Pet Paralysis Tick Alert ‼️ Biscuits had a suspected tick bite but because she was up to date with tick paralysis prevention the tick had died once it ingested her blood and left a tick crater.
Dr India then gave Biscuits a thorough head to tail check to make sure there were no more ticks and doubly ensured she had no symptoms.
This year already is shaping up to be a bad year for paralysis ticks as we and emergency vets have already seen quite a number of cases.

Brontë was obviously not comfortable at all, she had woken her owners in the night (very unusual behaviour) and was panting and pacing, obviously distressed. Owner brought her straight in in the morning. The team suspected an allergic reaction and administered steroids to control the itch and antihistamines to stop the allergic reaction. Brontë started to feel better within 20 mins of administering and you can see in this video how she calms down and is more comfortable.💛

Does your big doggo sometimes limp and then seem fine a few days later? 🐕

Intermittent lameness in dogs can occur due to a range of musculoskeletal problems, many of which larger breeds can be more prone to.

Common causes of an “on and off” limp in larger breeds include:
✅ Hip or elbow dysplasia (malformation)
✅ Cruciate ligament disease
✅ Arthritis

If you notice any limping in your pet that lasts more than a day or so, or occurs more than once, it’s a good idea to hop on down to our clinic for a thorough joint health assessment with our orthopaedically-awesome vets!

When it comes to👂ear infections and treatments we have great diagnostic equipment and tools to help assist us in remedying this issue. Our IDEXX invue machine helps to confirm infection, we find the imagery particularly useful in helping to explain the issue to our customers ✅. As we did with Hugo here we then perform a Video Otoscopy which allows us to see deep inside the ear and this is enlarged on video so we can fully see the extent of the problem and the whole team can review. Via our Otoscopic equipment we are also then able to perform a deep clean and flush of the ear which because we can go deeper is far more thorough and effective than a traditional ear clean for dogs with extensive ear infections.

“Why can’t I just pop in and pick up some antibiotics for my pet? I’m pretty sure they need them!”

Just like human doctors, vets have a professional responsibility to prescribe antibiotics responsibly. Not only does this help avoid unnecessary side effects in your pet (such as messing up their gut bacterial balance), but it’s also vital for slowing the development of antibiotic resistance in bacterial populations.

Unless your pet is showing clear indications of a significant bacterial infection, we will avoid prescribing antibiotics. But don’t worry, there are still lots of supportive treatments we can administer to keep them comfortable and well! 🌿

Vetlife…Behind the scenes. We often have really busy days, this day a few weeks ago was no exception. With 4 surgical procedures already booked we then had a couple of unplanned emergencies. A dog had eaten some fairy lights and our team had to perform a complex endoscopic retrieval to remove very fine copper wire and then we had a potential paralysis tick case. All in a mornings work! Dream team took it all in their stride 💕👏👏👏

Is your cat a “senior kit-izen?” 🐱

From 10-12 years old, cats may begin to develop age-related brain decline; commonly referred to as “dementia”.

Symptoms of dementia in cats include:
✅ Changes in sleeping patterns (e.g. waking up at odd hours)
✅ Increased vocalisation
✅ Changes in toileting behaviours
✅ Decreased self-grooming

Of course, there are other common health issues that can cause the same symptoms in older cats, such as kidney disease, arthritis or an overactive thyroid.

If you’ve noticed any changes in your older pet’s behaviour or routines, we’d recommend consulting our senior-savvy vets.

Unfortunately, some cats just don’t take well to boarding! 😿

For more sensitive cats, an environmental change can lead to significant stress, particularly when it’s to an area filled with the sounds, sights and smells of other cats!

This stress can cause them to stop eating, drinking and/or toileting properly for several days, which can result in dehydration, urinary tract problems or constipation. It can also affect their immunity, leading to a recurrence of flu symptoms in pets prone to chronic cat flu.

If your cat is a more sensitive soul, have a chat with our vets about anti-anxiety aids and options for lower-stress holiday care.
