Meet Dr Lachie 👋

We would love to introduce our new Veterinarian, Dr Lachie Dawes. Lachie is originally from Millthorpe in Central West NSW and moved to Wagga Wagga to complete his Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Bachelor of Veterinary Biology at CSU. Lachie has previously worked as an Equine Nurse for Central West Equine Hospital in Orange and upon graduation of vet school worked at Bungendore Vet Surgery.
In his spare time Lachie loves to catch up with his friends and family and ride his horses. He is also a keen Eventer, so you may see him competing around our local area on his mare 'Barbie', so be sure to say hello!

Welcome to the team Lachie, we are excited to have you on board.

🫶 Farewell to Evie 🫶

It is with heavy hearts that we say farewell to our beautiful Dr Evie this week. What a ride it's been with plenty of laughs, tears, wins, struggles and everything in between! Evie has worked tirelessly and played a massive role in the REVS team (and our hearts).
We are sure going to miss the cheeky one liners' and her can-do attitude.
It's been a privilege to have Evie for the last 3+ years and we wish her all the best on her next adventure.

MEET THE TEAM

𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞: Jade
𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Veterinarian
𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 @ 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐒: Almost 10 months!
𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐭? Ever since I was little, my passion for all creatures great and small was fuelled by my mothers love for animals. I always knew I wanted to make a positive impact on animal health and welfare by being able to provide essential veterinary care.
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛? There is so much to love about this job! I really enjoy working with our incredible team, travelling around to new locations, interacting with our lovely clients and meeting their beloved horses.
𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐭, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞? I’d ride performance horses and ideally use that opportunity to travel overseas for work
𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐫-𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧? Of course! I have a moody cat called Miss Puss who rules the house and four horses that are so willing and kind.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨-𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜/𝐩𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲? Metalcore and deep house are my top genres
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬? When I’m not on a horse you’ll find me enjoying the outdoors and spending time with friends and family
𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭? The vibration frequency at which cats purr is within a range that promotes tissue regeneration and healing 🐱

𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴'𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 - Straight from the horse's mouth.

Equine Cushing’s Disease, also referred to as Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), is a common hormonal dysfunction in horses.
PPID causes the horse’s pituitary gland to produce an excess of hormones. These hormones are responsible for regulating a large variety of bodily functions. They normally exist in a fine balance, but in PPID horses, that balance is upset - which could cause your horse or pony to have a wide range of clinical signs:
🔸 Having an abnormally hairy coat that doesn’t shed or is dull or coarse
🔸 Abnormal fat deposits around the eyes, neck, hindquarters and base of the tail
🔸 Excessive drinking and urinating
🔸 Laminitis
🔸 Lethargy
🔸 Poor performance

If you think your horse or pony may suffer from PPID, give us a call to organize an assessment. Early diagnosis of PPID in horses and ponies allows more time for management strategies to be used, maintaining a positive quality of life.

FLYNN'S WALK 🐶☀️

It was fantastic to see such a great turn out of people yesterday supporting the Veterinary industry in Wagga Wagga.
Andy, Kate & Gabby joined the fun and walked (with our doggo's of course) in honor of Dr Flynn Hargreaves and to raise awareness for veterinary wellbeing.
Thank you to the organizers of this event for bringing such a great community event to our area!

- 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗦 -

Placentitis is an inflammatory condition of the placenta. It can occur when bacteria from the environment breach the protective barriers of the uterus and establish infection within the placental tissue. This results in disruption of the blood supply and can lead to the birth of premature, underdeveloped and septic foals.

While placentitis can occur in any mare, some are at greater risk of developing infection than others. High risk mares include those with previous history of:
🔻 Placentitis
🔻 Abortion
🔻 Premature delivery
🔻 Birth of a weak foal
🔻 Dystocia or foaling related trauma
Mares that have had several foals, have poor vulval conformation or are considered aged also pose a risk.

Clinical signs of placentitis can include:
🔻 Abnormal vaginal discharge (cloudy white or yellow-brown)
🔻 Premature mammary gland development (bagging up) prior to 320 days gestation
It is however, important to note that not all mares with placentitis will exhibit clinical signs and diagnosis may need to be confirmed with ultrasound examination. During the examination the veterinarian will check for any fetal or maternal abnormalities, assess fetal viability and determine if there is placental inflammation.
Prompt diagnosis of placentitis is important to increase the chance of successful outcomes for both the mare and foal.
Mares that should be routinely scanned include those that:
🔻 Are exhibiting clinical signs
🔻 Fall into the high-risk category
🔻 any mare that is 5 months gestation or beyond

Contact our team on (02) 5954 9972 to book your mare in for a placental scan today.

𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗨𝗘𝗦 - Straight from the horse's mouth

There are many signs that your horse may have a dental issue - changes in behaviour, changes in eating and drinking habits, weight loss, becoming head shy, abnormal head carriage, foul smell from mouth and nose just to name a few. However, sometimes there are no obvious signs of a problem and as such it is imperative to have your horse’s teeth thoroughly and routinely examined beginning early in life.

- Periodontal disease – 70% increase
- Tartar accumulation
- Gingivitis
- Tooth loosening

MANY of these problems often go unidentified, overlooked, or mismanaged by lay dentists, which is why it is so important to have your horse’s dental health assessed and managed by a qualified Equine Dental Veterinarian.

⏰12 days to go until we are Gastric Scoping!!!

Our most recent Scoping day revealed 𝟏𝟏 of the 𝟏𝟑 horses scoped to have grade 2 ulcers or worse! 😱

Symptoms varied with some horses displaying poor performance, failure to thrive and poor body condition. Other horses were reported to have recent behavioural changes as the main concern. Horses suffering from Gastric Ulcers may become sour/irritable and misbehave under saddle due to the discomfort ulcers can cause.

If you have concerns that your horse may be suffering from Gastric Ulcers, give us a call and let's see for ourselves.
