As for our terriers , Wanora Stud are reputable breeders of quality Australian Terriers. Our philosophy is to match the puppy with the family and socialise our puppies with both other animals and children from an early age. We are constantly aiming for excellence in spirit, personality and type of this lovable, lively, friendly little terrier both for the show ring, or as a companion. Due to our desire for well-mannered and friendly puppies we only breed a litter or two a year to ensure the puppies have a lively and loving upbringing whilst in our care. Wanora Stud is situated in a small town called Wanora, which is near Fernvale in South East Queensland, an hour out of Brisbane. We breed and sell only quality Quarter Horses, Australian Stock Horses and Australian National Saddle Horses. All our bloodline includes the who's who of modern and old Halter and performance horses. Almost all our broodmares are different and are triple reg. With some of them being Quarter Horses, Australian Stock Horses, Thoroughbreds, ANSA and even colour. We strive for pretty heads with easy to train minds (a Horse like a motorbike, can be put in the shed and when need can be pulled out and will start with the turn of a key , simple) Horses that don’t need to be ridden every day and can be pulled out of the paddock and taken to a show. Our Stallion Harman’s Handyman is now a closed book. His foals will be dropping from late August any year and will be available for viewing. Please feel free to email or phone us about any of our horses or just to have a chat, we love to talk horses and swap ideas. Our motto is: Go out and have fun, Go give those Professionals a run for their money.

Why Choosing a Breeder Who Shows Their Dogs Matters, Even for Pet Owners

When selecting a breeder, you might wonder why it’s recommended to choose one who shows their dogs, even if you have no intention of participating in dog shows yourself. Does this focus on show standards seem excessive or elitist? It’s not, and here’s why.

Dog shows are more than just competitions; they serve as a rigorous evaluation process where dogs are assessed against the breed standard. This standard includes several critical elements:

• Soundness: This refers to a dog’s overall physical and mental health, ensuring all organs and faculties are functioning harmoniously.
• Type: Breed type encompasses not just appearance but also character, bone structure, temperament, and movement, reflecting the essence of the breed.
• Gait: The quality of a dog’s movement is assessed to ensure ease and freedom from structural issues.
• Temperament: This measures a dog’s general attitude towards people and other animals, an essential trait for a well-rounded companion.

So why does this matter to you as a prospective pet owner? If you chose a Poodle, you likely did so because of their renowned qualities: their gentle nature, compatibility with children and other animals, and their ability to make exceptional therapy dogs. Good breeders strive to uphold these positive characteristics through their commitment to breed standards.

While not every puppy from a show-quality litter will be destined for the show ring, all will benefit from the breeder’s dedication to preserving the breed’s positive traits. Puppies that are not suited for the show ring but are well-bred still embody the breed’s essential qualities, making them excellent family pets.

Choosing a breeder who shows their dogs is not about snobbery or elitism; it’s about ensuring that you get a puppy who will grow into a well-rounded, healthy companion that exemplifies the breed you fell in love with. It’s about the breeder’s commitment to preserving the breed’s best traits and ensuring every puppy, regardless of its future in the show ring, starts life with the best possible foundation.

In essence, selecting a breeder who shows their dogs is a way to ensure that your future puppy will be a healthy, well-adjusted member of your family. It’s a reflection of love and respect for the breed, ensuring that all puppies have the opportunity to thrive and bring joy into their new homes.

When the AKC officially admitted the Australian Terrier to its registry in 1960, it was the first terrier added in 24 years. It was also the first Australian-bred dog ever to be recognized and shown in Australia, and the first breed developed in Australia to be shown and recognized by the kennel clubs of other countries. It is Australia’s national terrier, but not its only terrier as the Tenterfield Terrier was also developed there.

The Aussie was developed to be a hard bitten working dog who could survive in Australia’s harsh Outback, and deal with the rodents and slithery snakes found in there. Among the smallest of the working terriers, the Aussie was first exhibited as the “broken-coated terrier of blackish blue sheen, but later names included the Blue and Tan Terrier, the Toy, and in 1900, the “Rough-Coated Terrier, Blue and Tan.” For quite a while, it was the only terrier other than the Miniature Schnauzer that didn’t develop in the British Isles. The Cesky Terrier and American Hairless Terrier, of course, have since added more diversity in terms of origin.
