While the first two weeks involve what looks to be just a lot of sleeping for the pups, there is actually a lot more going on!

The neonatal period is the first two weeks after birth. Puppies are born with their eyes and ears closed, and with the inability to regulate simple body functions such as body temperature and elimination of urine and faeces. There is almost no difference in brain activity between the time the puppy is sleeping and the time when they're awake. We rely on our great mums to look after the pups and we also sleep next to the whelping box to ensure everyone stays safe. Pups are weighed daily and Early Neurological Stimulation starts from day 3.

Studies have shown that handling and other interaction experienced during the neonatal period can lead to a quicker maturation of the nervous system and an enhanced development of motor and problem-solving skills. Our puppies are exposed to a series of individual handling exercises each day (including ENS) until they join their new families.

During the neonatal period puppies develop an olfactory imprint of their mother and their siblings. The senses of smell and touch are better developed during this period and are the only senses usable by the pups to get information from their outside world. During the neonatal stage our puppies spend as little time away from their mother as possible. Their daily care and enrichment exercises are carried out in the whelping box. The puppies innately crawl in circles moving their head from side to side as to ensure their ability to not go too far away from their mother and to find her for food and warmth. They are constantly monitored as their young life and body is very fragile.

Even before the puppies commence to demonstrate evidence of hearing we commence sound conditioning by using a variety of recordings and also quiet time. This helps them get used to all kinds of sounds that might come up during their lives, including thunderstorms!

Other activities we carry out include:
- A nail trim weekly or when needed.
- The first deworming on Day fourteen.

After litter's the mummas are out of coat for a bit. This just means that their hair falls out, similar to how humans lose their hair postpartum and then it grows back. It is due to the change in hormones and is nothing to worry about and certainly doesn't bother the dogs.

You will also find that the girls will do it a couple months after a year cycle as their hormones also take a dive then. You will find that girls will often lose a bunch of hair after desexing as well and then it will grow back in and you may find they shed less after that.

Maple doesn't mind a little less hair one bit and it hasn't changed her little habit of pulling weird faces for the camera 😂

Three weeks old and these guys are looking especially cute 🥰 They are still quite lazy and tubby getting plenty of milk from mum.

The eyes and ears are open so we are able to start socialising them to all sorts of noises and different sights inside the house. They are happily camped out in our living room where we spend the most time. That way they get used to all the normal house things like vacuums, blenders, cooking smells, other dogs, TV noises and just about everything else you can think of.

They are taking everything in their stride and are quite the happy little litter💕

Nez went into the vets for her 3rd vaccination this week, so she is fully vaccinated and ready to be out and about. 🎉

We have been taking her out and on car trips without her being fully vaccinated but now I will have to carry her less which will be great for my back. 😂

Nez has been enjoying the car and has been crashing on the passenger floor and watching me until she goes to sleep. I just love the little smoosh face she does ❤️

Pups get used to relaxing while being held from this young age. While the TV and other household noises are going I often have one on my lap (and usually they are on their back) learning to chill out and settle. They seem to really enjoy the cuddles 💕

19/08/2024

Here's a snippet of me doing the Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). The idea is to introduce small amounts of stress into the pups life so that they learn how to calm themselves down. It also helps them become quicker at recovering psychologically.

Holding them upright and them upside down helps their body get better at changing blood pressure. Pups will yawn when stressed and so you can see the little yawn the pup gives at the end, that means that what we are doing is working.

Any pups that already have a stressor are not good candidates for ENS so we won't do it but will calmly stroke them along their spine to help them calm and settle.

There is also a step with a cold damp cloth that I forgot to film at the start but that is another sensation they get used to and learn to recover from.

You can hear the TV on in the background which introduces noises to the pups. While their ears haven't opened yet they can still feel vibrations. We will continue to play different TV shows once their ears have opened so they get used to all sorts of different noises, voices, explosions, beeping, fireworks and many others.

It is with much sadness that I inform everyone that we suffered a devastating loss Wednesday night with dear little Autumn passing away and crossing the rainbow bridge.

I apologise for the lack of updates and this post being a couple days later but I've been heartbroken from the loss of this little one and have needed a couple days to myself to process and spend time with the other pups and dogs.

I noticed Autumn had stopped gaining weight suddenly on Saturday and so started suplimenting her feeding every 2-3 hours and trying every trick in the book to help her. The vets have also been wonderful but there is only so much that can be done for such a young pup when it is a failure to thrive situation. She was still gaining small amounts of weight during the week so I was hopeful but she got weaker and weaker as the days passed.

Thank you everyone I know you all will feel our loss and sadness.

One week old today!🎉

Everyone is putting on weight well and there are a few little personality traits coming out so I have decided on names💕

In order of the photos: The blue one is Silver, the tricolour is Autumn, the third one (seal) is Bell, the fourth (seal) is Rosetta, and the fifth (seal) is Iridessa. The forth and fifth pups do look similar but do have slightly different markings 😄

Some fantastic growth for these little ones, although you can definitely see who the two "big" sisters are🤣

I started ENS with these guys on Wednesday and they are so calm and relaxed while being handled. They normally take a day or two to get used to the process but these guys are quite happy to go through the process. I'd love to share a video but I need an extra set of hands so maybe over the weekend.

ENS stands for Early Neurological Stimulation and will continue this until around day 14 (each litter is a little different development wise). The US Military developed this method which was designed to improve the performance of future military working dogs. ENS is believed to impact the neurological system by kicking it into action earlier than would be normally expected, the result being an increased capacity that later will help to make the difference in its performance. Five benefits of ENS are: improved cardiovascular performance (heart rate); stronger heart beats; stronger adrenal glands; more tolerance to stress; and greater resistance to disease.

The pups are also weighed and handled in addition to ENS and the puppy cuddles are the best! I often find the pups cuddled up to my leg while I'm sitting in the whelping box doing their weights.

I'm extremely pleased to announce the safe arrival of the "Tinkerbell" Litter! 🎉

It is an entire litter of girls this time, I couldn't believe it! At least I have plenty of girl names to pick from and will make sure each of the 5 girls has a name over the next few days.

They are gaining weight really well and their mumma has been doing a super job with them❤️

As always we are just happy with their safe arrival and knowing they will have super temperaments but it's exciting to see the different colours too. So there is one blue and white, one tricolour and three seal and white (which is a slightly lighter variation of the black).

Tongue out Tuesday 🤗 hope everyone is having a good day 😄

While we breed for calmer natures and more relaxed temperaments you can't take the work out of a Border Collie. You can see Maple still has the famous Border Collie stalk and keeps the horses in her sights. We have worked a lot on impulse control so she is happy just to watch them😄

27/07/2024

Maple has been so tolerant with her new little brother and is even happy sharing her couch snuggle time with him. 💕 It's been amazing seeing how well all the dogs have adapted to having him around 🥰

(Sorry about the poor quality video 😄)

I finally got to the long overdue car clean out. Nez was very helpful supervising the whole thing!

I just had her on a long line tied to the tow ball and she stayed mostly next to me watching. Most of the training I do is during daily tasks where I bring a dog along with me. It takes some multitasking keeping an eye on them and getting things done but I find they learn just how to hang out with you that way and then they are easy to take with you as they get older.

We had a Christmas is July party with the family this last weekend and Maple and Taffy thought they were the presents🤣💕

Nez had her second vaccination earlier in the week. She enjoyed all the attention at the vet (and the treats😆). She settled in the car fairly quickly after we made it a bit of a game to lie down and chill out. Can't wait to see this girl grow💕

The waitlist is currently open! 🎉

I am expecting a litter at the start of August (next month) and have a few spaces left on the waitlist!

I don't often have waitlist places for a litter this close to them being born but since being confirmed via ultrasound I am able to open it up again. This upcoming litter will be half siblings to our previous litter (Beans Litter) and are bound to be just as perfect.

I am expecting mostly Black and White pups but there is the potential for some colour to be in the litter. As always it's a bit of a wait and see with what colours they decide to be.

There is more information about our pups over here on the website: https://korbenpark.wixsite.com/korben-park/puppies

Happy belated 10 weeks🎉

All the pups, except Tilly (who is to leave this week) and Nez are off at their new homes and doing extremely well!

It's been great to see all the updates and there are a few photos here for everyone to see. They are loving getting out and about and I have enjoyed seeing how much they have grown and what they are up to. 🥰

I miss them all so much but I love seeing all the puppy families so happy with their new little family member and I look forward to seeing all the fun everyone will have! ❤️

Since I am keeping Nez I'll be able to keep you updated on how she goes and what we get up to. We are doing puppy school starting this week which I am looking forward to.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the future updates from this litter! 💕
