Protein in feeds is measured as crude protein content but this isn't an indicator as to how available this protein is for a horse or how useful it is. For horses, at least, quality far exceeds quantity.

The feed for energy production is not grain, it's fats!

Carbohydrates in grains produce about 9g of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate or cellular energy) for every 100g of glucose (sugar) consumed while about 21g of ATP is produced from every 100g of fat consumed.

The two main reasons for this large difference in energy production are:

1. Fats are much more energy dense than sugars

2. The part inside the cells that converts everything we eat into ATP, the Mitochondria, overheats when burning sugars, making it less efficient and negatively affecting the health of the cells.

Another reason to be cautious when feed grain, grain-based, or grain derived feeds to your horse.
