With the recent and upcoming extreme heat here a some tips to keep your pet healthy and COOL.
π§ Provide plenty of water. Extra bowls are ideal. Ice is a nice addition and frozen treats!
π³ Keep your pet indoors with air conditioning. Otherwise, in a cool, shaded area thatβs well ventilated.
πβπ¦Ί Exercise pets only in the early morning or late evening when the temperature is cooler. Avoid hot sand, concrete and asphalt.
To avoid pad burns - one way to check if the ground is too hot is to place the back of your hand on the surface for five seconds and if itβs too hot for you, then itβs too hot for your dog!
π Never leave your pets in a vehicle, even in the shade or with the windows open. Avoid the back of a ute on a hot day as dogs can burn their feet on the tray.
It's not just dogs that are affected by the heat β cats and small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, rats and mice are highly susceptible to heatstroke. On very hot days itβs ideal to move them inside. π
