A great write up about ringworm from Yp Vets

A great write up about ringworm from Yp Vets

Facebook Article: Ringworm

Ringworm is one of the most common fungal skin infections in animals. Ringworm is not actually a worm but a fungal infection of the skin also known at Dermatophytosis.

The fungus cause the hair shafts to break off causing patches of hair loss and is commonly found on the face, ears, tail and paws. The lesion will grow in size and become irregular in shape. Common signs include: scaly, itchy skin that is often red and inflamed skin.

Ringworm is known as a zoonotic disease and is highly contagious. It can be transmitted by direct contact with an infected individual or via the environment such as contaminated bedding etc. Infectious spores can live on hairs for up to 13 months in the environment. After exposure, it takes two to four weeks before your animal shows any clinical signs, during this period your animal can be highly contagious.

Diagnosing ringworm is not always straightforward. Other skin diseases may mimic the signs of ringworm. The veterinarian will need to get a complete history from the owner, perform a physical exam, and will examine your pet’s coat with the use of a Wood’s UV lamp that causes infected hairs to fluoresce.
Once your animal has been diagnosed with ringworm you will have to treat both the pet and the environment. If you live in a multiple pet household, all pets will require treatment. In healthy pets, ringworm will often resolve itself in 2 – 4 month, however it is recommended to speed up the process and prevent further contamination.
There are three ways to treat ringworm, through topical therapy, systemic therapy and environmental cleaning. Topical antifungal shampoo therapy such as malaseb and antifungal creams such as fungafite is used in almost every case, especially in longer haired pets. Affected animals should be washed daily for 1-2 weeks. It is also common to clip some or all of the hair in some pets to make it more effective. These baths will also remove infected hairs that can be the source of an infection to people or other animals. Treatment takes anywhere up to 6-8 weeks if not longer.
The best way to protect yourself from ringworm is to use good hygiene habits. Wash your hands frequently. Clean and disinfect areas where your animal lives as well as any equipment used for the animal. Dilute chlorine bleach (1:10) may be used. If your animal becomes infected, wear gloves and protective clothing when treating them.
