Lucky cat survives after being shot

Sir Puddin Stacks the cat has used up at least one of his nine lives after after being shot and the bullet missing all of his vital organs.

Three-year-old Sir Puddin Stacks was taken to the Southern Cross Veterinarians Woodford last Monday after he had disappeared for over a week just to get a check up where the owners and Dr Roelof noticed a limp on one of the front legs. We had admitted Sir Puddin Stacks for the day to perform some x-rays to see if we can locate the source of the limp … We never expected to find a bullet on the x-rays.

On Friday Dr Roelof extracted the bullet from Sir Puddin Stacks and he is expected to make a full recovery.

❌Please be aware it's cane toad season❌

There are a few symptoms of cane toad poisoning in cats & dogs you could expect to see.

These include:
• profuse salivation, drooling and/or frothing from the mouth
• very red and slimy gums
• pawing at the mouth
• vomiting
• disorientation
• shivers and/or tremors
• muscle rigidity or spasms
• convulsions or seizures
• very rapid heart rate and/or heartbeat irregularities
• death

DO NOT FLUSH THEIR MOUTHS WITH RUNNING WATER THIS MAY FORCE WATER INTO THE LUNGS.

Cats & Dogs -First aid measures
If you think your pet is experiencing cane toad poisoning and they display any of the symptoms listed above, these are some first aid measures you can follow to help them:
• Call your Local Vet clinic or your local Vet Emergency Care and advise them of the toad poisoning incident
• Using a wet cloth, gently and thoroughly wipe the inner surfaces of the mouth, that is the gums, tongue, and roof of the mouth as well as the outer surfaces of the mouth for 10 to 15 minutes, rinsing the cloth out after each wipe

Please note that If your dog is unconscious or seizing then DO NOT attempt to wipe the mouth, seek veterinary help immediately.

How does cane toad poisoning in dogs occur?
Cane toad poisoning in dogs occurs when a dog bites or licks a toad, the toxin is released from glands behind the neck and sticks to the gums and tongue of your pet. The toxin is rapidly absorbed across the membranes of the mouth. Symptoms depend on the amount of toxin absorbed and the length of time from when the pet was exposed to the toxin. Initially, pets will drool or froth, and potentially develop muscle tremors which progress to seizures and possibly cardiac arrest.

Cane Toad Poisoning FAQs
How long does cane toad poisoning take in dogs?
In general toxic effect signs can be seen within 30-60 minutes of contact, however, the amount of time it takes for dogs to start showing symptoms can vary depending on the amount of toxin they have ingested. This time frame can span anywhere between several minutes to hours, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your dog if you suspect they may have come into contact with a cane toad and always seek veterinary assessment.

‼️TICKS ARE ACTIVE ALL YEAR ROUND‼️

Please remember Prevention is always better than a cure.

The elimination of tick paralysis is possible through preventative methods and daily searches of your pet. There are several methods to help prevent your pet from contracting a paralysis tick, which can be administered all year-round.

Tick preventatives
🐾Routinely administer tick preventatives
🐾Seek veterinary advice on which tick preventative is most appropriate for your pet
🐾Use the most effective product for your pet’s lifestyle, for example, if your pet is regularly bathed or goes swimming, avoid using a product that needs to be spread on the coat
🐾Ensure the preventative medication you are using offers protection against paralysis ticks
🐾Read the label instructions and administer accordingly i.e. the correct dose for your pet‘s weight at the appropriate dosing interval (e.g. monthly)
🐾If you are travelling to a known tick area, seek veterinary advice regarding when you need to administer the tick preventative prior to departure, and after your return
🐾Have your pet’s coat clipped short to make locating ticks easier
🐾Avoid taking your pet walking in areas with lots of wildlife
