When your 5 year olds dinosaur is sent to work with you and she needs photographic evidence.
Beautiful chicory almost ready. Grown in compost-rich soil, these will be one of our optional extras available for subscribers each week free of charge. Another great reason to start a regular weekly or fortnightly delivery. This week’s free optional extras are mint, parsley, lemongrass, dill, thyme, sorrel, wonky carrots and extra pumpkin.
Our resident ibis cleaning up the Spring snails on the farm. It’s nice to see one of these guys eating what it should rather than out of a bin.

A pop of colour in your box this week. Gorgeous Chinese cabbage leaves to brighten up your bowl.
Desert and a doggy. When your pumpkin is so sweet you eat it for desert.
I’m so excited for curly kale. I’ve missed this delicious treat! In a salad with dried cranberries and walnuts is first on my list.
I did figure out that it’s a Beauregarde snow pea. Yummo!

A rare moment amongst farming and parenting for me to enjoy our beautiful local bush. Hopefully with many more to come.
Temporary seedling tunnel update. Bigger and better after we outgrew the first one almost immediately.
This is our soil 6 months after applying a thick layer of compost, planting corn, harvesting then flail mowing it down, tarping, a flood and 7 weeks later raking off the debris. The worm activity is extreme and the texture is beautiful. I can’t say I’m complaining, and neither will the next crop.
Seed-saving with kids is a whole new ballgame.
Lettuce harvesting like a pro! When you have 12kg of salad mix to harvest before the day heats up you need to be quick. Luckily I’ve got the moves after nearly 8 years of farming. I’m also tidying the plants as I go, cutting off all the old leaves to make harvesting easier at the second cut and keep dead bits out of the mix.
We are seeding like mad at this time of the year, starting off our Summer crops, year round staples like lettuce and beetroot, and even long term crops like leeks and celeriac that we won’t harvest until Autumn but which take many months to grow from seed. I forgot to mention the trays of eggplants, capsicums, basil, okra and chillies that are also here.
My kids eat veggies because I eat veggies, and because we cook them in ways they choose and tell us they like to eat them. Raw peas rather than cooked amongst our weekend take-away treat, kale chips (yes with salt) and broccoli parmesan fritters fried in lots of olive oil. We have cut up veggie sticks in a container front and centre in the fridge for the teenager and we give the two year old different veg all the time, repeating some many times before she will eat them happily. We don’t pressure or force, we just show our own enjoyment and serve veg in a way that makes them delicious. One of her favorites is big chunks of eggplant in veggie soup. She always wants lettuce with her dinner because we eat it (and because my partner makes a mean salad dressing). Veg shouldn’t be boring and you shouldn’t eat it to feel better about your after dinner treat. It should be exciting and delicious and front and centre. If you’re getting our veg boxes, it will be 😊
