Pets are OUT AND ABOUT this holiday season. So be sure that if you havent already to MICROCHIP your pet....very important as this increases the chances of reuniting a lost pet with their owner and saves a lot of hassle picking them up from the pound!
Contact us today if you havent microchipped your pet or registered them with the council.
Fines may apply if your pet ends up at the council for pick up.
We do not hold pets that do not have a microchip so please be aware that this is very important!

Snake bite - be prepared this summer!
Now that the weather is warming up, and a warmer than normal summer is forecast, snakes will start to wake up and you might see them out and about more. The venom in a snake is much stronger and the glands are much fuller at the beginning of summer.
Dogs will often try to chase or kill snakes resulting in snake bites usually to the dogโ€™s face and legs. Cats, being hunters chase anything that wiggles past, so are also quite susceptible to snake bites.
The sort of reaction your pet has to a snake bite is determined by a number of factors: the type of snake, the amount of venom injected and the site of the snake bite. Generally the closer the bite is to the heart the quicker the venom spreads to the rest of the body.
Signs of snake bite include:
Sudden weakness followed by collapse
Shaking or twitching of the muscles and difficulty blinking
Vomiting
Loss of bladder and bowel control
Dilated pupils
Paralysis
Blood in urine.
If you think your pet has been bitten by a snake you should keep them calm and quiet and take them straight to your vet. The chances of recovery are much greater if your pet is treated early, with some pets making a recovery within 48 hours. Pets left untreated have a much lower survival rate and many die. Do NOT wash the wound or apply a tourniquet.
If you can identify the snake, tell your vet what type of snake it is โ€” but donโ€™t try to catch or kill the snake, as you may end up getting bitten yourself! Your vet can perform a blood or urine test that can identify whether your animal has been bitten and the type of snake responsible.
Once the snake has been identified your vet can administer antivenom. Please be warned that antivenom is expensive and will result in a large veterinary bill, so it is best to try and keep your pets safe and away from snakes in the first place. Some pet insurance companies cover snake bite, so if you live in an area where snakes are common, we advise you to take out a pet insurance policy. Please call our friendly team on 4218 6804 if you suspect your pet has been bitten.

STAFF PROFILE - Meet our new vet Dr PENELOPE!

Dr. Penelope grew up local(ish) in Derrinallum, moving to sunny Townsville for uni where she graduated from James Cook University with her Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2015. Ultimately it was the dairy cows that brought her back down this way, and she has been living and working in Colac ever since as a mixed animal vet.

Penelope has recently completed her Post Graduate Certificate in small animal emergency and critical care from the University of Melbourne in 2022, and has a special interest in all things Golden Retriever, minimizing stress to patients, pain management and preventative healthcare.

Penelope lives in Colac with her boyfriend Joel, Garry (Golden Retriever) and Sadie (a Timboon special mix). In winter youโ€™ll find them at the Birregurra football and netball, and in Summer usually all things involving boats, fishing, water sports and camping โ€“ you might spot Garry surfing some waves on the coast.

Dr Penelope looks forward to meeting you and your pets :)
