From an article “It So Happened” with Warren Alleyne
It was in 1838 that Barbados first took initiative towards animal protection when a law was enacted “to prevent the cruel and improper treatment of cattle”. However, nothing was done with regard to other animals until 1875, when, on August 8, a public meeting chaired by the Governor, Sir W. Rawson, was held in the Legislative Council Chamber wit

h the object of forming a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals generally. The following month, a constitution was adopted, and a standing committee elected with Bishop Mitchinson as President and the Rev. Edghill as Secretary. Its annual membership subscription of £5 proved too high, and by 1880 the Society had become moribund. Apparently, only the Secretary, the Rev. Edghill, remained active, and when he died in 1897 the society died with him. In 1903, the Legislature at last found it necessary to reintroduce legislation against cruelty to animals which, so far, is still in force. Formation of the Barbados SPCA. This Society was founded “again” in July 1905 at the instance of Mrs. Dickson, wife of Commander of H M Forces, Major General E T Dickson. The preliminary meeting took place at Queen’s House on July 5, 1905. At this meeting a subscription list was opened and donations were received. A provisional list of officers and a committee was then arranged. A public meeting was called to explain the aims and objects of the society. This meeting was convened at the Wilhelmina Hall. ADOPTABLE - DH378 found himself in our shelter through no fault of his own and he is looking for his forever home. We are told he isn’t good with other dogs, so we realize he will be harder to find a home for but we have hope his perfect home is out there. He is around mixed breed dog, around a year old and roughly 25 pounds. As you can see, he is a happy little guy and we’re sure he will make someone happy.
As with all of our animals, this guy will be neutered prior to leaving our shelter. If you think you can give him a home, please come see us 8-3 Tuesday to Friday or 8-11 on Saturdays to meet him and speak with our adoptions team.

Guys! That was fast! The adoption process has been started on this sweet girl ❤️

ADOPTABLE - can you give DH219 a home? She came to us in May and has grown up in our shelter. It’s not fair. She needs a home and family that love her. Look into those eyes that are begging for love. She is a happy girl, mixed breed and still has some growing to do. She would make a great addition to any home. Please come see her 8-3 Tuesday to Friday and 8-11 on Saturdays and meet our wonderful animals looking for homes.

ADOPTABLE - DH368 found himself at our shelter through no fault of his own. He is a young mixed breed dog, we’re guessing around 6 months old. He is energetic and happy and loves everyone but he does not want to be here at our shelter. Can you give him a home? Come see us 8-3 Tuesday to Friday or 8-11 on Saturdays to view DH368 and our other adoptable animals. Maybe you’ll meet your new best friend 🐾

ADOPTABLE - CH309 has been here since June and has been using his good eye to judge us all ever since he got here. Regardless of the cattitude he gives off when he gives the stink eye, he is actually a VERY sweet boy who deserves a home! He loves lounging but as a growing boy, he also needs space for the zoomies he’s sure to get.
Please come see our boy and the countless other animals we have that are looking for homes. They just want someone to give them a chance. Our adoption hours are 8-3 Tuesday to Friday and 8-11 on Saturdays. Consider opening your home either to CH309 or another one of our animals. You won’t regret it.

Behind The Scenes!
Contrary to how it looks, we do not throw kitten raves! What you are seeing is called a woods lamp test - a test which allows us to see if your feline friends have ringworm. Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin commonly seen in cats that is highly contagious to both cats and humans. While treatable, it does require a course of medication and separation from other animals so as not to spread the infection. So how does the woods lamp work? If the cat does have ringworm, there will be a neon green glow (this baby was woods lamp negative) that alerts us to the infection. If you bring your cat in and fur loss is noted, this will be one of the tests we do to diagnose and it is also the first step in processing found and surrendered cats to our shelter. It is a fast, easy and painless diagnostic tool used daily in our clinic.

ADOPTED!!

ADOPTABLE - you’ve seen DH307 in the posts from last week but we’re going to highlight her again today because this post is all about her (and her ball).
Another victim of coming in found and remaining unclaimed, this precious little girl is sadly one among many at our shelter seeking a home to call their own. We do what we can here to make their lives happy but there’s only so much we can do 💔
This girl needs a home. A family. A yard to play in. A ball she doesn’t have to share with other puppies because it is the most interesting thing in her world. Can you give her that? Come see her and our other animals seeing homes 8-3 Tuesday to Friday and 8-11 on Saturdays.

ADOPTABLE - CH415 was brought in through so fault of her own and is looking for her forever home. She is a super sweet girl who just wants to live out her days in a home. She is an older cat (10 years old) and we really don’t want her to have to live out her life in our over crowded shelter. Can you give her a home? We’re open 8-11 Saturdays and 8-3 Tuesday to Friday. Please come see her and consider giving her a home
