🔊SOUND ON🔊

Sometimes we wonder out aloud, "What is it you want in a dog?"

Because whatever it is, Athena is surely it.

Smart, friendly, playful, a joy to walk, just marvellous company and even with lots of people around, she's super cool. A wonderful pet in every way.

Don't take the marketing team's word for it, listen to Lee, our Kennel's Lead and Dog Whisperer, as she spends some time with Athena.

💥 RAMBO’S READY FOR HIS NEXT BIG CHAPTER 💥
This high-energy Australian Cattle Dog is on the hunt for a home where he can be the center of attention (and all the adventures, of course!). 🐾 At 1 year and 8 months, Rambo is a social butterfly who thrives with dog friends and active families. While he’s great with older kids, smaller pets might find his energy a bit overwhelming.

If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion who can keep you on your toes, Rambo might just be your guy!

Don’t miss his feature in this week’s Riotact article to learn more.

Please vaccinate your canines.

RSPCA ACT is sad to announce that a litter of neonatal puppies who were surrendered to RSPCA ACT tested positive for canine parvovirus and had to be euthanised.

Canine parvovirus is highly contagious, durable in nature and capable of producing severe or life-threatening diseases in dogs. ‘Parvo’ as it is commonly known, remains active in most communities where there are pets.

The provision of RSPCA ACT veterinary and shelter services will continue as normal, and it is no less safe to visit than before.

All animals from RSPCA ACT would have received vaccinations prior to adoption. RSPCA ACT recommends that pet owners check on the due dates for vaccination boosters and is encouraging pet owners who have concerns, to reach out to their veterinary practitioner.

Over and above vaccinations, other tips to keep puppies safe include:

✅ Avoid exposure for your puppy. Best to avoid taking pup to the local market or to the dog park until after 6 months of age.

✅When visiting your vet or other areas where dogs frequent, carry your puppy in your arms outside and leave him on your lap while waiting in the lobby. Walking where other dogs have walked and gone to the bathroom will increase your puppy’s risk of contracting disease.

It's another scorcher today, please remember your pets on days like these.

Avoid walking your dogs in this heat, make sure all pets have plenty of cold water, shade and air flow.

Today our team has relocated our bunnies from their usual outdoor, shaded rabbit enclosure into our modified shipping containers which are air-conditioned, just to be safe and keep them comfy.

We've also given the roosters some mud pools to cool down in.

Weather forecasts suggest the temp will drop tomorrow but by Saturday it could be over 30 degrees once again. Please take precautions and don't put your animals at risk.

Let's keep our animals safe and healthy this summer.

🚨Zoomies alert!🚨

It's always a challenge for animal welfare groups to demonstrate the best side of their adoptable dogs, whilst said dog is in a relatively small kennel.

So here's what Lahni looks like when she gets out to play! So much joy!❤️

We can't accurately measure the amount of joy she can bring to your home, but our best guess is it's a lot. Like, a whole lot!

Visit Lahni Mon-Sat, 10am-3pm and you'll see.

❤️ Your weekly dosage of cute and cuddly animals all anxiously awaiting to be adopted!❤️

While we have a reasonable number of larger adult dogs, there's definitely a theme or pattern of "well behaved and fun" vibe about them, come and see!

The cats we have right now are incredibly charming too - many have spent time with foster carers and they're relaxed and enjoy human company!

Loving a pet makes your world better, drop by and meet your newest family member at our Weston shelter (12 Kirkpatrick St).

Meet the animals 10am-3pm, Mon-Sat.

🚨EMERGENCY APPEAL🚨

RSPCA ACT is currently at capacity with 53 dogs and puppies and 289 cats and kittens.

Despite our dedicated veterinary team working as hard and smart as they possibly can, our unfit facilities, our limited capacity and sick animals in care getting priority, is leading to as high as a 5 week delay in desexing procedures, which increases the length of time animals are remaining in our care.

This means for a puppy or a kitten, they could be spending a month or longer in our shelter instead of being adopted and enjoying life in a loving home, where they belong.

We desperately need your help.

Can you help us raise $15,000 to help 30 animals be desexed at local veterinary clinics in the ACT?

We simply don’t have the capacity to get through the volumes in a timely manner, and we fear that this could compromise welfare outcomes. By working together with local veterinarians, we can get more procedures done and get animals into homes quicker.

(The Veterinary community is under pressure, and we respect and understand that there will be costs that will be incurred.)

Please give if you can, and help more animals get desexed quicker and into loving homes across the ACT.

⚠️Extreme affection warning⚠️

Here's the plan for you.

1️⃣ Come to the shelter.
2️⃣ Ask to see Frank.
3️⃣ With permission, sit down in his enclosure and get completely covered in affection and joy!

This boy is a marvel, loves people, follows directions and he's clever. We know this because Frank is deaf. But he knows sign signals and learning more all the time.

He's truly a delight for our staff. We head into his enclosure, play with him and take photos then come out wondering, "How the heck is he still here and not in someone's loving home, spreading joy?"

See directions above to meet, fall in love with and adopt Frank.

**Look out for Frank's spot in the limelight with his article in Riotact this weekend.

❤️LILY NEEDS A BIT OF EXTRA HELP❤️

Lily isn't going to get adopted as is. She needs extra help, which is why she's been made one of Riotact's Pets of the Week.

The photo which shows her hiding is the best we can do. You see, Lily is used to living with her owner (for five years), getting fed well and having free rein of indoors and an outdoor enclosure. She likes people. She's not shy.

But through no fault of her own, her world has rapidly been turned upside down and in our shelter, she absolutely hates it. She's not coming out to meet you because she's basically like a teenager throwing a tantrum. "This sucks and I'm never coming out!"

We're certain there's a cat lover in Canberra who's seen this all before. Given a spacious home with a an outdoor run area, she'll be fine in a week or so.

Is that person you? More: https://buff.ly/4gULBjX

**see Lily's feature in The Riotact this Friday PM.

🎾 We're watching the Australian Open tennis and there's no way these ball retrievers are better than Indi! 🎾

Fair dinkum, we reckon the Aussie Open organisers have missed a trick. Oh well, their loss.

The good news is, Indi is available right now to move into your home with you!
