Naturopathic Canine Care

Naturopathic Canine Care Hi, I am Di Wallace, a qualified Naturopath, with more than 20 years practice experience. I started my professional career as a chef in Europe.

Naturopathic Canine Care offers BIOPTRON® Light Therapy in conjunction with naturopathic treatments for:
- arthritis and joint pain related conditions,
- rehabilitation post injury,
- mood disorders including anxiety,
- skin complaints and wound healing My relationship with food and nutritional ingredients, ignited my desire to studying the healing properties of foods (nutrients), herbs and heal

ing. I pursued my curiosity through academic qualifications and set-up successful practices in Sydney and the Illawarra, helping many human and animal patients, delivering natural remedies and healing treatments. Now, another life transformation has brought me to the beautiful Central Coast, and I have now decided to focus my practice on dogs only. I am happiest when I am combining my love for animals with my passion for natural healing, delivering health and quality of life to my patients. My Method
My approach is very simple. Understand your dog’s unique problem, and design a treatment for your dog, not a generic condition. I start my treatment with a free 20-minute discovery consultation during which I gather information about your dog’s history, presenting symptoms/disease and current diet and lifestyle to establish possible deficiencies and root cause(s). Beyond that the options are:
- Acute consultation,
- Chronic consultation,
- Bespoke remedies, and
- After Care

Light therapy for health.

The BIOPTRON® Light Therapy System is a device which emits light similar to sunlight without UV radiation. The light is polarised, multicoloured and of low intensity. The different coloured light penetrates the skin at different depths and the incoherent low intensity light means is no risk of damaging tissues. One difference between the BIOPTRON® light and laser is the use of full spectrum colour (like a rainbow) compared to a lasers single colour.

The light works within a cell as well as on the cell membrane. Studies illustrate it helps facilitate the opening of the cellular membrane channels allowing improved nutrient transfer and waste elimination of the cell.

It increases Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) activation within the cell. ATP converts the food we eat into energy so, it's our body's “energy currency". Without it, we couldn't form a thought or move a muscle. ATP keeps our nerves firing and our heart beating.
It has shown to be useful in reducing inflammation and increasing healing times for acute and chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system, which makes it a popular treatment option in Europe for post exercise or rehabilitation after injury. I have seen amazing results on a broken hand where swelling was reduced and increased movement was achieved within a few treatments.

It is used in the beauty industry as an anti-aging therapy for the skin and may help skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne.

Why does my dog’s breath smell?
From time to time, it is quite normal for your dog to have bad breath. They may have eaten something unpleasant (to us) for example, but their normal pleasant breath returns.

When the breath remains constantly off-putting it is time to seek some Veterinary Advice. There are several reasons why and diagnosing the underlying health problem is important.

Bad breath possibilities:
a. Kidney Disease – Breath smelling of faeces or urine (if they have not just eaten some…) as this is a sign your dogs filtration system is not working well and there is a build up of toxins.
b. Liver Disease – Often this is accompanied by vomiting and diarrhoea.
c. Oral Health issues – This may be gingivitis, tooth decay, a build-up of plaque or tartar or other oral infections. There are different biofilms (plaque) in the mouth, just like humans, all with different scents.

Once diagnosed and the initial symptoms have been treated to identify any severe health concern it may be time to seek some supportive treatments to maintain good health.

Options for ongoing health preservation.
• Depending on the diagnosis, herbal tinctures of Chamomile, Calendula, Echinacea, Goldenseal, Myrrh, Plantain and Propolis may be appropriate. Always consult a qualified herbal practitioner prior to self-administering herbal medicine.
• Tissue salt therapy and nutritional supplements.
• Homoeopathic remedies – Arnica, Belladonna, Ferrum phos, Hepar Sulph or Mercurius remedies for periodontal health. Seek advice from a qualified health practitioner before administering homeopathy to your dog.
• Bioptron Light Therapy helps resolve inflammation, reduce pain and facilitating wound healing.

No matter what the cause of the dental complaint is, the importance of dental hygiene cannot be overlooked. A daily cleaning routine along with other supplements can be beneficial to restore health to the teeth and gums.

To assist with the healing process light therapy is very useful as is the introduction of tissue/mineral salts to support the underling gums and bone.

Mineral/tissue salts for separation anxiety

Separation anxiety can be stressful for both your dog and you.
Dogs are part of the family and enjoy spending most of their time with us. They therefore find it challenging being on their own for long periods of time.

Separation anxiety is your dog’s response to a new or uncomfortable situation. In most cases it starts around 20-45 minutes after you have left your dog. It may also be a reaction to a change in their lives for example, moving house, an addition/loss of a family member, or a change in work schedule.
Signs of separation anxiety are:
• Excessive barking
• Destructive chewing
• Repeated escaping
• Scratching at doors or windows
• Howling
• Urination and defection (even with house-trained dogs)

There are Minerals are inorganic elements that come from the soil or water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals. Tissue salts contain low dose minerals in unique combinations that help with the absorption of other nutrients.

Tissue Salts work gently on helping the physical structure of the body, build, repair, and maintain health. They are prepared in very low homoeopathic potency (6x usually) and pass rapidly into the body through the bloodstream. To speed up absorption they can be dissolved in hot, but not boiling water and sipped like a tea.
The most appropriate tissue salts for anxiety are Magnesium phosphate and Potassium phosphate.

Magnesium phosphate AKA a nerve relaxant, has an affinity for the nervous system. Traditionally prescribed for the relieving physical and mental exhaustion, nerve pains and muscular spasms. Examples of conditions where it may be indicated are stomach or abdominal flatulence and colic; muscular cramps and spasms anywhere in the body; nervous tics and twitches. Flower essences for anxiety, fear, separation and erratic behaviours.

Flower essences can be very effective for your dog’s anxiety.

I find they work particularly well on animals as there is no preconceived thought bias, so, no placebo. They are easy to use, and tasteless.

Separation anxiety
• Bach Flower Remedies – Heather. If the pet has a fear of the unknown add Aspen or lacks confidence add Elm.
• Australian Bush Flower Essences – Calm and Clear Blend or Dog Rose, Illawarra Flame Tree, Green Spider Orchid

Erratic behaviour
• Bach Flower Remedies – Scleranthus. If the pet is also impatient or hyperactive add Impatiens. If the pet is highly strung add Vervain.
• Australian Bush Flower Essences – Calm and Clear Blend, Space Clearing Blend or Jacaranda and Sundew

Territorial behaviour
• Bach Flower Remedies – Chicory. If the pet lacks confidence, use Elm. If it is due to moving house, try Walnut.
• Australian Bush Flower Essences – Try Dog rose, Flannel flower and Sturt Desert Rose.

Fear
• Bach Flower Remedies – Fear of unknow cause is Aspen. Fear of lightning or other animals is Mimulus. If the pet is extremely frightened or has terror try Rock Rose
• Australian Bush Flower Essences – Fear of going outside is Dog Rose or Emergency essence plus Dog Rose, Grey Spider Flower and Flannel Flower. Fear of interactions with others is Pink Mulla Mulla and Tall Mulla Mulla. Fear of unfamiliar is Bauhinia, Dog Rose, Freshwater Mangrove or Waratah. Emergency Essence can be used as a general remedy.

The Australian Bush Flower Essences may work immediately in many situations, but as the effects of flower essences are cumulative, for long-term issues, it could take from two to four weeks to see changes.

Don’t confuse flower essences with essential oils, which many are toxic to our canine friends. Flower Essences are safe to take either orally as drops, or topically depending on your pets’ situation. If your dog is currently under the care of your Vet and taking medication. Flower essences are safe to take alongside.

If you are considering using Australian Bush Flower Essences reach out. I make bespoke formulations depending on your dog’s unique situation.

7 Minerals, their function and why use them

Minerals help with the absorption of other nutrients. They are the major component of bone and are required for cellular communication. Tissue salts can be a good supplementary product as they contain low dose minerals in unique combinations.

Not all minerals are as bioavailable as others therefore the beneficial health outcomes may not be achieved.

1. Calcium - Necessary for proper structure and function of bones and teeth. Assists in muscle function and blood vessel contraction
2. Phosphorus - Component of bone, teeth, DNA and cell membrane structure. It acts as a key role in regulation of gene transcription, activation of enzymes, maintaining normal pH in extracellular fluid, and intracellular energy storage. 85% is in bones and teeth, and the other 15% is distributed throughout the blood and soft tissues
3. Magnesium - Assists with over 300 enzyme reactions. It is important for regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure and making protein, bone, and DNA
4. Sodium - Electrolyte that aids fluid balance and maintenance of blood pressure. Is useful for our cells to uptake nutrients and water, helps muscles to contract and supports nerve conductivity.
5. Chloride - Often found in combination with sodium. Helps regulate fluid balance, maintain proper pH levels, stimulate stomach acids for digestion, accelerates the action of nerve and muscle cells, and assists the flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide within cells.
6. Potassium - Electrolyte that maintains fluid status in cells and helps with nerve transmission and muscle function. Potassium and Sodium have a unique relationship in maintaining blood pressure. Low intake may increase blood sugar levels and over time lead to an increased risk in insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
7. Sulfur (Sulphur) - After calcium and phosphorus, Sulfur is the most abundant mineral element found in our body. It helps maintain skin elasticity and part of the structure of keratin and collagen. It is used to produce other important molecules, such as biotin, coenzyme A, lipoic acid and glutathione and participates in cellular respiration.

Minerals have such a vital role in our overall health, though they are less often discussed or prescribed by health practitioners.

08/09/2024

Fats, protein and carbohydrates are considered macronutrients, and the body requires large amounts for energy production and perform bodily functions. Water can also be considered a macronutrient.
Micronutrients are mostly minerals and vitamins and are required in much smaller quantities. None-the-less they too have a major role in maintaining optimal health, especially immune function, brain, nerve and bone development as well as repair. They are created by heat, acid or air braking down plants and animals into vitamins and minerals. Our dog’s, like us require adequate amounts of a mixture of micro and macronutrients.

Proteins
Proteins are the building blocks for muscles, tissues, horn, and hair. Protein for most domestic pet and farm animals is mostly sourced from other animal meat. Dogs can convert vegetarian sources (grains and legumes) into proteins, whilst cats cannot.
• Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are broken down to simple sugars within the body and utilised as an energy source. Useful sources include oatmeal, rolled barley, fresh wheat germ or cooked brown rice.
• Fats and lipids
Fats (lipids and oils) have the most concentration on energy when compared to carbohydrates and proteins. Fats surround all cells in the body and essential for cellular transportation of nutrients. Fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K can only be obtained by eating fat or via fatty supplements. Fats are an integral part of bone metabolism and vitamin D for a healthy immune system.
Examples of micronutrients
• Minerals
Minerals are inorganic elements that come from the soil or water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals. Minerals help with the absorption of other nutrients. They are the major component of bone and are required for cellular communication. Calcium is necessary for proper structure and function of bones and teeth. It assists in muscle function and blood vessel contraction. Phosphorus is a component of bone and cell membrane structure. Magnesium is required in over 300 enzyme reactions.
• Vitamins
Vitamins are organic substances, meaning they are made by plants or animals. Mineral balance supports vitamin utilisation. If the mineral intake is adequate, supplementation is not always necessary. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that vitamins may be useful in animals that are unwell to support poor nutritional intake, boost the immune system or act as an anti-inflammatory in the short term.

9 common dog allergens and how to spot them.

There are many different reasons why your dog may have an allergy. Symptoms may include irritable skin, rashes or hives, itching, hair loss, puffy red eyes, or sneezing are just a few.

Ultimately, identifying the allergen and removing it from the dog’s environment is goal number one.

During this time supportive tissue/mineral salts and homoeopathy can be great additions.

8 Quick wins to help your dog lose weight

Have you recently had your dog clipped for the warmer weather and noticed they may have put on some weight over the winter?
Now is a great time to implement a few changes to improve your pooch’s waistline.
Start with the changes that are easily added into your lifestyle and budget as they will be quick wins.
1. Reduce the number of snacks the dog is eating.
2. Replace food rewards with positive reinforcement with hugs and cuddles.
3. Replace high carbohydrate treats with freeze dried animal meat treats, vegetables and fruits.
4. Increase vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fruits.
5. Portion control is a way of reducing calories and therefore weight. I’m sure you are familiar with the ‘shake’ diets which are based on calorie reduction. Go slow and reduce a little every other day. If you have increased exercise, you dog will be hungry, so reducing calories may need to wait.
If the dog becomes lethargic or does not want to exercise, this could be a sign the dog is not eating enough. Ensure there is plenty of fresh water.
6. Measure all food and write a daily food diary for the dog. Only one person should have the task of feeding the dog.
7. Assess your dog’s current diet? Reading the food label is the first step in understanding what your dog is eating. Slowly introduce a more non-processed diet. Just like people, we encourage variety and fresh is better, where possible. The topic of eating bones is constantly debated, and I leave that choice up to the pet-parent. NO cooked bones is a must and I would highly suggest having a conversation with your Vet if you want more information.
8. Encourage slower eating and mental stimulation by replacing an existing pet bowl with a slow feeder bowl/Licky mat.
If your dog has a diagnosed medical condition, please consult your Vet before you commence and new eating plan for your dog. Dogs with arthritis may require some additional anti-inflammatory support and puppy’s bones, muscles and nervous system require specific minerals for growth.

Call me, Di Wallace 0480 609 955 to discuss how to apply an eating plan for your dog.

Curious what tissue/mineral salts are and how do they work?

Minerals/tissue salts are the structural and biochemical foundation upon which everything else in the body is created. They are often overlooked in nutritional supplementation, yet they are essential for thousands of biochemical processes within the body.

• Mineral imbalances impact
• water/fluid balance,
• bone and tooth formation,
• protein metabolism,
• energy production,
• nerve conduction and muscle contraction and
• cell membrane function.

Minerals/tissue salts strengthen overall constitutional health by supporting tissues and organs. When the tissue salts are in balance, they help the body utilise other nutrients therefore maintaining ongoing health. They can be a stand-alone modality or a base to build additional remedies.

When used in conjunction with Light Therapy, the cells of the body receive the medication faster and results are accelerated.

Have you seen this car magnet and wondered what my business does?

My approach is very simple. I aim to understand your dog’s unique problem, and design a treatment plan for your dog, not a generic condition.

Based on my 20 + years’ experience I have developed an approach that combines a range of modalities focusing on restoring cellular tissue imbalances and prescribing natural medications and Light Therapy to address acute symptoms and chronic conditions.

Starting with acute symptomatic relief to stimulate cellular activity that improves immediate quality of life. At the same time nourish the cells with the appropriate food/nutrients they require to affect change.

Using Mineral/Tissue salts, homoeopathy or flower essences is aimed at calming. Dogs tell you how they are feeling through behaviour, or more importantly changes in normal behaviour. Being aware of changes is an important part of the process when addressing immediate emotional imbalances.

In the longer-term, restoring and maintaining the body physiology is essential for wellness. Dietary changes along with herbal or nutritional medicine support this part of the healing process.
