WHOSE WALK IS IT ANYWAY?

Imagine going on a long-anticipated walk, through new scenery and exciting smells after being cooped up in the same place all day, but you have been fitted with a blind fold and are being dragged or yanked along at a fast pace.

I imagine that this is how dogs feel when we don’t allow them time to stop, sniff and explore the environment.

Dogs largely perceive their world through scent and it’s how they collect and process information to help the world make sense.

Taking away an opportunity for sniffing on a walk really isn’t being fair.. As much as physical exercise is important, the mental stimulation that sniffing provides is equally, if not more important.

Allowing dogs to choose when to stop and sniff provides so many benefits – increases self-confidence, promotes calmness, lowers stress and anxiety levels, lowers pulse rates, reduces cognitive decline in older dogs and provides important mental and environmental enrichment.

Make time for a slow sniffing walk when you can, where your dog is allowed to choose which direction to go and allowed time to just investigate, interpret, process the environment and follow wherever their nose leads them.

It may take far more time and patience as we wait for them to finish smelling that particular blade of grass, but the benefits are well worth it – after all, whose walk is it anyway?

Great advice on crate training! All my dogs are crate trained and had been a blessing in various situations as explained in this post.

Last weekend we had the pleasure of presenting the trialler of the year award to our club members.
congratulations to our recipients and a big thank you to our sponsors for the beautiful trophies and ribbons Benedict Recycling and Illawarra Dog Training Club.
We also had the unveiling of new title plaques to club trialling members and they look fantastic and are a great keepsake.
If you would like to get into dog sports let us know.
In the meantime keep training, play with her dog and most of all have fun and treasure the time.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!!!
🥳!!!Attention All Members!!!!!🥳🥳
The last training day for 2024 is this Saturday 7 December 2024.
We ask all members to arrive a little bit earlier by 2.45pm! Fun games with you and your dog! Free Sausage Sizzle! 🌭🌭🌭 There will be the presentations of awards and Perpetual Benedict Trophies for Trialer of the last few years! Of course the Raffles will be drawn! Tickets will be on sale on Saturday so come along and grab a ticket or two! 2.00 each or 3 for $5.00.
On behalf of the IDTC Committee we would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all our Instructors, Committee, Volunteers and Workers, who give up their own time to share their knowledge with our many members week in and week out! Without these people working tirelessly behind the scenes the Club would cease to function! A Big Thank you to our members that rock up each week and have some fun with their dogs and hopefully learn a thing or two! THANK YOU to our sponsors and your support is greatly appreciated!
