Question.

When was the last time you saw an assistance dog at a dog park?

A police dog?

A dog trainer with their own dog?

Have you ever stopped to wonder why?

NOBODY with any proper training and behaviour credentials and experience recommends using a dog park unless it is empty.

Why?

Because we see how bad they are for dogs.

We see the stress signals.

We see your recall and engagement going out the window.

We see the damage being done to your dog when you can't.

We see inexperienced owners trying to socialise their aggressive/reactive dogs in there thinking it's a solution.

We see the high disease risk because there is nobody enforcing vaccinations.

We see the fallout that often walks through our doors after an attack.

Dog parks are great in theory but practically you won't find anyone with any credibility recommending them as a great outlet for your dog.

Before you go to the dog park to exercise your dog, or have a playdate, please just let this post wander into your head. You may get lucky and get away with it for years, or you may not.

If you are going to use them despite this advice, please try to use it when it's empty

Vale Vilko, thank you for your lifes service.

Yesterday we said goodbye to Police Dog Vilko, affectionately known as Sarge.

Sarge joined Victoria Police in 2011 as a general-purpose police dog before joining the siege team in 2015. During his career he worked closely with the Special Operations Group and the Critical Incident Response Team where he attended many high-risk tasks including subduing violent, sometimes armed offenders.

Retiring in 2020, this good boy has been enjoying some well-deserved time off where he loved a belly scratch and stealing sausages off the BBQ at Christmas time.

He'll be remembered for his courage in the service of the community of Victoria, and his affectionate nature.

Thank you for your service Sarge๐Ÿ’™

Bamse the St Bernard๐Ÿถ

Bamse, meaning 'teddy bear' in Norwegian, belonged to the captain of the Norwegian fighting ship Thorod, which escaped to the UK after the occupation of Norway in 1940.

Bamse not only saved the lives of sailors, but he also broke up fights between the men and made sure they never missed a curfew by fetching them from the pub๐Ÿป

Bamse was awarded the PDSA Gold medal for gallantry and devotion to duty.๐ŸŽ–๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช
