Wooroolin Vet Services

Wooroolin Vet Services Complete Rural Veterinary Services Wooroolin Veterinary Services opened in August 2010 by Steve Kelly. This rapidly developed into a full time business.
(17)

Steve was a University of Queensland graduate and has worked in and owned various practices including time as a "flying vet" in the Kimberleys and Northern Territory, partnership in Redland Bay Vet Surgery and owned Esk Vet Surgery outright. Steve and his wife Wendy, moved to the South Burnett in 2004 and developed a Large Animal Veterinary Service based from his farm. In 2010, a shop came availab

le on the highway at Wooroolin and it was decided to open a practice at the premises and return to some small animal work as well as continuing on with the large animal business already established. At that stage, Wendy became directly involved with the business by becoming the surgery nurse/receptionist/book keeper. Our business has been developed along the lines of the old style traditional rural veterinary practices where we have tended to keep things simple. We may not have the absolutely latest in equipment but have the infrastructure to handle 99% of cases with the option of referral to specialist practices for the remaining 1%. By doing this, we are able to keep our overheads to a reasonable level which also equates to being able to keep our fees at a reasonable level for our clients. Our small animal services include vaccinations, microchipping, x-raying, desexing, orthopaedic surgeries etc. Large animal services include ultrasound pregnancy testing and artifial insemenation in mares, semen collection and evaluation in bulls, various equine surgeries including rig castrations, herniae surgeries, check ligament desmotomy etc. An area of focus in the last 10 years has been equine dentistry with the use of a power float and mobile equine crush. An emergency after hours service is also supplied by ringing the surgery number ( 4164 2010 ).

An exciting day this week at the Clinic as we celebrated signing Bonnie up for her Cert 4 in Veterinary Nursing.
Bonnie has been working with us as a Junior Veterinary Nurse, and has quickly become an invaluable member of our team.
We are so excited to get her started in her training program, and know that she is destined for big things in the industry. Congratulations Bonnie.

It doesn’t have to be a special day to say ‘thank you’ to our tireless Veterinarians.
Dr Pauline joined our team in 2023, and has quickly become a popular consultant, and much loved member of the WVS family. With a passion for all creatures great and small, Dr Pauline is just as much at home delivering a newborn baby calf, as she is presiding over a complicated small animal surgery. While being a successful Mixed Practice Veterinarian, she would pin point her main passion as surgery, and work in the reproductive area.
Graduating from UQ over 25 years ago, she brings a wealth of knowledge and care to our clients, patients and team members. On days off, she likes to get her hands dirty, whether it’s in the paddock, or in the kitchen, on her family farm, and spend time with her husband, daughters, son-in-law and newly arrived grandson.
Thank you Dr Pauline for your experience, versatility and dedication.

Our Annual Reminder to all clients………..please check your animals microchips, and if they are not registered in your name, please update your details.

There are so many animals are coming into vets, with old/incorrect details. A lot of “breeders” don’t keep details of who they sold dogs to.

You are only a phone call away, from your lost pet, IF your details are up to date.

Especially now, in the midst of storm season - check your pets chips!

How to check your pets Microchip:
• If you know your pets Microchip Number, you can check on the following website to see which company it is registered with: http://www.petaddress.com.au
• If you don’t know your pets Microchip Number, you can call in at Wooroolin Vet and have your pet scanned ‘for free’ to check for the number! Or call us, we may have it ‘on file’.
• Once you know which company your registration is with > head to their website and fill in the ‘change of details’ form, with that company!

We also recommend that your dog has a ‘tag’ on it’s collar, with it’s ‘name’ and your ‘phone number’ recorded on it. Engraved tags are available at Mr Minit, Kingaroy Shopping Centre. If someone finds your dog, and are unable to get it to a Vet or Shelter, they would be able to call you immediately.

PARVO ALERT – ARE YOUR DOG’S YEARLY VACCINATIONS UP TO DATE?
Over the past week, we have seen a number of positive parvo cases. It is important to know that parvovirus is present within our communities and take measures to prevent an infection in your dog.
Canine parvovirus is a severe viral infection which causes depression and a sudden onset of profuse smelly bloody diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. This can lead to severe dehydration and death. Treatment is available, but as always – prevention is better than cure, and much less expensive.
Here are a few simple tips to help prevent the spread of this nasty disease:
• Vaccinating your dog is the best way to help prevent canine parvovirus infection. Check on your dogs vaccination status!
• Our advice with the vaccine we currently use, is for puppies to receive a course of 3 x vaccines finishing at 16 weeks. For older, unvaccinated dogs we recommend an initial course of 2 x vaccines four weeks apart. We recommend a booster annually thereafter.
• Until your puppy or dog is vaccinated - do not walk, put it down or take it to any park, river or public place, including footpaths. The virus survives in the ground for long periods of time.
• If your dog/puppy stops eating and develops vomiting and/or diarrhoea and becomes lethargic, seek veterinary advice immediately.
If you do need to visit the vet clinic with a possible parvo case, ring ahead to let us know and book a time. Our reception staff will advise you on what to do as it may be best to leave your dog in the car – the virus is extremely contagious to other dogs. This virus can be spread on shoes and clothing, so if you or your dog has been exposed to the virus, it is important to take extra care with cleaning and disinfecting.
It is extremely important that puppies complete their vaccination program so they are protected against this disease. They will also need regular vaccinating throughout their lives for continued protection.
Please ring us if you have any queries, would like more information on our vaccination protocol or wish to discuss or check your pet’s vaccination status.

Yes it’s SNAKE SEASON!
Over the past few weeks we have had an unusually high number of pets with snake bites.
Please make sure you take precautions and seek help immediately if your dog or cat is showing signs.
These sign or symptoms can be quite variable ranging from a complete collapse thru generalised weakness and even showing spasms. Bleeding episodes may even be seen with envenomation.
Snakes are attracted to potential food and water sources and safe, quiet places to hide.
To reduce the risk of snakes finding your backyard or property attractive, keep your grass mown, clear up any rubbish piles and clear away objects where snakes can hide. Unwanted materials, especially timber and iron, which retain the heat, will attract snakes. Make sure that stockfeed is stored securely so that snakes are not attracted by mice.
If you are walking your dog close to bushland, especially near water during the summer months, please keep your dog on a lead and avoid long grassy areas.
