Some of the embryo transfer recipient mares have come in today for the first time this season for scanning in our amazing new facilities. A purpose built yard system and a 5 mare undercover scanning crush. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make this ready for the beginning of the season Rox Rural Contracting , Estuary Bobcats and Jeremy Caratti, we couldn’t be happier with how it all came together 🙏

Congratulations to our talented Dr Belinda and Dr Hayley for presenting their clinical case based poster at this years Australian Equine Veterinarian Bain Fallon conference this week. Dr Belinda and Dr Hayley presented a case of a colonic enterocutanious fistula that they had successfully surgically managed in a 7 month old warm blood filly(which is scientific speak for a foal that had a bellybutton hernia in which a piece of intestine had become stuck and the foal was leaking faces from its bellybutton!).

Congratulations to our repro team Dr Emma, Dr Antonia, Dr Jerome and Dr Ross for being recognized for their success in the 2023-24 season. IHB supply frozen semen to over 100 vet clinics and breeding centers across Australia, each year they recognize one or two clinics for their outstanding breeding success for the season. This past season IHB have awarded their certificate of excellence to the Murray vets team as a recognition of our frozen semen success rates. SAND COLIC: With the recent rain (and hopefully more to come) and current hay shortages in WA, your horse may be at even HIGHER RISK than usual of sand colic. Some mays to minimize the risk of sand colic at home: • Avoid feeding your horses directly on the ground. • Feed plenty of roughage (e.g. hay) or alternative fib sources (beet pulp, soy or lupin hulls). Signs may include chronic colic, weight loss, diarrhea and in some cases, severe acute colic if large amounts of sand are present. Sand accumulation can be accurately diagnosed using abdominal radiography. Not hearing sand on abdominal auscultation does not rule out the presence of sand! Methods to reduce sand burden and the likelihood of associated afterhours emergencies include the intermittent use of PSYLLIUM & EPSOM SALTS. If a significant sand burden is present, we recommend multiple consecutive drenches with psyllium and epsom salts via a stomach tube to remove the sand. Psyllium sand removal intestinal supplements are available at our clinic and can be used as a prevention method intermittently in your horse’s diet to assist in the removal of intestinal sand.
