Did you know dental disease is the most common health problem in cats and dogs, affecting 70% of cats and 80% of dogs over three?

Dental disease is progressive, and the early stages of dental disease are reversible. We aim to intervene early to minimise and delay the progression of dental disease.

We are changing the way that we do dentistry.

What does this look like for you and your pet?

Stage One: involves dental x-rays, a scale and polish to clean the teeth and charting of any dental disease. This is similar to an initial β€œcheck up” at a human dentist. All findings will be discussed with you in a discharge appointment with one of our veterinarians.

If diseased teeth are found during stage one, your pet will be scheduled for a stage two procedure within 1-2 weeks.

Stage Two: Involves dental surgery, which includes extraction of unhealthy teeth and stitching where required.

Both stages are performed under anaesthetic and a complete pain management plan will be tailored to your pet.

Dental staging has many advantages, including:

Two shorter anaesthetics are much safer than one longer procedure
There is a clear understanding between owners and your veterinary team going into stage two
The exact number of extractions is known and options for repair of teeth have been discussed if suitable and confirmed prior to surgery commencing
The cost of each stage is far more predictable. The total cost of stage one + stage two is no different to one combined procedure

Important Update: Feline Vaccine Shortage
Due to post-COVID supply chain issues, feline vaccinations in Australia are limited until 2024.

While we are experiencing feline vaccine supply issues, we will be prioritising unvaccinated kittens and high-risk adult cats to safeguard their health. This makes the regular and semi-annual health checks even more essential to determine what approach we should be taking for your cat, as well as making sure we identify any health conditions or concerns that may be present.

Our team is here to guide you through it; please speak to us if you have any questions.

At Woodend Veterinary Centre, we embrace a fear free approach when caring for our patients. Fear free handling promotes considerate, gentle handling techniques in a calm environment. This leads to a reduction in pet anxiety, fear and stress, and an experience that is rewarding and safer for pets, owners and staff.
For some pets, pre appointment medication is required to further reduce anxiety levels. This, together with fear free handling ensures our patients have the best experience possible when visiting the clinic.

Contact us to discuss ways to tailor a fear free visit for your pet.

General tips to reduce stress prior to arrival:
- Cats love quiet and cleanliness so have cats in a secure clean carrier with a familiar blanket that smells like home. Leave the carrier out a few days before the appointment. Cover the carrier with a towel for travel and arrival and keep the carriers off the floor at the clinic
- Dogs that are anxious may benefit from waiting in the car with you when you arrive, rather than in the waiting room. Ask reception when making your booking if this would be helpful for your pet.
- Dogs that are anxious at the clinic can be trained with short frequent social visits, with lots of rewards to help them create a positive association
