What are Low-Tech Tanks?
A low-tech planted tank means that it is good for low-light demanding plants. It also means that:

You will not be using CO2.
There is no need to do huge and/or frequent water changes.
We can use basic filtration. The system does not require crystal clear water and expensive canister filters.
In most cases, the plants will not grow fast. It can take them weeks or even months before they start thriving.
We can use a different type of substrate. However, if we use the substrate that does not have a lot of nutrients in it, depending on the plant, we will have to put nutrients by dosing the water column with all-in-one fertilizers.

Important: If you keep shrimp, snails, and even fish in the tank and plan to use fertilizers, always look at the ingredient list for any product to ensure they are copper-free.

How Much light is Considered Low Light?
Well, this is a very interesting question. The answer is – it depends on the balance in your tank. It sounds strange but let me explain.

If you have high light (without CO2) in the tank, you will get a lot of algae growth. I mean a lot a lot!

Why? Because plants cannot use all light given to them. As soon as CO2 and nutrients are no longer sufficient, photosynthesis slows down. However, if CO2 is available, plants will use way more light for photosynthesis. As a result, they will also consume more nutrients and inhibit algae growth.

That is why low-tech tanks ‘end’ when, in order to maintain the balance, we have to use CO2. Until then, it is low – medium light tanks.

Below you will see the table of Lumens and PAR for planted tanks. All these numbers are the result of a general consensus that hobbyists figured out over years of experience.

Plant Nutrient Deficiency Symptoms
Macronutrients

Calcium (Ca)
Symptoms: New leaves are distorted or hook shaped. The growing tip may die. Contributes to blossom end rot in tomatoes, tip burn of cabbage and brown/black heart of escarole & celery.
Sources: Any compound containing the word 'calcium'. Also gypsum.
Notes: Not often a deficiency problem and too much will inhibit other nutrients.
Nitrogen (N)
Symptoms: Older leaves, generally at the bottom of the plant, will yellow. Remaining foliage is often light green. Stems may also yellow and may become spindly. Growth slows.
Sources: Any compound containing the words: 'nitrate', 'ammonium' or 'urea'. Also manure.
Notes: Many forms of nitrogen are water soluble and wash away.
Magnesium (Mg)
Symptoms: Slow growth and leaves turn pale yellow, sometimes just on the outer edges. New growth may be yellow with dark spots.
Sources: Compounds containing the word 'magnesium', such as Epson Salts
Phosphorus (P)

Symptoms: Small leaves that may take on a reddish-purple tint. Leaf tips can look burnt and older leaves become almost black. Reduced flowers or seed production.
Sources: Compounds containing the words 'phosphate' or 'bone'. Also greensand.
Notes: Very dependent on pH range.
Potassium (K)
Symptoms: Older leaves may look scorched around the edges and/or wilted. Interveinal chlorosis (yellowing between the leaf veins) develops.
Sources: Compounds containing the words 'potassium' or 'potash'.
Sulfur (S)
Symptoms: New growth turns pale yellow, older growth stays green. Stunts growth.
Sources: Compounds containing the word 'sulfate'.
Micronutrients

Boron (B)

Symptoms: Poor stem and root growth. Terminal (end) buds may die. Witches brooms sometimes form.
Sources: Compounds containing the words 'borax' or 'borate
Copper (Cu)
Symptoms: Stunted growth. Leaves can become limp, curl, or drop. Seed stalks also become limp and bend over.
Sources: Compounds containing the words 'copper', 'cupric' or 'cuprous'.
Manganese (Mn)
Symptoms: Growth slows. Younger leaves turn pale yellow, often starting between veins. May develop dark or dead spots. Leaves and shoots diminished in size. Failure to bloom.
Sources: Compounds containing the words 'manganese' or 'manganous'.
Molybdenum (Mo)
Symptoms: Older leaves yellow, remaining foliage turns light green. Leaves can become narrow and distorted.
Sources: Compounds containing the words 'molybdate' or 'molybdic'.
Notes: Sometimes confused with nitrogen deficiency.
Zinc (Zn)
Symptoms: Yellowing between veins of new growth. Terminal (end) leaves may form a rosette.
Sources: Compounds containing the word 'zinc'.
Notes: Can become limited in higher pH.

Helanthium 'Quadricostatus' 🌱

📍Helanthium ‘Quadricostatus’ from South America has characteristic light-green leaves 10-15 cm long which form a good contrast to the darker aquarium plants.

It is most beautiful when planted in groups, each roset becoming 15-20 cm wide. In good conditions, it produces runners which spread over the bottom. Very light leaves are a sign of a shortage of micro-nutrients.

Echinodorus/sword Lily
Echinodorus should be planted in a nutrient-rich substrate like sand or aquatic plant substrate. Gravel is also appropriate. It should be deep enough for the hardy roots of the plant to travel to acquire nutrients. These plants will grow best with a root tab planted below them.
Sword Lily Echinodorus (Echinodorus) is a hardy and popular aquarium plant that is ideal for beginner aquarists. You can easily grow this plant in a variety of different aquariums with different species of fish and invertebrates.

Fish seem to love the soft and large leaves which can provide coverage for them, while this plant helps to improve the water quality by absorbing nitrates that are produced from the fish’s waste.

Although the Echinodorus plants are easy to grow, care for, and remain relatively inexpensive to purchase, they still require care and maintenance so that they can grow and thrive in your aquarium. This article will give you all the tips and tricks you need to know to care for this beautiful aquatic plant.

New Hygrophila species from India
Reddish brown to dark olive green
Fast growth
Recommended for the background
In its emersed form, 'Green Olive' has quite broad-elliptic leaves, the submerged leaves are somewhat narrower. Under good lighting the shoots turn a reddish-brown to dark olive green colour. This plant is not demanding, it can be kept in soft to hard water with pH values from 5 to 8 and temperatures of about 22-28 °C, however a good CO2 supply (20-30 mg/l) promotes its growth. Hygrophila sp. 'Green Olive' grows fast, reaching a height of at least 50 cm. Early trimming promotes the formation of side shoots, and the head cuttings can easily be re-integrated into the plant group - as well as with all stem plants.

Hygrophila sp.'Green Olive' should always be planted in a larger group in the background to create a beautiful harmonious effect. It thrives also well as emersed plant in paludariums where it will develop purplish flowers sitting in the leaf axils.

Hydrophila polysperma prefers soft to moderately hard water that has a pH level of between 5.0 and 8.0. These tropical plants will grow in a wide temperature range of between 640 and 860 Fahrenheit. Polysperma grows in any of the more common substrates, as the species takes its nutrients from the water column
Hygrophila fish tank growing is simple enough. In fact, it's hard to make mistakes with these plants, which are very forgiving. It can tolerate most types of water, but you may want to add a trace mineral supplement once in a while. For substrate, use gravel, sand, or even soil
In its natural habitat in the wild, the hygrophila corymbosa enjoys full exposure to sunlight, but in a tank, it does well with moderate to intense lighting. The pH level of the water should be kept between 5.5 and 8 with the hardness level between 2 dGH and 15 dGH, which is fairly soft
to propagate this plant is simple you just cut it off behind the leaves on the stem. And then you replant it and they'll go back in and start growing again so this plant does have a thick stem.

What light requirements have plants?
Plants do not use all the sunlight that they receive, they only use part of the sunlight light spectrum.

Solar irradiance on earth
Sunlight spectrum radiation
This is the spectrum of the sunlight radiation. The rainbow painted area is what we know as visible light. Visible light coming from sun has something in common, irradiance is high, that means it’s a strong wave, it has a lot of force. To know about plant light spectrum requirements it’s important to know the which parts of the sunlight spectrum do plants need more.

Photosynthetically Active Radiation:
What are plants light requirements:
The next chart show only the visible light spectrum ( from 400 to 700nm ) on were the plants photosynthetic action, or light absorbtion, is more active. The center of the graph has very low values. That means that plants do not require much of the 500-600nm wavelenght, where greens lights are. Plants are not very sensitive to green light source, this is exactly where the human-eye response is higher.

Photosynthetically active radiation – Wikipedia
Human-eye sensitivity VS Plant Photosynthetic Action Response
On this next graph it can be clearly seen. Human eye sensitivity is higher on the green range, exactly where plants photosynthetic action is less active. As a consequence, lighting indoor plants is a different thing than lighting indoor spaces for human eyes. And so, to satisfy plant light requirements well need to use light sources that take into account the plant active ranges, where the plant is more efficient on its photosynthesis process.

Plant photosynthesis response vs human-eye response
Light units of measure: Lumens
Intensity of artificial human light is mesured in Lumens. Lumens is a measure of unit for light intensity at the humane-eye sensitive range. A lot of Lumens means nothing for a plant, cause Lumens refer only to the more sensitive human-eye vision range.

Plants need light on the PAR range, from 400 to 700nm, which is wider than the human ones. PAR is not a unit, it only refer to the range useful for a plant photosynthesis.

This is the reason that grow light are different than conventional lights. Of course, not all the plants have the same photosynthetic response. For each species of plants the photosynthetic response is slightly different. For example: a Savanna tree lighting needs are different than a little orchid that lives under the canopy of a rainforest
