🐴 Bandaging Tips:

Bandages can be used for a variety of reasons, including wound management, support, and prevention, when in the stable to reduce swelling, during travel to protect your horse's legs from knocks and bumps and even keep them warm and comfortable in very cold weather.

Whatever the reason, it’s important that the bandage is applied correctly to avoid further damage to your horse.
Here are some tips for correctly bandaging a horse:

1. Prepare
Ensure the horse is tied up, the legs are clean and dry, and any wounds are cleaned, rinsed, and dressed as recommended by a veterinarian.
Have a clean dry space to put your new bandage materials within arms reach or have an assistant hold them for you so they don't end up in the dirt!

2. Apply padding
Use a soft, clean layer of padding that's at least an inch thick.
Roll it around the leg, making sure it's flat and wrinkle-free. 2 layers is ideal.
The padding and bandage should start below the joint above the wound and end at or just below the joint below the wound if possible. For example: If the wound is on the cannon bone, the bandage should start just below the knee and end just below the fetlock (like in the picture below) Ensure the join or overlapping ends are not over the tendon. Edges that sit across a tendon can cause damage to the tendon.

3. Wrap
Start the bandage just below the knee, and wrap from front to back, outside to inside. Overlap each turn by about ⅓ to ½ of the bandage's width. Maintain even tension and wrap to just below the fetlock joint. Then, wrap back up the leg, ending about 2 inches below the knee.

Secure
Use the velcro strap to secure the bandage. (Vetwrap or elastoplast obviously stick to themselves) . Ensure the velcro tab is not too tight.
In the case of a wound dressing. It's a good idea to apply a layer of elastoplast to the top and bottom of the bandage to prevent slipping and to stop dirt, hay or sawdust getting down inside the bandage.

4. Check
Check the bandage twice daily to make sure it's secure and has not slipped and is not cutting off circulation. The bandage should be firm but not tight, so it can stretch but not sag or rub. Check the skin in the area below the bandage is not cold and there is no swelling. This could indicate the bandage is too tight if these things are present.

5. Remove
In the case of wound dressing. The bandage should be removed every 2-3 days or on vet's advice.

6. Call Your Vet If:

❌The wound is extra smelly.

❌Your horse seems in pain or discomfort.

❌Your horse is chewing at the bandage

❌Your horse suddenly goes lame (or more lame)

❌Your horse goes off his feed or has an elevated temperature.

If in doubt, seek professional advice or help from an experienced person or your vet.

As the 2024 eventing season is coming to a close for summer in the next few weeks I have put a few photos and videos together of our sport Eventing.
I even managed to find Floyd’s aka Kirby Park Allofasudden - dressage test and show jumping round from Burghley 2012. Where Floyd jumped 1 of only 2 clear Sj rounds that year. I know it was a long time ago but gosh I loved that ex race horse he had heart and determination.

We do it for the love of the horses and the bond we form. It’s a bond like no other that takes years to form.

Looking at some photos I love how we can also embrace our girly side and get dressed up for the vet inspections 🔥 everyone looks so good when we don’t have hay in our hair!

The sport brings us riders, our support team and owners, highs and lows … This is what brings us together like family and keeps us dedicated and working hard.

Remember your horse gives you his/her heart … ❤️ give them yours.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐩𝐚 𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦.

The equine salt spa successfully addresses virtually all lower leg injuries including tendon and ligament injuries, laminitis, splints, sore shins, open wounds, and hoof conditions.

Cold Salt hydrotherapy for horses is an effective and drug-free therapy that can be used for rehabilitation and performance as well as injury prevention. It is fantastic as a pre-competition therapy, especially if you have a long trip ahead. Your horse will feel fresh and ready to compete. The spa can also help increase mobility and reduce swelling in the limbs after competitive events and training.

The water is cooled to around 2 degrees and with the added minerals there is an anti microbial action meaning there is no risk of disease transfer between horses.

If you would like to know more about how the Equine Hydrotherapy Spa at Hallmark Farm can become a part of your horse’s training or rehabilitation program.

Hard working legs deserve a nice cool spa session to reduce inflammation, heat and swelling which in turn reduces the risk of injury during further training.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐐𝐔𝐀 𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐋: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬?

Our Equine Aqua Treadmill is an effective tool for horse training and rehabilitation.
It is proven to enhance the endurance, muscle mass, and core stability of the horse.

Due to the incline function, the treadmill can be used for uphill horse training which allows for advanced fitness to be reached.

By adjusting water depth and incline we can target the development of specific muscle groups and the buoyancy from the water reduces concussion on the lower limbs. This allows us to provide a controlled environment for the rehabilitation of spinal conditions and injuries of the extremities such as:

🐴Kissing Spine Rehabilitation

🐴Tendon and Ligament Injury Rehabilitation.

🐴Pre and Post Competition Conditioning

🐴Laminitis

🐴Back Pain

🐴Pre Breaking In Strengthening to help your horse build back muscle strength before needing to carry a rider.

🐴The treadmill is also a great tool for when you can't ride so your horse can still be kept in work.
