🎆Christmas is over but 2024 isn’t quite finished. New Year’s Eve can sometimes be a stressful time for pets with parties and fireworks being very popular. There are some small things you might be able to do at home to help ease this stress for your pets! 🎇

- REDUCE SOUNDS: Close doors and windows, keep the television turned up, cover your pets ears using a scarf, snood or shirt (this seems silly but can be very comforting).

- KEEP PETS INSIDE AND SECURE: This makes it very hard to find ways to escape, furthermore it can be helpful to create a safe space inside like a crate or corner of the house with their toys and blankets for pets to retreat if stressed. If you think they might escape, consider a GPS tracker on their collar!

- WEAR THEM OUT: Treats, walks, puzzles, exploring in the lead up can be a great way to make your pets feel tired and sleepy in the evening.

Last but not least…
- MAKE SURE THEIR MICROCHIP DETAILS ARE UP TO DATE!!!! If your pet does find a way to escape, returning them home will be almost guaranteed if their microchip details are current 🐾

As 2024 reaches its close we would love to send out a heartfelt thank you for all of your support in the beginning of our journey here at Virginia.

We will be back open at 8am on the 2nd of January 2025. In the mean time, stay safe and cool, don’t feed your pets the Christmas scraps, hide the chocolates and give your pets lots of cuddles from us 🎄🐾🥰

HAVE A PAW-some Holiday!!

Those first big stretches out in the real world… Christmas came early for the lucky owner of these beeeeautiful babies born last week in the clinic.🎄

Don’t forget tomorrow is our last day open before Christmas so please make sure you get in for any last minute vet needs.

🦈 Baby Shark doo do do doo do do 🦈

This is a great example of a pup with (lots of) retained baby teeth. This is when baby teeth do not fall out on their own but adult teeth still grow next to them. Most pups will have lost their baby teeth by the time they are roughly 6 months old and if they do not we will often have to remove them under general anaesthesia. This is usually a quick procedure but it is important to do, as these extra teeth cause overcrowding which can cause severe dental disease.

We hope the gorgeous Winnie is having a speedy recovery at home and will be back to her usual puppy play in no time!

You may have already met them, you’ve probably heard them, and if you have been in the clinic early enough in the morning, you’ve definitely smelled them…

Some weeks ago a litter of kittens were handed into the clinic by members of the public. One of our amazing cat rescue partners took on the kittens but not before we decided to give ourselves an early Christmas present. Introducing our clinic cats/ therapy kittens - Margot and Merlin 🐈‍⬛

We hope everyone is staying safe this weekend as the temperature soars above 40 degrees. We’d love to have all our animals inside under the fan all day but let’s be realistic, not many of us can bring their chickens, horses or alpacas in to have a doze on the couch.

Chickens love to dig themselves a bed in the dirt, so keeping the ground cool and damp with shade and water helps them regulate their body temperature. Freezing treats in water or frozen vegetable snacks are also a great way to keep our outside animals entertained whilst helping them cool off.

There are lots of ways to help make these days more comfortable for our non house pets and we’d love to see how you are keeping them cool at home!

🐜 Ask in clinic about a new product we have in stock for treatment of fleas and ticks in dogs all year long! 🐜

This product is designed to be a single injection that will control flea and tick infestations within two days of treatment. The long lasting efficacy of this product controls newly emerged fleas before they can produce viable eggs. Did you know that heavy flea burdens can cause anaemia in dogs and this can be fatal?

Have we made you itchy yet? If you have any questions or concerns regarding your dogs tick and flea treatments, contact us in the clinic to find out more.

How amazing is this for a Christmas gift?!
They say teamwork makes the dream work and we love partnering with other veterinary clinics to make sure we can get the best outcome for our patients and their families.

The team at The Austin Vet Specialists have been an incredible group to work with and go above and beyond to help us here at Virginia.
Please join us in saying thank you for their support! 🙌

✨Please note!✨

We love seeing how clever and obedient your pets can be, but remember when you are coming into the clinic that cats need to be in a secure carrier and dogs need to remain on a leash. The vets can be a scary place and not all pets feel like being social with one another. We are also located close to many busy roads and although we do our best create a safe environment, if an animal is not restrained and becomes startled it can be very dangerous.

Please help us in creating a safe and secure space for all animals and their owners!

We would be lying if we said we weren’t a little bit in love with this absolute star from yesterday.

🌺Barbara🌺 is a Chinese crested breed and is only 5 months old. Her beautiful white locks give her a look of wisdom beyond her years.

Did you know that Chinese crested breeds also come in a longer haired version? We call this a ‘Powderpuff’. There are stories in history that tell of the breed being used to accompany sailors on merchant boats to help with pest control. These days they are known as an affectionate and loyal pet.

🚨When Santa said to put out your Christmas stockings we’re not quite sure this is what he meant… 🚨

Saber has history of eating a sneaky sock here and there, so when he presented to us over the weekend feeling not so jolly we became very suspicious. Imaging confirmed abnormal patterns in his stomach that needed further investigating. An exploratory laparotomy was performed where a large sock was removed from his intestinal tract.

Fortunately he is making good progress in his recovery and was able to go home to his family soon after with strict instructions to not leave any more socks in his reach.

It has been a great start to our journey here at Virginia Veterinary and we will be taking a short break to rest and recuperate over Christmas and ready to roll into the new year!

Please make sure you get in before this time for any medications, prescriptions, foods or toys required over the Christmas break and New Years.

We have loved meeting all of our local pets and their families and look forward to many more woofs and purrs throughout the new year. 🎆

☔️ How do we keep bandages dry when the outside is wet and rainy? ☔️

We love reusing our old IV fluid bags to protect our foot bandages and keep them from getting wet! Libber here is demonstrating this fashion trend after a toe amputation this week.

Cones of shame, plastic bags, socks and t-shirts, what’s your go to post surgery fashion trend for your pets?
