Heartworm positive case: We recently had a dog test positive to heartworm when presented for a routine health check at our clinic. This dog did not display any physical symptoms and was otherwise healthy. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitos and although symptoms are mild to begin with, as the disease progresses, the dog will develop a persistant cough, become reluctant to exercise due to fatigue, suffer decreased appetite and weight loss. In advanced cases, patients can develop heart failure and the appearance of a swollen belly due to excess fluid in the abdomen. Heartworm is treatable depending on how quickly the disease was detected but without treatment the dogs natural life expectancy will be reduced. The best way to give your dog the best chance to avoid heartworm is to administer heartworm medication, starting a preventative treatment at 8 weeks of age and continuing with either the monthly or annual medications. Ask us here at the clinic which treatment best suits your dog.

It is important to care for your pocket pets in the heat! Guinea pigs do not have the ability to thermoregulate, meaning they cannot sweat or pant to cool down. This leaves them highly susceptible to heat stress during these hot summer months. One way to keep them more comfortable is to bring them indoors during the day and let them spend time in the grass at night. This will give them a change of scenery and the opportunity to nibble on some green, cool grass. Guinea pigs also enjoy sitting on a frozen ice pack or next to a frozen drink bottle in their cage. Here at Kooringal, we love to see all of our furry friends and we especially love to see exotics and pocket pets!

Surgery of the week! This 11-year-old Australian Cattle Dog may have bitten off more than he could chew when he ingested this car part from his owner's workshop! Our surgeon, Sharlet, had to perform an exploratory laparotomy, which involves making a large incision in the abdomen to examine the tissue inside the dog, after noticing a strange object on diagnostic radiography. We are happy to say that this dude was excited to be going home today to continue his recovery!
