Why do cats knead? 🐈 :

🐾 To relieve stress, and create comfort as kneading soft objects may remind a cat of their mother. They may also mimic familiar nursing behavior.

🐾 To squash down blankets or clothes in preparation for sleep. Wild cats have also shown this behaviour!

🐾 To claim ownership of objects by depositing their unique pheromones from their scent glands.

How lucky do you feel when a cat chooses to have a nap nearby? A beautiflul memory xo

Our animal companions can’t always tell us that they're too hot, but we can take steps to protect and care for them during Summer. ☀️

Here are some simple ways to help:

👉 Keep your pets cool by providing plenty of water and keeping them indoors when possible.

👉 Look out for stray dogs and cats in your neighbourhood by leaving food and water to keep them nourished (and call your local vet or rescue if you see animals in need of support!).

👉 For birds and other small wildlife, place a shallow dish of water in a shady spot where they can safely drink.

👉 Plant shade-producing local species in your yard for native wildlife.

👉 If it's too hot for the palm of your hands on the pavement then it is far too hot to walk your pet! xo

If you’re celebrating with your fur family later tonight, remember the following tips to help them manage loud fireworks and party noises:

• Try to keep your dog’s routine going and walk them earlier in the day to make them feel relaxed later in the day

• Check your gates and fences for safe latching

• Treat often for good behaviour (resting, laying down, relaxing), and for coping with new guests

• Remind your guests that you have a dog that needs to stay indoors during the fireworks

• Make sure your dog is wearing a collar and is microchipped

• Close your curtains or blinds as needed if the fireworks upset your dog

• Give them their favourite long-lasting chew to help distract them during noises in a calm, safe place

• Avoid feeding them party food as it may upset their stomach

• When in doubt, check in with your regular vet professional for guidance

At this time of year, when our families are getting together, there are often new pet friends to meet. Introducing dogs to each other in a busy environment can be tricky, here are some tips to help them make this transition:

• Introduce your pets in a neutral outdoor space. Reward both pets with treats for being in each other’s presence

• Relaxed and comfortable body language is key. If your pets are stiff or staring, it is time to interrupt their engagement

• Install baby gates or other barriers in your home to give your pets their own space when they are unsupervised at first. This can help with managing age differences with young puppies who are still learning boundaries

• Exchange some of your dog’s blankets beforehand so they are less anxious with these new smells

• Monitor feeding times and treat-giving times closely, but reward them often

• Try to keep a routine to help create normality and a sense of security for them

• Bring in a professional trainer beforehand for extra support if needed, and mostly, try to be patient with them as they learn

Here's to making some beautiful memories together xo

Heading into the holidays can be such an overwhelming time following a great loss in your life. Everyone grieves a little differently, and requires different support.

Things that might help you at this difficult time of year include:

- Allowing yourself to grieve and acknowledge the pain. Don’t forget to honour your feelings and speak with close friends or professionals when you need extra support.

- Respecting your feelings and let go of rituals that you find too difficult this year, there is always next year. Focus on some quality self-care.

- Making time to remember your loved one. Light a candle, make an ornament with their name, or donate to an animal charity in their honour.

- Giving yourself permission to show up exactly as you are xo

In the heart of New York’s Central Park, there’s a hidden gem—a tree adorned with photos, collars, and tributes left by pet owners honoring their beloved friends.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see something similar here, with heartfelt mementos hanging from our local gum trees or fences? 🐾❤️

Who's picture or name would you be including? xo

🌏 On International Day of Veterinary Medicine, we'd like to extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate veterinarians who commit themselves to the well-being of animals across the world. We're fortunate to work alongside so many exceptional veterinary teams statewide, and we commend them for their remarkable daily contributions to the welfare of pets and their families.

On this special occasion, we also want to highlight the amazing work of Vets Beyond Borders. This organisation deploys skilled volunteer veterinarians and nurses to animal welfare projects globally. Their tireless efforts to care for animals in need across countries all over the world remind us of the immense impact that veterinarians can have on the health and welfare of animals.

A heartfelt thank you to all the amazing vets and veterinary teams, who, one animal at a time, make the world a better place xo 🐾
