You have to know when to stop 🛑

When you’re a kid & want to become good at something it’s simple, you practice. You might want to kick a soccer ball or learn to surf, so you repeat the same thing over & over again. You might miss that soccer ball 27 times but you get that one good kick & the feeling of success rushes through you with adrenaline & endorphins & what’s the very first thing you think to do? Do it again! You go to do it again & you miss it 17 more times in a row & then that good feeling disappears & is just as quickly transformed into the burn of frustration. Within minutes you’ve gone from over the moon to have gotten a good kick to a useless soccer player that is never going to get it right.

We paint a picture in our mind of what we’re looking to achieve & when we can’t do it within the time we’ve allowed for ourselves we get upset.

A lot of the time as horse riders we know what we’re looking for but the horse doesn’t. We also make the mistake of trying to bring the horse up to what we’re wanting to achieve but the horse isn’t there yet. Maybe your goal is to get 3 steps in a half pass but you only got 1. Maybe your goal is to get 3 laps of a collected trot but you only got 5 strides. Maybe you want to move up to a 80cm jump class but your horse knocks the rail at anything over 60cm.

The thing is maybe that 1 step, 5 strides or 60cm jump was absolutely everything your horse had in him mentally, physically & with the information you provided & now you’ve just crucified him for it. When that happens, watch how quickly that 1 step turns to resistance, that 5 strides turns to 2 strides & that 60cm course drops back down to 30cm.

If the horse gives you 1 step, perfect, stop.
It’s a “fail” if you see it as only 1 step when you decided you wanted 3, it’s a “win” when you see it as 1 step in a manoeuvre he didn’t even know how to do before. Aim for 2 steps next time. Not because your goal is 3 but because his capability started at 1 & 2 is his next threshold.

If those 27 attempts to kick a soccer ball only got you 1 good shot but resulted in a cheer from your parents & siblings followed by a BBQ & an ice cream, you’re going to want to kick that soccer ball again. It might take you 28 attempts next time but hey, there’s light at the end of that tunnel & before you know it you never miss a shot. If those 27 attempts & 1 good shot got you 5 running laps around the soccer field then sent to your room with everyone “booing” & no dinner, what’s the point of even trying again? You did your absolute best & it got you no where.

Moral of the story: lower your expectation to your horse’s level & work your way up from that together. Day by day you will see how willing they become 💫

So very true 💫

So very true 💫

Horses need horsemen. It's that simple. I get asked the same questions over and over again and nobody gets it. What level rider is this horse suitable for? I'll tell you, the best one she can get, the best horseman that's willing to buy her. The horse will only ever be as good as the rider. It doesn't matter if it's trained to jump hoops of fire, you're gonna bring it down to your level in no time. Your kid doesn't need a $15,000 horse if they haven't already had $15,000 worth of lessons. You can't buy a violin that will gift you the skill of playing. It's the same for horses. There is no magic horse, only a love for the animal, and a commitment to learning.

Most of you are so unfair and demanding of the horse you miss the forest for the trees. "I want a horse that rides out alone!!" well guess what, you better be ready to spend a year developing that relationship, that bond, that trust, she's not a bike, you can't buy trust.

"I want a horse that can sit and be the same after time off" well friend, this is a commitment to a relationship, not a classic car you take out of the garage twice a year. You can't buy what your looking for.

"I want a horse my kids can ride" you better be ready to teach your kids how to be horseman, because if the horse has to do it, you'll likely see the inside of an ambulance, or a morgue.

You can't buy trust, you cannot buy what comes with building a relationship with an animal over years of dedication.

A very important note to remember 💫
It’s so easy to continually push your goal flag further out infront of you & forget that you are currently in the spot you used to hope, wish & dream of. Allow yourself to be happy & proud of where you are right now 🥰

Sometimes It’s nice to just go hang with your horses. No agenda. No intent. Just watch them be. Let them come up to you or carry on. Just be there in their company. I love these 3 horses so much ❤️

Your horse is a reflection of you 💫

If you’re riding with tension, your horse is tense. If you’re hesitating, your horse is hesitant. If you’re pulling, your horse is resisting.

In saying that, you don’t know until you know & you can’t do better until you know better.

Your horse isn’t trying to be tense & hesitant & work against you, they are mirroring you.

The horse is a herd animal & you have to be the leader. If you’re not being their leader the horse will feel like they have to take the lead. This starts in little flickers of unwanted behaviour & escalates each time the core issue goes unaddressed.

Reach out if you need help 💫 we’re all in this whirl wind horse world together.

I went to the paddock of two of my regulars Mate & Leftie who I do a weekly session with BUT to work with a different horse today. After “busting” mate in the pond they were both very confused as to why I didn’t catch them & decided to lead me to the gate instead 😅

**Update - SOLD!**

**FOR SALE ON BEHALF OF OWNER**

Once in a lifetime opportunity

QH Mare | 9 years old | 14.3hh

Rumour was born into the family & has been with us her whole life. She is a great all rounder who has been ridden by a number of different age groups at all riding levels. She has been exposed to many environments including roads, beaches, trails, paddocks & rides well alone or in a group. She has been ridden in a number of disciplines & has taken part in pony club days through to team sorting. I believe she will thrive in any chosen discipline.

Rumour is unregistered & unable to be. She was an unplanned foal born in Mt Isa QLD, her father was a pedigree of Destiny Acres.

Rumour is currently kept barefoot. She is up to date on trims, worming (can be a bit tricky to worm but is easily persuaded with some apple sauce), dental & is vaccinated against tetanus & strangles. She is easy to trim, catch, practically self loads & is a very steady traveller. She has been agisted in both private & shared paddocks & goes well in both. No previous injuries or health concerns.

Rumour will come with all her gear which includes all seasonal rugs, grooming equipment, Syd Hill Western saddle, All Purpose Wintec saddle, Bates dressage saddle (including changeable gullets), all have been professionally fitted & are only a few years old.

This is an extremely sad & regretful sale.

Please message for owner details.
