There’s nothing quite like the moment your horse approaches you willingly, seeking your company not because you’re offering treats, but because they genuinely value your presence. 🐴❤️
It’s time to set aside the carrots and treat pouches. Building a bond with your horse doesn’t require bribes; it hinges on clear communication and mutual understanding.
Often, hard-to-catch horses result from lapses in communication and a lack of meaningful interaction. The good news? This is entirely fixable.
By focusing on groundwork exercises, you can establish a solid foundation of trust and respect. Practicing simple maneuvers from the ground not only enhances your horse’s responsiveness but also deepens your connection.

Ever wonder why your horse fidgets or won’t stand still during a farrier visit? 🤔 It often comes down to how we handle our horses compared to the farrier’s methods. When we pick up our 🐴 s’ hooves, we typically don’t do it the same way a farrier does. Farriers apply specific techniques lifting the legs higher and using more pressure when cutting, rasping, or driving nails. This difference in approach can make horses unsure or uncomfortable during their pedicure. Consider this: our horses get trimmed or shod only about 10 times a year. 📅 That’s less than 10 times a year of having their legs and hooves handled in a way that mimics what a farrier does. Given that consistency is key to progress, it’s crucial for us as owners to help our horses get accustomed to this handling. As equestrians, it’s our responsibility to train our horses so that they are comfortable and relaxed when it’s time for their pedicure. 🧘♀️ Start implementing the same techniques your farrier uses when picking up your horse’s hooves and legs. Make it a regular practice, so your horse doesn’t fuss when it’s time for trimming or shoeing. Plus, when you take the time to handle and trim your own horse, you’ll become a much better horseman. 🏇 You’ll build a stronger bond with your horse and gain a deeper understanding of their needs. So, let’s get to work your horse will thank you for it! 🙌❤️If you found this post valuable, be sure to like or love it! 💖 Leave me a comment with your thoughts or experiences. How can we expect our horses to know when to "Whoa," slow down, or relax? 🐴 Have you really set them up to understand what you want?
Often, the answer is “No.” Many horses don’t keep the speed we ask for because they don’t really get it.
No one has taken the time to teach them how to control themselves. It’s not that they are wild or just love to run; they think differently than we do, and understanding this is 🔑 .
Here are some simple tips to help your horse learn to maintain their gait after you’ve set it, even when standing still.
Think Like a Horse:
Help your horse understand what you mean. Pulling on both reins won't teach a horse to slow down or stop. Instead of trying to just stop their movement, focus on using their energy in a positive way. If you only try to stop them, they may become nervous.
Use Patterns:
Try circles, figure eights, and serpentines. 🔄 Don’t do mindless circles for ages; use patterns with a purpose. These help your horse relax into the speed you’ve asked for because they provide a sense of consistency.
Teach an Emergency Stop:
Use one rein for this. You can even practice on the ground. This will show your horse that if you haven’t asked for them to go forward, you can help them find a safe stop by controlling their energy. Remember, you’re in charge of moving forward, and your horse is in charge of stopping! ✋
Let your horse move forward:
in a focused pattern until they naturally want to slow down. Then, ask them to halt. 🚦 This method helps you communicate better with your horse, creating trust and understanding between you.
Building this connection is what makes riding enjoyable for both of you! ❤️

As humans, having freedom of choice and expression is something we naturally value and fight for. But what about our horses? Being able to move their jaw, yawn, adjust their tongue, and swallow freely might seem like small actions to us, but for a horse, they’re a big deal.
When horses are restricted, unable to soften, and denied the chance to show their natural behaviors, it changes everything. Why is that so important?
For a horse to let go of tension, work through stress, and release pressure, these tiny facial movements are essential. But if we restrict them with tight flash straps or nosebands, we make it almost impossible for them to do what they need.
Freedom isn’t just for us.
True understanding can’t be forced or rushed. It takes patience, comfort, and the space to think and learn. The same goes for our horses. Let’s give them the freedom they deserve.

Working with 🐴 has been an incredible journey, teaching me not just about them, but about myself as well.I've come to realize that it's more about understanding our own thoughts, emotions, and how they influence everything around us 🐴 have a unique way of helping us become more mindful and aware of our inner selves, offering us such a valuable lesson. The little girl inside me has always wanted to make herself and others proud.🥹 🫶As I continue to grow and learn more about myself, I’m uncovering my deepest desires and needs. When I think back to young Rachael, I see a girl who wanted nothing more than to be with 🐴 , to work hard, prove herself, and make her horses and parents proud. Now at 32, I still feel that drive the need to prove myself, to excel, and to compete. But the difference now is that I do it for ME. I do it for that little girl inside me. I often picture 10-year-old Rachael, wanting to hug her tight and tell her that every single day, I’m doing my best to make her proud.I wasn’t planning to share this, but today while working with a young 🐴 , it really hit me. We spent 1.5 hours together, and in that time, the progress was incredible. It made me think about my inner child and how she would be amazed that adult Rachael is now teaching other horsewomen, building solid foundations with horses, and achieving incredible things.🫶❤️💪🐴#InnerChildHealing #Horsewoman #SelfGrowth #DreamsComeTrue #HorseTraining #LivingMyPassion #EquestrianLife
It’s a common misconception that mares are naturally grumpy, but did you know both of these horses are mares?Rather than chalking up their behavior to hormones, remember that “grumpiness” might indicate underlying issues like pain, anxiety, or boredom. They can’t communicate their discomfort directly, and failing to interact with them in a way they understand can exacerbate the problem. It’s our responsibility to tune into their needs and address them effectively.
I used to think affirmations were kind of pointless...
Then I discovered how powerful they are in nurturing a healthy mindset and improving mental health. As horse lovers, we often face our biggest battles within our own minds, becoming our harshest critics. Our horses don’t understand when we’re frustrated with ourselves or mentally struggling—they just feel it as added pressure. For them, that can be unsettling.
That’s why it’s so important to take care of your mind so you can better care for your horse. Your mindset plays a huge role in how your rides and sessions turn out. Take the time to set yourself up for success not only with your life but also in business. ❤️🐴✨

This just came up in my memories 🥹❤️🐴These moments with my beautiful boy are truly special. Liberty work offers such a unique way to connect with horses. I remember a time when my horses would turn away the moment they saw me with a halter. I used to feel a sense of guilt because, deep down, I knew they weren’t really interested in what I was asking of them. But discovering the joy of a horse that’s genuinely eager to be part of the session is something else entirely. When they’re in that mindset, everything just clicks—communication becomes seamless, and there’s no need to push or force anything because they’re already on board. It’s all about finding the right way to communicate.Have you explored liberty with your horse? Want to learn ? send me a PRIVET MESSAGE to book in a lesson. 🫶❤️🐎✨
