๐ Grass Seeds ๐
Grass seeds are a common cause of admissions to hospital in Springtime. ๐พ They fall off long grass and embed themselves in a dogโs paws, ears, armpits, tail or skin, sometimes causing painful wounds and infections. It's important to remove them as quickly as possible as they can embed themselves under the skin and migrate through your pet's body. ๐ค
Signs that your dog may have picked up a grass seed include:
๐น head shaking
๐น paw licking
๐น swelling
๐น redness
๐น oozing or
๐น sneezing if the grass seed has lodged in the nose.
If the grass seed is close to the surface of the skin our vets may be able to remove it with a special pair of tweezers, however if it has become embedded deeply beneath the skin or lodged in eyes, ears or mouth, surgical removal may be required.
The best thing to do is keep your dog away from long grass in the warmer months and check their fur and paws thoroughly after a walk. You should also ensure that your dog is kept well groomed, particularly around the ears and feet. ๐พ
