We would like to give a very warm welcome to our new Vet, Dr. Anna Cooper! We are very excited to have you on our team, Anna! 🎉🎉
Anna grew up close to the Yass Valley commuting between Canberra and the family farm at Goulburn, farm life gave Anna a keen interest in working with animals and medicine and as a child she would bring home wounded or stay animals much to her parent’s dismay.
Anna is looking forward to working in our mixed practice and meeting the pets and livestock of the Yass Valley. Anna herself has 3 dogs, 1 cat, 2 donkeys, cows, sheep, and a couple of peacock. 🐶🐱🐴🐑🐄🦚
We know you will give Anna a warm welcome when you meet her in the clinic or out and about.🫶
Best wishes to vet nurse Jess, who has sadly moved home to Qld, soon to be off on an adventure to Canada 🇨🇦. Thank you for all your knowledge and care, Jess! We will miss you dearly! 🌼

Great news, we will be reopening our Yass Valley Veterinary Hospital from Wednesday the 17th of April.
❕❕PLEASE NOTE: The renovations are still in progress and will continue when we reopen, so as such, Yass Valley Veterinary will be operating at a limited capacity. This means that we will still be directing surgeries, emergency, and large animal consultations to our Murrumbateman Veterinary Hospital.
We appreciate your understanding and patience throughout the renovation process. ❤️
Please email us if you have any further questions or concerns at [email protected]
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Lily and Lucy are a sweet pair of silver Manx kittens that match the grey rain filled day we are having today. The Manx cat is most famous for not having a tail, but they also have highly social and playful personalities.
We would like to take the opportunity to wish our Yass & Murrumbateman Veterinary Hospital clients their pets & and all of our wonderful staff a safe and happy Easter break. 🐰🐣🐾
Our models are the very lovely Poppy & Buddy, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels who visited recently for day surgery and rested together comfortably in recovery.
Your pets will appreciate being part of your annual Easter traditions. One thing to avoid, is sharing your rich table scraps as it can put the pet at risk of food poisonings and tummy upsets.
Keep items such as chocolate, avocados, garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, alcohol, raw yeast bread dough, and xylitol (an artificial sweetener found in gum and other items) far away from your pet.
It is best to stick to your pets usual diet over the holidays.
Chocolate remains one of the most common causes of poisoning in dogs. Particularly over Easter, it is a huge concern! Please ensure that you put chocolate well out of reach of pets this long weekend!
🍫🍫 Signs of toxicity start within 6-12 hours of ingestion and include -
▪️ twitching
▪️ vomiting
▪️ diarrhoea
▪️ panting
▪️ restlessness and seizures.
Please contact us immediately on 6226 4444 if your pet accidentally gets to your chocolate!

Did you know 21-27% of horses over the age of 15 have PPID (cushings)? Did you know that in the early stages of PPID, clinical signs can be subtle or absent?
PPID causes clinical signs such as a
- long shaggy coat
-muscle wastage
- a pot-bellied appearance
- recurrent infections (hoof abscesses)
- PPID is associated with laminitis
But what people miss is the often-severe disturbances in their hormones that cause:
-immune dysfunction
-lethargy, &
-depression.
Autumn is the best time to have your horse tested. Why may you ask? In Autumn we see a substantial increase in test accuracy. This is because horses ACTH (ACTH is a hormone made by the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain) concentrations peak in autumn so you are less likely to get false negative tests.
If you have a horse that you suspect might have cushings, this season is the time to test!
If you have a horse that is currently treated for cushings you should be testing every 6-12 months as the disease progresses. The reason behind this is that the medication dose may need to be increased based on test results.
Autumn is the best time to test or retest your horse.
Call and chat to our friendly reception team, open up a chat on our Yass Vet app 9am - 5pm or use our online booking to book your horse an appointment!
We all love hot cross buns over Easter. But did you know that raisins & sultanas are highly toxic for pets? Just a handful of raisins can cause severe illness in a small dog.
Contact us immediately on 6226 444 if your pet accidentally ingests raisins. 🍇
We would like to wish Vet Nurse Lara farewell as she has sadly finished working with us at Yass Valley Veterinary this week. Lara is off on a new adventure moving to the sunshine state! Lara, we are sad to see you go, but we are excited for the new opportunities that lie ahead for you! We know you will do well & wish you all the very best!☀️

🔬Yeast🔬
•aka Malassezia•
These sneaky little things are often the reason your dog may be suddenly uncomfortable with an ear infection, which we call ‘Otitis externa’
Yeast normally live in small numbers on the skin of your dog & often don’t cause a problem. In large numbers, they cause the ear canal to become sore, itchy, red & filled with black discharge.
As vets, we confirm yeast are the cause of infection, with a swab (also known as cytology), specialised stain & examination under a microscope. The reason for this is that your pet can have different kinds of infections that present in similar ways. Your dog can then be prescribed specific medication to treat the yeast infection & end your dogs discomfort.🩺💊

Ollie, the toy poodle visited today and had a pawesome cuddle with Dr Naomi while in recovery after surgery. 🐾
Unfortunately, only about 25% of horses are vaccinated annually in Australia.
Zoetis a global animal health company, and supplier of animal vaccine, have advised that they are experiencing supply issues with Equivac Tetanus Antitoxin (TAT). This shortage reminds us of the importance of tetnus vaccinations for all horses annually.
Please read the below information in regard to vaccine coverage and which category your horse may fall in, in the unfortunate event that it may experience an injury or need surgery:
If a horse is vaccinated annually with Equivac® T or Equivac® 2in1, it should not need to be given Equivac TAT as a prophylactic treatment in event of an injury or surgery.
• In the event of a fresh wound in a horse with a solid history of tetanus vaccination, but no booster within the last year, Zoetis are confident that an immediate booster of Equivac T, or Equivac 2in1 will provide adequate protection against tetanus.
• In the event of a wound that is undetected for several days in a horse with a history of tetanus vaccination, but no booster within the last year, in the absence of Equivac TAT Zoetis recommend an immediate booster, cleansing the wound if possible, and administration of an antibiotic effective against anaerobes (Clostridium tetani).
• If a horse with no vaccination history or uncertain vaccination history is injured, Zoetis recommend an immediate dose of Equivac T or Equivac 2in1, cleansing the wound if possible, and administration of an antibiotic effective against anaerobes (Clostridium tetani), and a booster a month following the primary dose.
As so many horses are unvaccinated, this means that a lot of horses are at potential risk of acquiring tetanus if they injure themselves.
Zoetis & Yass Valley Veterinary strongly recommend boosting or commencing vaccination 2 in 1 for all horses with an overdue or uncertain vaccination history immediately.
Zoetis would further suggest that wherever possible, routine surgeries such as geldings, start a vaccination course with Equivac T or Equivac 2in1 one month prior to the surgery. If an owner administers a dose one month before surgery and the vet administers the booster on the day of the surgery, Zoetis are again confident that protection against tetanus will be achieved.

How does your cat show it loves you?? ❤️❤️❤️
Feline behaviour can be very different to that of dogs and if you haven't been brought up with cats, it's not unusual to question whether your cat loves you or purely sees you as a food source. When a cat rubs or presses their head against you, they are putting their scent on you and claiming you as their own. Sitting on or beside you is also a form of affection, not just a way for them to keep warm. Holding eye contact can be comfortable for cats, but they have been found to do this with people they know and like. Bringing gifts such as dead mice is also a sign of love and finally purring.
So, does your cat love you?
Snowball, the sweetest little Mareema sheepdog puppy from Labrador Rescue, visited Dr. Nicole yesterday with a sore leg. After some x-rays and lots of cuddles, she went home with pain relief to rest up at home. Thanks for all the cuddles, Snowball! ❄️🤍
Did you know that your pet picks up fleas from the environment? Only rarely do fleas jump from one pet to another. Immature fleas wait in the carpet, dirt and doormats for a pet to walk by and jump onto them where they stay and feed on them. Fleas are a top cause for allergies and itchiness in pets, so it is important to keep pets up to date with all year round flea protection.
Call, visit or chat on our Yass Vet app to our friendly reception team about the best product for your pet(s).

May your Christmas be merry, and may your heart be full. Wishing you a safe and happy holiday from all the team at Yass Valley Veterinary! 🎄
Overindulging in the family feast can be unhealthy for humans, but even worse for pets! 🎄Keep the feast on the table-not under it. Eating fatty meats such as ham/turkey or turkey skin - sometimes even a small amount - can cause a life-threatening condition in pets known as pancreatitis. Fatty foods are hard for animals to digest, and many foods that are healthy for people are poisonous to pets - including onions, raisins and grapes. If you want to share a Christmas treat with your pet, make or buy a treat that is made just for them. 🎄No pie or other desserts for your pooch. Chocolate can be harmful for pets, even though many dogs find it tempting and will sniff it out and eat it. There is also an artificial sweetener called xylitol - commonly used in gum and sugar-free baked goods - which can also be deadly if consumed by dogs or cats. 🎄Yeast dough can cause problems for pets, including painful gas and potentially dangerous bloating. 🎄Put the trash away where your pets can't find it. A turkey carcass or cooked bones sitting out on the carving table, or left in a trash container that is open or easily opened, could be deadly to your family pet. Dispose of carcasses and bones - and anything used to wrap or tie the meat, such as strings, bags and packaging - in a covered, tightly secured trash bag placed in a closed trash container outdoors (or behind a closed, locked door). 🎄Be careful with decorative plants. Don't forget that some flowers and festive plants can be toxic to pets.

🦷🐴Does your horse have dental issues or need a dental?🐾🐴 Good News we now have 3 qualified vets to help‼ Dr Naomi Kirkwood completed her further advanced training in horse dentistry with Equine Dental Vets earlier this year. Naomi now joins Dr Stuart Williams & Dr Harry Roach as Yass Valley Veterinary’s power float dental team. What's involved in a power float? Your horse has a full dental examination under sedation and teeth are charted. Teeth then have sharp points, hooks, ramps and other issues corrected by our vet. Although arthritis may be significantly improved with medical managements, it is important to remember that lifestyle changes may also have fantastic results. Weight loss, in over-weight patients, is arguably the most important management strategy implemented to reduce the impacts of arthritis. Losing weight and getting in shape can not only improve your pets health & add years to your pets life, it can also make those extra years more enjoyable. 🐾🐕🐈🐾 Yass Valley Veterinary are here to help, let’s work together to avoid all those nasty diseases that go hand in hand with obesity. With over a decade of research, Hill’s has developed a special fiber blend that activates the body’s natural ability to burn excess fat. Did you see our recent post about canine osteoarthritis? Did you know that cats also get osteoarthritis? Unlike dogs, cats will very rarely display a single limb lameness and often the only signs we see can be quite subtle. As cats develop discomfort associated with osteoarthritis we note that they may reduce their grooming behaviour, no longer jump up onto their favourite sleeping positions (windowsills, bookshelfs, beds, etc), no longer use their cat door as effectively and will sometimes change their eating and drinking behaviours. The good news is, as with dogs, we have many medications that can improve and extend your pet’s quality of life. If you’re concerned about your cat’s comfort levels at the moment, please call one of our clinics to book an appointment today! Merry Christmas to all our wonderful clients and their furry family members from Stuart and the team at Yass Valley Veterinary. 🎄🍒
Incredible things happen every now and then 🤯🤯 ⚜️ ⚜️ ⚜️ ⚜️ Beautiful little Georgia came to the Murrumbateman vet hospital recently with sudden onset paralysis. We did routine diagnostic tests including a clotting time to rule out a snake bite. All had been normal. Lucky for Georgia, a few hours later, evidence of a brown snake in the home was found! She was treated with antivenom and started to recover after 2 days of intensive nursing from our team. Georgia’s story is amazing because often dogs experience rapid death after a brown snake bite without antivenin. It’s usually only cats that have flaccid paralysis. We were all very excited to discharge Georgia to her family and this is a great reminder to bring your animals to our hospital ASAP If you suspect a snake bite. ** More photos in comments
