Surgery of the week! This 11-year-old Australian Cattle Dog may have bitten off more than he could chew when he ingested this car part from his owner's workshop! Our surgeon, Sharlet, had to perform an exploratory laparotomy, which involves making a large incision in the abdomen to examine the tissue inside the dog, after noticing a strange object on diagnostic radiography. We are happy to say that this dude was excited to be going home today to continue his recovery!

Has your dog had all of its vaccinations?

If your dog is going to a boarding kennel this holiday season they will require an up-to-date record of their annual C5 vaccination.

💥The famous five💥
There are five different types of disease that can be prevented by vaccination.

✔️Distemper. It is rare these days, however older practitioners used to see four to five cases a day. The virus is usually fatal. Symptoms include coughing, diarrhoea, seizures, loss of balance and blindness.
✔️Hepatitis. This is another disease that can be fatal. When it isn’t, hepatitis usually results in permanent and irreversible liver damage. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
✔️Parvovirus. Known to cause fatal diarrhoea, the types of dogs that are especially susceptible are puppies, dogs that are immunosuppressed, dogs that are exposed to a large number of other dogs and geriatric dogs. There is also a less common cardiac pathogenicity for this disease.
✔️Parainfluenza. A viral component of kennel cough, this disease is not fatal, however it can cause debilitation that leads to other fatal diseases. Even with treatment there will usually be permanent damage to the respiratory system. This is a highly contagious and extremely debilitating disease.
✔️Bordetella bronchiseptica. This is a bacterial component of kennel cough.

This little legend Lily had a little mishap when playing stick with her owners recently. Unfortunately with the excitement of the game, the stick ended up impaled in her oral cavity. Our veterinary clinician sedated her for radiographs and performed a full examination to assess the extent of her injuries. Lily was extremely lucky to go home a couple of hours later with minor oral trauma experienced, some pain relief, antibiotics and rest in order! No more stick chasing today!
