Let’s talk Ears 🙉

The ear is an organ of hearing and an organ of balance. It consists of the outer, middle, and inner ear.

A dog's ears contain more than 18 muscles, compared to only six in human ears. These allow dogs to raise and lower their ears to convey emotions, and also swivel them to zoom in on sounds.

What you can hear from 20 feet away, your dog can hear from 80 feet away. They also hear a much wider range of frequencies, including ultrasonic frequencies that are too high to be accessed by the human ear.

But They Don't Hear as Well as Cats 😜🐈‍⬛

The story of Marcus epitomises the enormous courage, unwavering loyalty and sheer hard work of our war dogs.

Marcus (Tracker dog D6N06) was a black Labrador. In 1966, aged about 10 months, Marcus began his training with Private Denis Ferguson (Fergie) at the School of Infantry in Ingleburn, near Sydney.

In May 1967, Marcus and Fergie deployed to South Vietnam, joining the 2nd Battalion Royal Australian/New Zealand Regiment at Nui Dat.

Marcus’s job was one of the most dangerous jobs in the war and his team needed to have absolute confidence in his ability to ‘sense’ the enemy before actual contact was made. Peter Haran, a handler himself, wrote that Marcus was a ‘very fine tracker dog with a big heart and a very gentle nature — he would never give up’

Marcus worked hard. When Fergie completed his 13 months deployment, Marcus was handed to his second tracker, Private Alvin Petersen. Handing over was very stressful for the handlers and it must have been bewildering and stressful for the dogs too. Fergie was required to completely ignore Marcus so he would immediately bond with his new tracker.

Unlike his handlers, Marcus was in Vietnam for the entire duration of the war. He had 5 handlers (Denis Ferguson 1967–68), Alvin Petersen (1968–69), William Wright and Wayne Dixon (1969–70), Denis Ferguson and Shaun Dobson (1970–71).

Marcus was never repatriated to Australia. He was left in Vietnam. Fergie demanded his return to Australia but it was rejected. Abandoning Marcus haunts him to this day.

Marcus was given to Lt Col Val Brown RNZIR, Commander in Chief, New Zealand Force, in Saigon. He died of natural causes shortly before the withdrawal of troops in December 1972.

Just a little bit of house keeping, trying to keep things flowing nicely at the retreat we have recognised that it is much easier to collect payments at drop off or prior to drop off so when you pick up your pooch after their stay you’re available for all their cuddles and kisses of excitement 🤗🤩

Robyn Hood, Senior International Instructor, The Tellington Method, is coming back to Australia late October/November 2024 for both horse and dog clinics. Horse clinics will be held in Ovens, Victoria and another around Sydney. At this stage we have one dog clinic planned for Wilton, NSW and potentially one more interstate. For now, I am taking expressions of interest so I can keep people informed as we confirm detail. Please just comment below if you want more information as it comes to hand.

Do you know about grass seeds and how damaging they can be for your dog!? 🌾

With this weather the grass is growing wild and many grass seed’s around! 🌾

The seeds get stuck into the dogs coats and can work their way under the skin and cause an abscess. We’ve seen them under the arms, gums, ears, tummy, especially longer coat dogs. It’s definitely worth checking and pulling them out after a run around the grass this summer 🐾🌾
