foot).
• Conjunctivitis and eye ulcers, conjunctivitis usually presents as thick discharge, redness and swelling of both eyelids. Usually eye ulcers present as one closed eye and the cornea may appear blue.
Cause:
• Standing in wet muddy paddocks can cause pastern dermatitis.
• A small cut or abrasion to the skin can allow bacteria to spread resulting in cellulitis.
• The hoof becomes soft and foot abscesses could begin to form.
• Conjunctivitis can be viral or bacterial. Eye ulcers can be from debris or from rubbing itchy irritated eyes from conjunctivitis
Prevention & Treatment:
• Washing mud off legs, apply a medicated shampoo such as Malaseb and towel dry.
• If the swelling is warm to touch and painful please call us to organise a vet visit so we can begin necessary treatment.
• If the horse becomes very lame please call us to organise a vet visit so we can begin necessary treatment.
• Clean eyes with warm salty water and cotton wool. If the eye is closed, an ulcer may be developing. Please call us immediately to organise a vet visit.

If you have any further questions or concerns please give us a call on 0417 292 705.
