This week, we had the little man Frankie with us for a dental procedure with some extractions.
During an anesthetic, some patients can become hypothermic, prior to Frankie's procedure he was kept warm with a cozy blanket wrapped around + some warm water bottles in a nice comfy bed.
He was the best boy with us! 💚

This week we had Mr Norman with us! 💚
Norman came in this week for his platelet-rich Plasma injection (PRP). PRP is a type of regenerative medication - PRP injection is done through the collection of patients' blood which we spin down in the clinic to retrieve the platelet-rich plasma. This is then injected into certain areas (for Norman, it was his elbow joints). By doing this, PRP can provide healing properties, and pain relief, and can help with inflammation.

Ear infections! As owners, we love to hate them.
As frustrating as they can be to care for at home, it is super important to our pet’s health that they are treated adequately and in a timely fashion.
The ear canal consists of a long slender tube, which extends downwards & then inwards to the base of the skull, where the eardrum is located. The canal is lined with a delicate layer of skin that produces wax. The skin continually migrates to the outside, carrying wax and any debris with it. This is the natural cleaning mechanism of the ear.
Infections occur commonly in the ears. The ear canal becomes inflamed, thickening the delicate lining and producing more wax. The normal cleaning mechanism of the ear breaks down and wax and inflammatory exudate (ooze) accumulate in the canal, eventually filling it up. Bacteria and yeast thrive in this environment resulting in more inflammation.
At this stage the ear is usually painful and your pet will begin shaking their head & an ooze is sometimes visible at the opening of the canal (but not always) & there will be a pungent smell.
This process will continue to worsen unless treated. Infected ears do not get better by themselves!! After weeks and months, the result is a narrow canal with thickened and folded skin, a ruptured ear drum and often a middle ear infection. Surgery is usually the only solution for these ears.
If caught and treatment is begun early, your pet may be lucky enough to only require medication. It is essential to ensure you are treating your pet exactly as directed. Just one missed treatment may result in bacteria beginning to takeover.
Generally, pending the treatment your pet is prescribe, your vet will recommend a recheck in 7-14 days. It is super important that your pet attend this revisit. Although they may have stopped shaking their head, or there is less presence of wax and ooze bacteria and yeast may still be lurking.
The only way to 100% rule out if there is any remaining bacteria and yeast within the ear canal in with a cytology of the ear.
Without this follow up to rule out any presence of infection, your pet may still be in significant discomfort although their symptoms have subsided.

Maintaining dental condition and hygiene 🦷

Dental condition and hygiene are crucial to the overall health and wellbeing of pets.
By taking proactive steps at home towards maintaining your pet’s dental hygiene you can assist in delaying the onset of dental disease.

There are many products and methods on the market made for dental care. Below we have listed some methods recommended by our vets.
- Water additives
Water additives work by neutralising the pH levels inside your pet’s mouth. This creates an environment that is less favorable for the growth of bad bacteria.
- Food toppers
Food toppers such as plaque control powders work as they contain antibacterial and anti-adhesive properties. These helps prevent the build-up of plaque and freshening the breath.
- Brushing of your pets’ teeth
Just like human dental care, tooth brushing is a great method to reduce tartar build up and freshen breath. If you choose to try this method with your pet it is important to ensure you are using a tooth paste targeted for animal dental care. Toothpaste designed for humans is toxic to animals!
- Prescription dental diets such as; Hills T/D & Royal Canin Dental Care
There are many dental diets on the market however, these are our two favourites. These two brands have designed their dental diets to target the build up of tartar by ensuring the shape and size of eat kibble piece is large enough that pets have to repeatedly chew each individual kibble. This repeated motion allows time for the kibble to scrub away plaque, improve stains and tartar buildup.

Please note these methods are designed to prevent and assist in a delayed onset of dental disease.
Even with these methods in place, your pet may still require a surgical dental procedure at sometime in their life.

What is Heartworm? 🪱🫀🫁
Heartworm disease is caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitis and is spread from dog to dog by mosquitoes. Heartworm is just as serious as it sounds - worms that live in your dog’s heart and lungs. As heartworm disease progresses, pets may develop heart failure and the appearance of a swollen belly due to excess fluid in the abdomen.
Dogs with large numbers of heartworms can develop a sudden blockages of blood flow within the heart leading to a life-threatening form of cardiovascular collapse. Heartworm primarily infects dogs and cats however it also infects wild foxes, dingos, and wild dogs, and the existence of these reservoirs means eradication of the parasite is impossible. Although rare, heartworm can also infect humans, causing nodules in the lungs, which may be misdiagnosed as cancers or tuberculosis.

How to prevent Heartworm?
- There as some over the counter parasite preventions such as Nexgard Spectra, Bravecto & Advocate which are an oral prevention method.
These methods work great if the dosage schedule is adhered to with no hesitation.

- There is also a yearly injectable form of heartworm prevention available from a veterinary consultation. These injections are able to be given to pets as young as 10 weeks of age.
For puppies a 6 monthly booster is required as they are still developing. But for those mature age pets, a 1 off injection as part of their vaccination schedule will cover them for an entire year!

Is your pet up to date with the vaccinations? 💉
If not, now is the perfect time to book them in!
As winter arrives our animals may be spending more time indoors. If they are in close contact with other dogs and cats for example at a kennel/cattery, a pet sitter's home or a doggy day care or training center they may be at risk of contracting kennel cough and other respiratory diseases covered by vaccinations.

With the cooler weather well on its way, its time to give our senior pets that extra TLC they deserve ❄️❤️
Just like with us humans, dog and cats can experience some difficulties with the change in weather. Especially with their joints stiffening and mobility becoming impaired.

If you have noticed your pet beginning to slow down, or not wanting to do as much as they once did, we encourage you to book in for a Pre-Winter Health Check.
Alternatively, if your pet is already on treatment for arthritis OR has had issues with their joints and mobility previously, this is a good time to ensure they are as comfortable as they can be during this time.

To arrange a consult, please contact us on : 9716 2495

Why does my pet need a medication recheck? 💊
If your pet has been diagnosed with a chronic illness or disease, then they may have been prescribed long term medication's.
We understand that you may find it frustrating to book appointments for medication rechecks. However just like with human doctors, it is both a legal requirement and standard in veterinary medicine.
A vet must have seen and assessed your pet within a six month period to be able to dispense repeat medications.
Patients require regular rechecks to ensure the medication's they are on remain suitable. This also helps us to monitor dosage, any side effects or progression of disease or illnesses.
📞To book a recheck please contact us on; (03) 9716 2495
