Race Day Wrap Up - Saturday 26th August 2023
Emerging c**t Steel Blaze put his hand up for bigger things when the Brett Lazzarini-trained youngster harnessed his potential to win last Saturday's Well Done Matildas Midway 3YO Maiden Handicap (1400m) at Kembla Grange.
The exciting three-year-old worked home strongly to shed his maiden tag when edging out the Richard and Michael Freedman-trained Koning with stable Life Coach battling on for third.
Steel Blaze is a product of excellent breeding as a son of Real Steel out of former Kembla mare Aliyana Tilde.
Aliyana Tilde enjoyed a great career for local horseman Kerry Parker, winning a Group 3 Epona Stakes while also placing three times at Group 1 level in the Storm Queen, ATC Oaks and Sydney Cup.
Lazzarini is hoping to aim high with Steel Blaze, with the c**t likely to only get better as he gets up over more ground this preparation.
Fellow Kembla trainers Robert and Luke Price also hit the target with Headstock doing his best work late under the urging of Heavelon Dan Der Hoven to deny Ross McConville's Bully For You in the Caitlin Foord Provincial Class 1 Handicap (1200m).
The victory was Headstock's second in 13 starts with a further five placings.
David Payne's Spring Champion Stakes hopeful Agita made it back-to-back victories at Kembla.
The smart son of Adelaide stretched out strongly over the final furlong to beat the Prices' Verbek in the Delta Amidzovski Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m).
It provided jockey Keagan Latham with a winning treble after he had earlier booted home the Michael Freedman-trained Write This Way to win the Mary Fowler Maiden Plate (1200m).
Latham kicked off the card with a narrow victory aboard John Thompson's Decisive Lass in the Ian Kennedy 4YO&Up Maiden Handicap (1400m).
Peter Green, Gayna Williams as well as Ciaron Maher and David Eustace all trained winners.
