Australian Lions Hearing Dogs

Australian Lions Hearing Dogs Since 1980, Australian Lions Hearing Dogs (ALHD) have provided Hearing Assistance Dogs to many hundreds of Australians, free of charge.
(45)

Each Hearing Assistance Dog costs ALHD upwards of $37,000 to train, deliver and support, and is gifted free of charge, to its deaf or hard of hearing new owner. One in six Australians has some form of hearing loss, with this number expected to rise to one in four by 2050. Severe or profound hearing loss currently affects close to 400,000 people. Whilst hearing loss impacts all ages, the numbers ar

e greater in older Australians. The impact of hearing loss varies for each individual and Australian Lions Hearing Dogs works with each recipient to create a solution that fits them. Many people who wear hearing aids or use assistive technology are unable to depend on these aids in difficult circumstances or after they go to bed. A Hearing Assistance Dog is often a welcome aid for many who suffer from hearing loss or deafness as it provides the companionship they crave in a socially isolated environment, and the safety and security from common dangers around the home. Hearing Assistance Dogs not only increase the quality of day-to-day living, they also help alleviate many of the conditions often associated with deafness and hard of hearing, these being depression, anxiety and communication withdrawal. As reported through a recent Federal Government Senate Inquiry into hearing, these conditions have been shown to contribute to cognitive decline and potentially increase by a factor of five, the likelihood of developing dementia. It’s not just the recipients themselves whose lives are enhanced by their Hearing Assistance Dog, there are also many reported benefits for family, friends and community.

The time has come for Mollie's puppies to have their first grooms! 🐾

Cece, Pippa, Jordy and Benny all came in as big balls of fluff and left looking nice and fresh for the upcoming warmer weather!

They were all very brave and handled the grooming sessions well. Some not too sure at the beginning but soon settled down and were very well-behaved.

Grooming isn't just about looking cute (though they definitely do! 😍). It’s also essential for keeping our pups healthy and happy. Regular grooming helps with coat maintenance, skin health, and socialisation – plus, it’s a great bonding time!

Below is their before and after shots – don’t they look great? 💙

A few weeks ago, during International Assistance Dog Week, we shared the wonderful story of the placement of Hearing Assistance Dog Harley with his recipient.

Last night saw the official celebration of Harley’s accreditation with his sponsoring Lions Club, the Lions Club of Blackwood.

This was a fantastic celebration of the life changing role that Harley has played in giving his recipient confidence, independence and most importantly a reason to smile as they navigate daily routines and activities.

We are forever grateful for the active involvement of Lions Clubs in the placement of our Assistance Dogs, we wouldn’t have such successful outcomes without their help in the follow up program.

It is with much delight that we are celebrating the accreditation of our 700th Hearing Assistance Dog Yannis!! Yesterday he completed his tasks of alerting to sounds required in the home and also his public role with his recipient. This means he showed his best behaviour out in public in shops and cafes, giving security and awareness in these environments.

We thank the hard work and dedication from the Lions Club of Southport, who supported through the follow up program. Pictured is one of wonderful volunteers from the Club along with Yannis and his recipient.

A massive thank you to all who were involved in Yannis journey which has given such an amazing and life changing outcome.

Yesterday we introduced Guardian Maddie’s second litter and today it is very fitting that we celebrate the accreditation of ALHD “Lola” from her very first litter! It’s wonderful to see these once tiny puppies develop, go through their training and then become life changing Assistance Dogs.

Lola passed her sound and public access test with her recipient and is now an accredited Hearing Assistance Dog.

We thank the hard work and dedication from the Lions Club of Busselton Inc, who supported through the follow up program. Pictured are a couple of wonderful volunteers from the Club along with Lola and her recipient.

Thank you to all that were part of Lola’s journey which has given such a positive and life changing outcome!

ALHD would like to congratulate PID Tony Benbow OAM, who was endorsed by Lions Clubs International as the preferred candidate for 3rd Vice President at the 2025 Lions International Convention in Mexico City.

Both PID Tony and Sue have been amazing supporters of ALHD for many years, and were recognised with the naming of “Ben” and “Bo” after them both. They, along with their Club, the Lions Club of South Vermont, have named and sponsored several puppies who have gone on to be amazing Assistance Dogs.

We all wish Tony and Sue all the best on their journey ahead.

To conclude International Assistance Dog Week we thought there's no better way than to introduce you to our newest litter of future Assistance Dogs 🐾

These sweet faces are from Guardian Krinkls second litter. They have been developing their own unique personalities and keeping very busy playing and exploring in their yard. These pups are already showing us how quick they are to learn new skills, even already sitting politely for yummy treats!

These gorgeous Border Terriers are almost 8 weeks old and will be joining their puppy carers next week. Thank you to all our volunteers who are giving these pups the opportunity to become life-changing Assistance Dogs!

A massive thank you also to our sponsors for coming on the journey with our pups and for giving them their adorable names. We look forward to keeping everyone updated as our pups grow into future Assistance Dogs 🧡

Did you know that today is International Cat Day? 🐱

We thought we would take this opportunity to introduce you to our beloved cats Penelope and Pants!

Penny is very friendly and will do absolutely anything for a cuddle. She loves the dogs and is never too shy to say hello to them, even if it's in their path of working sounds. You will normally find her curled up on her favourite trainers desk or overseeing the training sessions and giving it her purr-sonal touch. Penny will often steal a piece of fritz or cheese that's being used on a sound before the dogs have a chance to get it. She was adopted from YP Puppy Rescue as a kitten 5 years ago and is definitely a staff favourite!

Pants is our grumpy boy who loves to keep a low profile, but he can also be sweet when he wants. You'll generally find him keeping to himself either roaming around on the roof (even in the rain) or fast asleep on the bed in the training centre. Pants has a more low tolerance of the dogs and helps put them in their place when they get a bit over excited, he's definitely not afraid of handing out a cheeky paw swipe! Beware of Pants' belly trap - he will trick you into giving him a belly rub but then show you how he feels about it. Pants was a rescue kitten and is 13 years old - our favourite senior boy!

These cuties assist us with training for our Assistance Dog Programs. Our dogs are able to be placed with a recipient that has a cat, as our trusty helpers Penny and Pants are the best training tool. They act as a good cop/bad cop duo with Penny being the sweet and always willing to help one, where as Pants is more than happy to put the dogs in their place when needed. They both provide the dogs the opportunity to work with the distraction of them so they get comfortable being around cats.

Post your cat and how you're celebrating in the comments below!🐈‍⬛

Happy International Assistance Dog Week! 🧡

We thought we would start the week off by introducing you to recipient Kerry and her Hearing Assistance Dog, Harley!

“Harley has restored a lot of my confidence and faith in other people. He makes me smile every day. And he’s so wonderfully cheeky! My woolly mate has given me back a sense of hope and joy and confidence in life. We will continue to grow together, learning how to navigate different situations and daily routine. He will continue to make me smile.”

A fantastic milestone in our Medical Alert Dog program with “Airlie” passing her public access and task assessment!

Airlie was our first interstate placement and with the wonderful support of the Lions Club of Taylors Lake, she has done an amazing job in alerting her recipient when they had a change in their blood glucose levels outside of their normal target range. She is also trained to collect a hypo kit, get help in the home and to also use an alert button.

Thank you to all that were part of Airlie’s journey which has given such a positive and life changing outcome!

You may notice that our Medical Alert Dogs have gone from a green uniform into an orange one. As the organisation grows, we are transitioning all of our Assistance Dog Programs to the one colour so when seen out in public you know it is a Lions Assistance Dog.

ALHD “Sunshine” was placed last week and will now be giving her recipient independence and security both at home and in public.

Sunshine will be alerting with a one paw touch, which she is demonstrating beautifully in her picture, to sounds in the home like doorbells, timers and alarm clocks. Once she touches, she leads her recipient back to the source of the sound. The only sound that is different to this is the smoke alarm where she will touch and drop in a warning signal.

Sunshine was named and sponsored by Lions Club of Sunshine! We thank them for the wonderful support of her in the puppy program and then when she was in training.

We thank her puppy socialisers Kellie who initially socialised and then Bronte who cared for her in the later parts of puppyhood. A fantastic effort by all!

To round off National Diabetes Week, we welcome "Nessie" from Guardian Poppy's litter into our Medical Alert training. 💚

Nessie was named and sponsored by the Lions Club of Blue Lake City Lioness. We thank them for their support and are so excited to continue to share Nessies journey with them.

We thank Nessie's first puppy carer Carol and then Elanie to finish off her time in the Puppy Program. Their time and dedication has paid off to give Nessie the best head start to her Medical Alert Training. 🐾

Nessie will spend the next six months learning how to alert a low or high Blood Glucose Level (BGL) for her future type 1 diabetic recipient as well as her Public Access or out and about training. Nessie will also learn three life-saving tasks to help with in the home, the hypo-kit retrieve, get help and the emergency button.

Continuing on with National Diabetes Week, we congratulate Medical Alert Dog "Belle" and her recipient for their recent accreditation. 💚

Belle is a Diabetic Alert Dog who has been trained to alert to changes in blood glucose levels when they fall outside of the recipient's target range. Belle recently passed her Public Access Test and tasks with her recipient and is now an officially accredited Assistance Dog.

We thank the Lions Club of Athelstone-Rostrevor for their time and dedication for Belle's follow-up training during the twelve-week follow-up period. The dedication of their members has helped set up the pair for a long and successful working life together.

We also thank everyone else involved in Belle's journey to become the beautiful Medical Alert Dog that she is today.

Did you know that this week is National Diabetes Week? 💚

We can't think of a better way to start it off than to introduce you to our newest Medical Alert Dog trainee "Mimi".

Mimi is the first to enter training from Guardian Daisy's beautiful litter. She was lovingly named and sponsored by the sponsored by the Lions of Charles Sturt Woodville Hindmarsh. We thank them for their ongoing support and are excited to continue to update them through Mimi's training.

We would love to thank Mimi's puppy carers Christie and Jai for their hard work and dedication into giving Mimi the best start to her Assistance Dog Career. They have done a wonderful job in guiding her through the Puppy Program. 🐾

The theme of this year's National Diabetes Week is 'Unite in the flight for tech'. Did you know that we only deliver our dogs to type 1 diabetics with technology? Our Medical Alert Dogs work in conjunction with technology and act as the first barrier to alerting for a low or high Blood Glucose Level (BGL).

Keep an eye out for more posts this week to celebrate National Diabetes Week. For more information please visit https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/national-diabetes-week/

We are so proud to share with you our newest Puppy Preschool graduates! 🎓

These adorable pups are from Guardian Mollie's litter and have all passed our puppy preschool with flying colours. They each have attended the class with their siblings and puppy socialisers once a week for four weeks and spent that time learning some basic obedience skills as well as lots of playtime together.

Their puppy socialisers have done an outstanding job with their basic training so far and we are so excited to watch them grow as they progress through the Puppy Program.

Our sponsors can look forward to their monthly updates as they continue to grow and learn new skills in their socialisation homes.

Here's the pups with their graduation certificates and blue jackets looking as proud as ever, aren't they just the cutest?! 💙

Monday morning starts with another cute introduction this time it is Hearing Assistance Dog “Tiggy”. She is from Guardian Poppy’s litter.

She has been sponsored through the puppy program by the Lions Australia community and was named through an online competition. This name was put forward by a supporter in loving memory of their brother. We thank them our Lions community for their wonderful support!

A big thank you to Tiggy’s puppy carer Amy for her wonderful work with her as she was growing up and learning. Her guidance has been invaluable in the fantastic start to Tiggy’s Assistance Dog career.

Last week saw the placement of another one of our Medical Alert dogs, making it our 9th placement since the beginning of the program!

“Leonie” who is an Australian Labradoodle, will be working closely with her recipient to alert when their blood glucose levels are outside a specific target range.

Even on the first day of placement Leonie was going up to her recipient and touching with one paw touch which then alerts their recipient to check their levels and to action accordingly.

Leonie was sponsored in the puppy program by the Glenside Lions Club we thank them for their wonderful support. 🙌

A big thank you also to Leonie’s puppy carers Trudy, her daughter Georgia and all the family for their wonderful efforts in raising Leonie to be a well socialised pup and giving her a great start to her Assistance Dog career!
