Celebrating the incredible bond between people and their guide dogs on Jan 29th - 'Seeing-Eye Guide Dog Anniversary'. 🐕🐾

These loyal companions are partners and life-changers, supporting people with different levels of vision or blindness with greater independence.

We know it can be tempting to give a service dog a cuddle, but they have a very important job to do! Here are some tips on approaching a person with a Service Dog from Guide Dogs Australia:

"Our Service Dogs, including Guide Dogs, Assistance Dogs and Facility Dogs, take on special responsibilities whenever they are matched with a person with low vision, blindness or other specialised support need.

If a Guide Dog is wearing a harness, or an Assistance Dog or Facility Dog is wearing a coat (jacket), they are working. When you see a Service Dog in a harness or coat, they should not be:

- Patted
- Fed or rewarded
- Distracted in any way.
- Any of these behaviours could cause the Service Dog to lose concentration and put them and their handler at risk."

Let's remember to respect these wonderfully smart companions in their roles today and everyday.

🐾 To relieve stress, and create comfort as kneading soft objects may remind a cat of their mother. They may also mimic familiar nursing behavior.

🐾 To squash down blankets or clothes in preparation for sleep. Wild cats have also shown this behaviour!

🐾 To claim ownership of objects by depositing their unique pheromones from their scent glands.

Our animal companions can’t always tell us that they're too hot, but we can take steps to protect and care for them during Summer. ☀️

Here are some simple ways to help:

👉 Keep your pets cool by providing plenty of water and keeping them indoors when possible.

👉 Look out for stray dogs and cats in your neighbourhood by leaving food and water to keep them nourished (and call your local vet or rescue if you see animals in need of support!).

👉 For birds and other small wildlife, place a shallow dish of water in a shady spot where they can safely drink.

👉 Plant shade-producing local species in your yard for native wildlife.

👉 If it's too hot for the palm of your hands on the pavement then it is far too hot to walk your pet! xo
