Hot spots are red, oozing skin infections that appear rapidly, especially in humid summer weather ☀️.

Some dogs are more prone to hot spots than others. They’re often triggered by scratching, fleas, allergic skin disease or moisture trapped under coats.

Clip the fur, keep the area dry and see your vet for treatment to stop the itch-scratch cycle and prevent a deeper infection 🐕. Regular grooming and parasite prevention can help prevent flare-ups.

💚 Consult us for more advice on managing skin irritations in your pet.

Vomiting or diarrhoea in dogs can be caused by eating fatty foods, scavenging rubbish, sudden diet changes, parasites, infections, inflammatory bowel disease or blockages 🐶.

Most mild cases resolve quickly, but ongoing symptoms or lethargy may need veterinary care. Always introduce new foods slowly and seek help if you notice any unusual symptoms or your dog appears uncomfortable 💩.

Fireworks, storms and loud parties can frighten cats, leading to hiding, trembling or inappropriate toileting 🎆. Some cats react more strongly than others and develop phobias.

To help, create a quiet, cosy hiding spot and play gentle background sounds 💛. Pheromone diffusers can also calm anxiety. If your cat remains fearful or stops eating, speak with our vets for extra support 🐾.

Fleas are tiny, fast-moving insects that can cause intense itching, scabs and hair loss in cats 🐱. You might spot black ‘flea dirt’ specks on your cat’s skin, particularly around the tail base or neck.

Regular flea prevention is key, as infestations can quickly spread through your home.

If your cat is scratching or covered in black dirt, it might be fleas. Book a flea check with our vets today ✨🐾.

Does your big doggo sometimes limp and then seem fine a few days later? 🐕

Intermittent lameness in dogs can occur due to a range of musculoskeletal problems, many of which larger breeds can be more prone to.

Common causes of an “on and off” limp in larger breeds include:
✅ Hip or elbow dysplasia (malformation)
✅ Cruciate ligament disease
✅ Arthritis

If you notice any limping in your pet that lasts more than a day or so, or occurs more than once, it’s a good idea to hop on down to our clinic for a thorough joint health assessment with our orthopaedically-awesome vets!

“Why can’t I just pop in and pick up some antibiotics for my pet? I’m pretty sure they need them!”

Just like human doctors, vets have a professional responsibility to prescribe antibiotics responsibly. Not only does this help avoid unnecessary side effects in your pet (such as messing up their gut bacterial balance), but it’s also vital for slowing the development of antibiotic resistance in bacterial populations.

Unless your pet is showing clear indications of a significant bacterial infection, we will avoid prescribing antibiotics. But don’t worry, there are still lots of supportive treatments we can administer to keep them comfortable and well! 🌿

For more information on infectious illnesses in pets, consult our microbially-magnificent vets.

Is your cat a “senior kit-izen?” 🐱

From 10-12 years old, cats may begin to develop age-related brain decline; commonly referred to as “dementia”.

Symptoms of dementia in cats include:
✅ Changes in sleeping patterns (e.g. waking up at odd hours)
✅ Increased vocalisation
✅ Changes in toileting behaviours
✅ Decreased self-grooming

Of course, there are other common health issues that can cause the same symptoms in older cats, such as kidney disease, arthritis or an overactive thyroid.

If you’ve noticed any changes in your older pet’s behaviour or routines, we’d recommend consulting our senior-savvy vets.

Unfortunately, some cats just don’t take well to boarding! 😿

For more sensitive cats, an environmental change can lead to significant stress, particularly when it’s to an area filled with the sounds, sights and smells of other cats!

This stress can cause them to stop eating, drinking and/or toileting properly for several days, which can result in dehydration, urinary tract problems or constipation. It can also affect their immunity, leading to a recurrence of flu symptoms in pets prone to chronic cat flu.

If your cat is a more sensitive soul, have a chat with our vets about anti-anxiety aids and options for lower-stress holiday care.

Even though you may not realise it, you’ve likely administered NSAIDs your pet before! 💊

NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are medications that help to relieve pain, inflammation and fever. Common examples in pets include carprofen and meloxicam. These drugs may be prescribed for short periods (e.g. for pain relief after desexing) or may be used longer-term (e.g. for arthritis management).

While NSAIDs can be very useful, just like any drug they can have associated side effects. To reduce the risk of significant side effects in your pet, ensure you only administer them as per the prescribed label instructions.

🐶 For more information on safe pain relief in pets, consult our analgesia-aware team.
