🐴 Thoroughbreds have a reputation for poor hoof conformation and quality. However they are one of my favourite breeds because they respond so well to the right hoof care plan 😊

🩻Before X-ray, after 3 months spelling and maintenance trimming we can see;

yellow lines - poor balance - 50/50 on centre line the goal. Low angles creating excessive leverage and load on check ligaments, dish in wall, lack of sole depth under the tip of the bone.

Red line- showing poor alignment of pastern bones, this can lead to soft tissue injury in the later weeks of the hoof care cycle and arthritis later in the horses career.

After; 50/50 balance achieved with shoe position and toe grind on ground surface of the shoe, ERS ‘protect’ aluminium plate for sole relief, soft support material to prevent heel loss throughout the hoof care cycle. Pastern alignment achieved with trim and shoe fit.

💪Multiple resets with my exclusive ERS “Omni” shoe package, 3rd fitting and looking great 👍🏻

🔎Look closer and see the permanent studs which are simply draught horse nails riveted to the shoe. With soundness returning and feeling good these add security and confidence for cross training on grass and preparation for one day events.

🧐 I have been developing this concept of leverage reduction to aid horses with distal joint wear for almost a decade with success to 5star eventing on 20yo horses. So many happy clients being able to enjoy their favourite horse for a few more years.

🐴If your horse shows lameness on one circle and not the other or sound on the straight but limps on tight turns? These could be an option. 😊

🤯Crazy that there’s not an “understanding” between disciplines around hoof dressings?
🐎So many horses are multi- discipline these days, here I am removing “hoof black” to comply with this weekend’s rules…

🧐This will be an interesting case to follow for a few cycles

🐎 ASH/QH gelding suffering from thin soles and associated lameness. The client would like soundness to return and the option to ride either in the sand arena or out in the paddock also the odd Reining competition.

⚒️ Today’s approach;

✅ protect sole from sand arena concussion with ERS “Protect” aluminium plates
✅encourage sole growth through improved circulation, orange ‘super soft’ impression material in the gap between the plate and sole allows this.
✅firmer blue impression material over the frog and bars to provide the building blocks for better balance and hoof conformation hopefully seen with increased heel height.

😊 the ultimate goal is sole depth of at least 1.7cm, maintaining bony column alignment and of course soundness.

📏 currently wall length is 76mm (too short) with the digital support from the impression material and plate we should be able to to add 10 mm and maintain hoof functionality.

😅Last horse of the day yesterday, luckily ahead of schedule so we had time to fit ERS “Omni” 4° hinds.
🕵️‍♀️Sore glutes discovered by the body worker.
📐External reference points suggest NPA (negative plantar angle) to support bodywork findings.

🎶Don’t you know; Pump it up, you got to pump it up!

⚒️ERS “Euro” bar inserts and medium shore 35 impression material.

☺️We’re expecting encouraging results with heel quality, symmetry and height. Now this Thoroughbred is out of open heel shoes and has the support of the impression material on the frog and bars.

👌Hind hooves brushing? When the hind leg/hoof leaves the ground and as it comes forward hits the upper pastern or fetlock.

🐴Strength/balance and confirmation seem to be the most common influences and young horses often “grow” out of brushing with minor farrier assistance.

🤔 This can result in localised injuries or bruising. Unaddressed this can lead to a multitude of behavioural problems that arise from the horse attempting to avoid this happening.

⚒️Here’s an effective modification using a Draft horse shoe nail as an outside stud and just $0.31 each 🤩
The stud catching the ground slightly earlier on hoof landing effectively widening the loaded phase of the stride allowing the other limb to miss as it comes through. ☺️

🩻Kissing spine or impinging dorsal spinous processes is an abnormality in the spinal processes causing them to touch or “kiss”

🐴ERS “Omni” hind shoes alleviate the symptoms and allow this 20yo thoroughbred to be exercised and train in elementary/ medium dressage

🤔horses respond differently to therapeutic farriery, in this case it was “trial and error”
⚒️3° elevation uneven, stepping short on turns
⚒️4° improved uneven on turns

🐴Revisiting our frog puncture case today.

🤔Owner feedback; Rehabilitation going well on road and firm ground but noticeable regression in the soft sand arena.

⚒️ Hoof testers could detect sensitivity mid frog/inside heel/bar region. A simple approach is the welded mid bar with air gap to protect the structures underneath and redirect load to the wall.

🤞hopefully this is all he needs to regain comfort in soft substrates and continue the rehabilitation journey. Remember that the ligaments within the hoof have a poor blood supply and can take a long time to to heal from injury with 7 months often the base line.

⚒️ my initials and my touch mark 😉👌

A blacksmith's touchmark is the final detail that pulls a project together. A touchmark identifies the artisan who created the item, allows the end user to see a glimpse of the personality of the item's creator, and is a way for a blacksmith to distinguish their work.
