Poor little Sassy the quail has developed a small case of bumblefoot over Christmas Eve 🥺🎄
We’re not quite sure how she’s picked it up, but her pen is getting a super thorough clean, and she’s getting lots of extra TLC

Sass has her own little hospital crate while she heals, and she’s on meds with daily foot soaks and fresh dressings. Fingers crossed she’s back on her feet soon 🤞
She is mentally more than ready to head back to her flock, but her foot still needs a bit more healing time.
Even when you do everything you can to prevent illness, these things can still happen. The upside is that carefully observing every animal every day means we usually catch things early, and that makes such a huge difference to recovery.

Send Sassy all your healing thoughts please 💛🐦

I would be lying if I said this past year hasn’t been extremely challenging. Honestly, the last five have been, but this year has really been a doozy. Caring for animals the way we do, while still doing all the “normal people” stuff, is playing life in hard mode, always skating close to the edge of some kind of cliff: money, time, burnout, responsibility overload, heartbreak. Sometimes I barely hang on to my sanity by a very tiny, fragile thread. But moments like this really bring it all back to the WHY!!

This past year, though, Jem and I have made so much progress towards achieving our dreams for the animals in our care. And while we still have a long way to go, I’m so proud of us for not giving up just because things got hard. We keep our minds focused on our vision and work as hard as we possibly can to do our small part in making this world a kinder, more peaceful place for the most abused and exploited beings on the planet

It’s just us here... two people with a vision of compassion and peace for everyone. Thank you to everyone who supports us, we truly wouldn’t be doing what we do without you. I’m hoping next year our little community can grow, so things don’t have to be quite so tough for Jem and I, and so we can do an even better job caring for the 70-strong rescued crew here 💕

✨ Meet Charlie ✨

This sweet little boy is Charlie, The newest SE family member 🤍
We originally agreed to take him in as a friend for Britney, but his arrival was delayed when we received an urgent call to help very sick Cher. Charlie’s wonderful previous carer lovingly kept him safe for a few extra weeks so we could focus on getting Cher well which was an enormous help!

By chance, Charlie is the same breed as Britney and Cher, an Aussie White, and together they look like the most perfect little snowy trio, as if they were always meant to find each other ❄️🤍
He settled in beautifully, and while we were a little nervous because the girls are very closely bonded, they’ve happily welcomed him as their new brother. Charlie has been confident, gentle, and eager to make friends, and it’s been lovely to watch.

Charlie came into care after finding himself alone, and we already love him dearly. We’re so excited to get to know him.

Over the past couple of months, we’ve welcomed six lambs and sheep, more than we planned for and we’re now officially beyond capacity, with our doors closed so we can care properly for those already here.

We know it’s close to Chrissy and times are tight, bit it's also the season for giving, so if you do have a little spare and feel able to help with the costs of caring for our recent arrivals, we would be so grateful. It’s just Jem and I here, and every cent goes directly to the animals’ care and we really need a few more awesome humans to sign on as reoccurring donors as well as the one off help. Sharing our posts also helps so much

All donations over $2 are tax deductible in Australia ✨🌸💞

🐓Bam Bam and his hens live in the special needs/nursery pen, he greets all new arrivals as well as making a general menace of himself each day, nobody that lives in there takes his 💩 seriously the poor guy. If you're wondering about his strange hair cut, it's because his hens eat his feathers, every year they give him a new style. Sometimes this can be due to nutritional issues but in this case, it's trauma related behaviour due to the girl's being battery cage survivors. Bam Bam let's them, he is a devoted Roo and so loved 💞

Did you know our Sheep friends appreciate a little luxury and comfort too?

Yup, here you can see Koda enjoying the sunset and evening breeze relaxing on his pal, Arnold's, wool.

From Lambs raised by us who are accustomed to chilling on couches every night when they were bubs, to our more timid friends who grew up on farms, we witness them seeking out only the comfiest of places possible to rest their hooves 🥰

When Cher first arrived, she was a tiny, exhausted soul who had been alone for several days without her mum. She was emaciated, dehydrated, fighting pneumonia, and battling a dangerous tummy bug on top of it all. She was terrified of everyone…except Britany. Somehow Brit knew exactly what Cher needed, and she instantly accepted her role as official big sister with enthusiasm. Those two became inseparable almost overnight, sisters by choice and also by birth as their father was the same athletic Ram successfully jumping fences with the pretty Ewes in his sights. Britany became Cher’s safe place while the world felt too big and too scary after the horrible trauma she had endured so at such a sweet age

Swipe to see her then and now pic, first photo in this collage is what Cher looked like the day she came in,
The second is her today 😍

3 weeks of proper nutrition, medication, rest, warmth, and all of the love have completely transformed her. She’s healthy, round and she has found her zest and confidence. She seeks out affection and loves her cheeks scratched. She melts into cuddles (seen pictured enjoying one with my Mama), and she naps without a single worry in her little world

We’re so grateful to have Cher as part of our family. Her fate could have been the same as millions of other Australian Lambs every year, but she is here, she is safe! We feel so lucky to know and love her

To the absolute wonder humans who support us, this is the impact you have, this is what you help us to do. Your kindness gives lambs like Cher safety, healing, and a whole new future. Thank you for helping us make stories like hers possible ❤️

Shearing day is done and dusted for this year, thank goodness! It's never fun for the sheep and seeing as, for better or worse, my emotions are directly connected to the happiness and wellbeing of our babies, to say I stress a tad would be a significant understatement

At the end of the day though, the sheep feel fabulous without their old wool weighing them down and making them itchy, and it makes it all worthwhile, you can just see their immediate relief. They also had their other treatments today including Vaccination, lice treatment and worming

Today was Hulk and Ralfs first shearing day and they handled it like little legends ❤️ Look at their before and after pictures, cute and still cute in my very correct opinion 💁🏼‍♀️

Paddy is relaxing and blissfully unaware that it is shearing day tomorrow 😢

It's the absolute pits, and in my opinion, indisputably the worst day of the year! Once it's all over it will be wonderful though, and the sheep will be feeling fab once they are free of the years wool growth now that the days are getting toasty

Wish us all luck 🫠❤️
