Ollie went missing just before Christmas and was found 8 days later, likely trapped in wire the entire time, enduring floods, storms, heat, and dehydration. Despite severe injuries, including maggot-infested wounds on his leg and sides, he survived. Initially, it was thought we may have to amputate the leg, but with the right medical care this prognosis changed.

Ollie has shown incredible resilience throughout his journey. He’s been enjoying being back home, with plenty of chicken dinners to boost his health and aid recovery. Ollie’s determination, strength, and unwavering spirit have amazed us all. Today marks the last day of his medical treatment with us and we want to congratulate this wonderful, brave soul for never giving up. A heartfelt thank you to Ollie’s family and all those who supported him, shared his journey and helped him come this far. He truly is a Christmas miracle! Love from all the team at Hinterland Equine & Ninderry Vet Surgery ❤️❤️❤️

Sharing this again in case you are interested in FEC after reading the two really important posts on worming circulated by Equine Veterinary & Dental Services Pty. Ltd. (EVDS) - give us a call if you’d like to know more: ☎️ 5446 8880

🐴🐴🐴

Q & A’s about Faecal egg counts:
What is the point of a faecal egg count (FEC)?
👉 It provides insight into the type of worm burden in your horse.

When should FECs be done?
👉 Perform a FEC before worming, to evaluate your current worming program. Following this, a FEC should taken place every 3 to 6 months.

What is the advantage of a FEC?
👉 If applied correctly, a FEC can help by decreasing reliance on worming treatments and provide information on which worm types should be targeted in your worming program.

The team at Hinterland Equine Veterinary Services will happily facilitate a FEC for your four-legged friends. Please contact the clinic to discuss.

Welcome back to FEC February and the second post in our mini information series! 🐴🪱💩

Today, we will be discussing “What is resistance and is my horse at risk?

Gone are the days where the recommendation was to deworm your horse every 6-8 weeks without a doubt, however over the last 50 years our indiscriminate use of dewormers has unfortunately led to the development of resistance. Similar to antibiotic resistance, anthelmintic resistance is the ability for parasites inside your horse to survive deworming treatments that were previously effective in killing them. This occurs due to selection pressure, where the resistant worms survive and continue to reproduce resulting in parasite populations largely consisting of resistant worms. The more we deworm, the faster this resistance develops.

The concerning part of this is that drug companies have not been able to develop any new products for deworming our horses and as such we must take steps to reduce the frequency of deworming and hopefully the development of widespread resistance.

When we look at your horse’s level of risk of developing clinical disease, we are assessing the horse based on their age, their environment and their shedding status. In general, horses between 5 and 15 years of age are at the lowest risk. Horses not co-grazing with youngsters and high shedders, that live in a closed herd environment are at lower risk than those exposed to higher stocking densities, poor pasture management and poor quarantine practices. However each horse and situation is different, and needs to be assessed on an individual basis.

Prevention is better than cure: The Importance of Desexing and Dental Care.
Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over three years of age have some form of dental disease? Dental disease can not only be painful and uncomfortable for pets, but the procedure to clean and remove teeth becomes more complicated and often more costly to treat the longer it is left untreated. Take advantage of our January special today!

Dental care and desexing are important for your pet's health and well-being.
🐾Prevents pain and discomfort: Regular brushing helps prevent cavities and mouth infections.
🐾Prevents serious health problems: Plaque buildup and infection can lead to dental disease.
🐾Keeps your pet healthy: Good oral hygiene can help your pet live a long and happy life.
🐾Desexing can reduce the risk of certain diseases and illnesses.
🐾Desexing also prevents unwanted litters: Can help prevent unplanned pregnancies.
🐾Reduces behavioral issues: Desexing can reduce aggressive behavior and the tendency to roam.
🐾Increases lifespan: Desexing can help your pet live longer
