You’ve heard of story dogs….we’ve got reading assistance horses here!
They are very helpful with bookwork and study, Bandit even tried to climb into the yurt to get closer to the action.

These cuties had their first dental exam yesterday and were very brave even though they weren’t quite sure about it all. Ear massages and treats helped :)
They were supported by their paca friends who came up to check me out very closely…

The floods are creating stagnet breeding grounds for mosquitoes. With the emergence of Ross River, West Nile & now the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis - avoiding mosquito bites is the best defence. For your horse that means rugs, masks, insecticides & restricted grazing when mosquitoes are most active🐴.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that I have been getting out and about a little bit and seeing some horses recently (without the littlest one). First up was my cheeky girl Millie :)
Those of you who have popped your horses on the list will hear from me in the next couple of weeks to make a time.
Looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

Our baby boy has arrived. We are loving the slow home time, getting to know him and gazing at his gorgeousness.
If I am a little slow to reply to messages, I apologise - am probably busy gazing at his gorgeousness!

Will be in touch later in the year to let you know when am planning on returning to work. Looking forward to seeing you all then :)

x Chris

FIRST CASE OF HENDRA VIRUS DETECTED IN NSW THIS YEAR

Hendra virus has been confirmed in a 17 year old unvaccinated thoroughbred horse on a property south of Murwillumbah, on the far north coast of NSW.

The owner noticed the horse was depressed and having difficulty breathing on Friday, 29 May. A private veterinarian took samples for Hendra virus exclusion, but the horse deteriorated and was euthanised over the weekend.

DPI is expecting to see an increased risk of Hendra virus this winter and has been working with Local Land Services to encourage private veterinarians and horse owners to take the necessary precautions including vaccinating horses, and wearing appropriate protective equipment.

In NSW, there have been 23 confirmed horse deaths as a result of Hendra virus since 2006, with most cases occurring on the north coast.

Horse owners are urged to remain vigilant and talk to their veterinarian about how they can reduce the risks of Hendra virus.

For more information about Hendra, visit the DPI website

We are hearing reports of a positive Hendra case south of Murwillumbah... A good time to check that your horses vaccinations are up to date.

The onset of cooler weather is a timely reminder to make sure your horse is vaccinated against Hendra virus.
While Hendra virus infection can occur throughout the year, in the past it’s been prevalent during the cooler months.
The registered vaccine helps prevent Hendra virus disease in horses. Vaccinating your horse is the most effective way to help manage Hendra virus disease. Vaccinating your horse also reduces the risk of Hendra virus transmission to people and other susceptible animals.
Talk to your veterinarian about the option of Hendra virus vaccination for your horse.

To all horse owners in fire affected areas:
Damage from smoke inhalation to horses’ lungs can take up to 4-6 weeks to fully heal.
So here are some recommendations to try to minimise damage.
