The German Shepherd, also known as the Alsatian or the Deutscher Schäferhund in German, is a breed of dog that originated in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. German Shepherds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and versatility, and are often used as working dogs in a variety of roles, including as police dogs, service dogs, and guide dogs. They are also frequently used as search and rescue dogs, as well as in therapy and assistance roles. German Shepherds are large dogs, typically weighing between 50 and 90 pounds, and standing 22 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. They have a distinctive appearance, with a strong, athletic build, a domed forehead, and pointed ears. Their coat is thick and often colored black and tan, but can also come in other colors such as sable and all black. German Shepherds are known to have a strong protective instincts, which makes them good guard dog, with proper socialization and training.
