Warmer conditions favour the survival and breeding of pesky parasites such as fleas, ticks and some intestinal worms. Additionally, in heartworm-endemic areas, mosquitoes capable of spreading dangerous heartworm disease between pets will also become more active.

Does your cat get runny eyes? 👀

Persians and similar breeds are more likely to get regular eye goop due to their flatter facial anatomy. However, recurrent eye discharge can also be associated with other health issues, such as environmental allergies or cat flu.

If your cat regularly gets weepy eyes but seems otherwise fine, we’d recommend twice daily cleaning around their eyes with a clean, warm, wet compress. However, if your cat’s eye discharge is associated with any redness, irritation, or other unwellness, it’s best to have them checked by one of our vets.

Do you know the signs of flea infestation in cats? 😿

Being only 2-4mm long and mobile, these parasites can be difficult to spot, especially since cats usually endeavour to groom fleas out of their fur. You’re more likely to detect their presence by parting the fur in several areas around your pet’s rump to look for tiny black “flea dirt” (flea poo) granules.

It’s also a good idea to monitor for signs of your cat grooming or scratching more, or the development of red, scabby dots or bald spots on the skin around their head, neck, rump or belly. 🐈

As we spring into Spring, watch out for more “creepy crawlies” about! 🐜🌼 As well as increased activity of common parasites like fleas and ticks, the warmer weather will likely bring your pet into contact with more ants and bees.

For most dogs, ant and bee stings result in local irritation or pain only, although this may still require veterinary treatment to settle.

However, for pets with severe allergies, an insect sting may trigger dangerous anaphylaxis. This leads to severe allergy symptoms such as weakness, vomiting, breathing difficulties, and pale gums, and necessitates urgent veterinary care.

During a dental, your dog is placed under anaesthesia for comfort and safety. A thorough dental requires cleaning under the gum line, which is practically impossible in a conscious animal. 🐕

While under anaesthesia, we remove tartar, clean below the gumline, polish teeth, take dental x-rays and check for hidden issues. We can also remove or remedy teeth if problems are detected. Your pet will be given pain relief and wake with a fresh mouth after the short procedure.
