Mum says the holidays are over and it's time for me to go back to school because I'm getting 'chonky'. How rude!!
Just an aging horse woman with a love of brumbies. I saw my first wild brumby at Long Plain in KNP. Decided then, that one day I'd love to rehome a couple.
Malka is my first.

Very windy today so we kept our lesson nice and simple. Malka's flight response kicks in big time with the wind.
Very pleased to see him resting his back foot and doing lots of licking and chewing whilst we go through our routine. Baby steps and no expectations. Im learning as much as he is 🥰

This is a long video and shows his first introduction to a fly mask. I fully expected a rush backwards when I pulled the velcro 😅.
We did the same routine one more time and he allowed me to put it on.

Last Sunday we decided, time to bite the bullet and get serious about handling this boy. He's had 12 months to grow and is a cheeky, flighty, spooky 3yo now.
This morning we worked on approach, halter, leading, yielding front legs, yielding back legs, touching all over with flag and putting all sorts of stuff on his back. Then i sit on a milk crate and we hang out. I think I wore him out lol

Sorry I haven't posted recently. Life, you know?
Malka is adorable. He has lost his front baby caps and he is super proud of his new grown up teeth. See photo 1 😆
He happily gets involved in all activities here. Checking out the saddle for future use, the float for future trips home to KNP and mums wagon of chewy brushes etc.
He loves his head scratches and in particular, eye rubs.
He also steals my hat every chance he gets, cheeky thing 🥰

Malka's human mumma is so very proud of him.
It's a super windy day here and every snort from my domestic horses gave Malka a full body flinch. Those feet though, did not move.
I introduced a saddle pad. We did a very slow intro. We sniffed it. No problems. So I dropped it on the ground, threw it around. Shook it. He had many more good sniffs. He tasted it. Chewed it. Pawed it. Checked out the small 4 legged one sitting on it.
I then rubbed it on his face, shoulders and eventually left it on his back.
This whole process was slow and only what he allowed. He was at liberty the whole time.
He also allowed touching of front legs to the coronet band. Big progress today 🥰

Where has all the time gone?
Apart from daily welfare checks, I havent touched Malka for weeks. As he has gained health and condition he has become more sensitive, flighty and spooky. More what I expected from a wild horse. He is also, barely 2yo so still a young unpredictable wild horse.
We had a short session in the round yard to reconnect. Yes spooky. Yes a tad flighty. Has he forgotten anything? Absolutely not 😃
After I let him out he chooses to hang with me while I post this.
Brumbies certainly are unique 🥰

First lesson with this boy in forever. A bit spooky but he hasn't forgotten a thing. Catch in the paddock with no treats, leading, a bit of a brush on the itchy bits, then walking off in both directions on the lunge. Stop, turn in to centre. Wait. Im starting to handle front legs too. We did about 10 mins then we hang out together. Me on the milkcrate with him just being close.
So proud of him 🥰

I came out to see Malka and we had a lovely 15mins of scratching the itchy bits.
I've done nothing with him for ages and then he indicates he's had enough, takes two steps away from me and lays down. OMG I am so blessed by his trust 🥰

Our boy looking fabulous 🤩
He is carrying a perfect amount of weight now. His legs have straightened and he regularly hoons around the paddock with his domestic 'brothers'.
So wonderful to have him healthy and energetic.

I called to Malka and he came up to say hello. Considering he has a lush 40 acres to roam, I felt very privileged that he chose to come up and interact. I tried his new headstall on for size and we spent some time scratching out his winter coat. Tomorrow we might try the scary brush on him. 😊
I was out this morning putting up some electric fence to keep the horses away from the boggy areas. Little man came to supervise proceedings 🥰 No sign of my other two domestic boys. This little horse just loves to be involved ❤️
It's been a busy couple of days for me at work so wasn't planning any horse work today. After work this morning I came home and took Tempi (the over active Jack Russell) for a run. Then we sat for a minute in Malka's round yard only to have him meander in for some company. We did a little liberty lesson and he did so well, I thought I'd add his halter and a lunge rein. What a clever boy 😃. We walked a couple of circuits in each direction responding nicely to voice cues. Halting on command. He is still very wary so I am slow, quiet and consistent with him. My aim is simply - 'no bad experiences'.
For the first few weeks I was focussed on Malka allowing me to approach and touch him with no restraint and no bribes. He is very wary of people. He now knows me and follows me around and initiates contact. I have begun introducing Malka to voice commands. He is learning walk on and move away from me gently and whoa, turn to face me and touch. We do this at liberty. Our lessons are 10, maybe 15 minutes followed by lots of scratches and touch on neck, shoulders, front legs, loin, rump.
