Rossy Remembers......

This photo was taken at 1968 Royal Melbourne Show, it was published in the Age Newspaper. It explained that I had ridden an emu down from QLD just to see the show. When in fact the emu was taken out of a display in one of the pavilion's & discarded.

This was the year I was working for Lindsay Ball. I knew Alan Williams from Nebo far North QLD was yet to arrive so we put that emu in the stable he was assigned to. At the time he owned a beautiful mare, Quasarlious.

When that assignment was finished the Emu took its post out the front of our stable block as a mascot. It created quite a hype and started many conversations and comments. However Emu was taken one night however he was returned later by the Sheridan Morley! He too had a brilliant horse called Volvo.

Lindsey had his father Claude there that year lending a hand. Lindsey horses were Glenelg, Glenara, Moombi and Legioner. We kept Glanara in the racehorse stables across the road from showgrounds. Here he had stable & Walk out-yard so he could move about more. we only got him out to exercise & to attend events. This horse was hard to beat. Legioner was sold to Graham Cameron, he was jumped in the name of Stringybark. Then he went on to the Legendary Bill Billsbough. Jeff Richards from Westberry TAS was stabled next to us. He had Kevin Bacon's horses while Kevin was at Olympics in Tokyo. Graham Brown was his groom (the best) Guy Creighton was there with his trusty groom, Bob Green or otherwise known later in his police career as Groover Green the Guyra Guardian. These are just a few of my old memories from my grooming days.

I’m very sorry to hear of the passing of my old boss and very good mate Kevin Bacon. We travelled all the big shows and to alot of small ones too, friendships were made and I’m still in contact with a lot of them today. We lived together like a family, I was treated extremely well which I appreciated at the time, however upon reflection even more so today.

This photo I have attached taken at Moss Vale show, in 1969. This photo has a lot of elements to it. The truck carted all the horses about if you look close you will see Kevin shoeing Simon, Chichester tied up while I was shoeing aristocrat. This was being done for the touring New Zealand team. Ross Cole is the other person in the photo he was part of the New Zealand team. You will also notice the sign on the door of the truck. That is of Chichester and it was cleverly hand pained painted by David Campbell, who owned Toledo the horse that won the jumping in front of the Queen at Sydney show while being ridden by Kevin Bourke.

The trucks roof was put on at Neville and Helen Carpenter‘s place at Kellyville. Their daughter Kerry, was Kevin Bourke’s wife. The horses on the truck at that time with Simon, Caroona gift and Benambra Cadet.

To Kevins family we extend our deepest sympathy. Ross & Dianne Greenwood
