Ulla is getting to know her farrier Megan Matters from Hoofmatters. Sorry not sorry Megan for wet milk kisses down your neck. The hardships of being a fabulous farrier in foaling season.
When circumstances have made you not able to work your horse for a bit longer than you'd like to think about, it very much pays off paying attention to the horse you fetch from the paddock.
Greenfield's NF Odin is still young and green, the paddocks are beyond muddy and slippery and the weather has been less than pleasing more often than not for quite some time now, so the fact that this cuddly dude had a bit of "bratitude" show up once we entered the arena wasn't exactly surprising.
I got to admire a fair bit of hooning around and little moments of pretending he's a bronc before I had the presence of mind to film this little short snippet once he'd well and truly slowed down... I must say his trot is pretty darn nice! Thank goodness I'd had the presence of mind to "secure" his reins.
A bit more free lunging to blow some more steam, a while spent at the mounting block reminding him it's not a toy off of which I'm to be pushed and he finally came back to me with a focus towards me rather than the ants in his pants and his rival up on the hill.
I showed him I was listening to him telling me his mind and body weren't up for work by deciding NOT to work him. We had a lovely couple of laps on a loose rein walking around following my indication of direction and that was it just to let him slow down from his running around. He didn't need to be asked for something he wasn't there for today, and my need for accomplishment was fulfilled that the hoon I brought in allowed a quiet plod around with his mind on me and he showed his appreciation by leaning into me for extra cuddles and scratches afterwards.
Twice per year we have the wonderful Dr Oliver Liyou from Equine Veterinary & Dental Services Pty. Ltd. (EVDS) in to look after all our horses teeth. Oliver has powered through 17 dental examinations with multiple Woolf tooth extractions, a few routine x-rays and some minor repro follow ups, all without his trusty sidekick vet nurse. Today his visit coincided with the equally wonderful Megan Matters from Hoofmatters coming in to do the three stallions and three of the broodmares. We book it in as a dental party and with Megan here and the music playing it became a proper party atmosphere....
At some point in the first year of life all my foals will graduate from getting trimmed with a hoof rasp to using a grinder. Troll at 7weeks old thought my farrier's grinder was fascinating rather than scary while we did his mummy dearest, so we thought we'd see if he'd like to feel it... Turns out he prefers the grinder to the rasp for his second trim ever. The hardest part of the trim for him was balancing on three baby legs. This large boy will make someone very happy when he's ready for his new home in the autumn. Thank you Hoofmatters for always allowing my foals the ultimate of care and attention to detail.
Greenfield's Stud is proudly making available two gorgeous young pure bred Norwegian Fjord Horse geldings. We're also seeking expressions of interest for a mare and a stallion once their 2023 stud duties are complete. Please see our website for details.

For my birthday earlier this year I was gifted a new arena surface from mum and dad. We had to wait for it to be dry enough to drive in and out with the truck and for a lot of more urgent chores to be done. Trough dad's hard work manually unloading and me spreading most of the 15 X 4 cubic metre loads of woodchip from MI Organics I now have a beautiful new springy arena surface. A run through with the arena rake after the upcoming rain and we should be good to go once I'm cleared to ride after the stitches are out of my leg. Thank you so very much Mum and Dad. Love you to the moon and back!
Storm last night wreaked havoc. Luckily no horses harmed
Greenfields NF Lars 15.04.2020 - second ride back after essentially 6 months off since being started under saddle.
Greenfields NF Lars, born 10.10.2015.
It's not pretty yet, but this young man has potential in spades.
He was broken in in July 2019 and was lightly ridden until the fires covered us in smoke at the beginning of September. Until the smoke finally disappeared at Christmas he had maybe a handful of short rides on clear days, but was essentially turned out as he was also growing. Put a couple of rides on him in January, but due to being injured myself I didn't follow through.
This video is from his second ride back on 15.04.2020. This horse tries hard, and is a very fast learner. His laterals are coming, even tried them at the trot in that session. They're still slow and a bit messy, but that's a strength and fitness thing. I'm really happy with this young boy.
Lars would love to find his forever home. He's a loving boy, and if you're kind and fair he'll trust you in everything. The rate this horse picks up new skills as is a lot of fun, and I think he'll make a beautiful competitive mount in any discipline of your choice. He loved trying mounted games at his first ridden outing when he'd been under saddle for about a month, and would stand around snoozing while we waited for our show classes. For a young horse, he's extremely level headed.
