Green City: Is it a nightmare?
Our beloved Dhaka City is called the city of color. But What we miss is the actual color of nature, Green. Our national flag is the symbol of our green and natural Bangladesh. But It turns grey in Dhaka city. Dhaka is one of the most populated mega city on earth. We have approximately 12 millions of people, most of them are not original people of Dhaka. Being the capital of Bangladesh, modern living capabilities, finest education system and Dhaka oriented job opportunities, People are gathering here without thinking about living condition.
Dhaka city has fewer parks than what it needs. Except Ramna and Chandrima Uddyan, there is no big park in the capital for the people to go. Many of the small parks in different localities have been illegally occupied by land grabbers with the help of some deceitful officials of the Dhaka City Corporation as well as the poor rootless people. Many parks are teemed with slums and unhygienic condition which is created there by these people. As a result Greenery in Dhaka is diminishing fast. According to experts, a city needs to devote 25 per cent of its area for greeneries and parks. But the Dhaka city has less than 10 per cent. In a life time, one person needs 8 trees to get his oxygen suppliments, But City dwellers only get half or lower amount of trees to survive. Though the city has been expanding on all sides, it has little scope for creating any green space or enhancing the existing ones.
Exposure to air pollution is the main environmental threat to human health in Dhaka city. Particulate emission is mainly responsible for increased death rate and respiratory problems for the urban population. Reducing Green Space is another environmental degradation. Both problem influenced each other. If we do not protect the green space and do not improve the quality of air it will affect long term to our health.
Dhaka City have bunch of problems that can be mentioned. Food Adulteration is one of them we ever suffered as a city dwellers. Food adulteration in Bangladesh has reached at an alarming stage over the last few years. Basic food items on the market like fish, fruits, oils, vegetables, and sweetmeats are adulterated with hazardous chemicals in an indiscriminate manner. Poisonous residues in food items are leaving worst impacts on people causing cancer, and damaging vital human organs like liver, kidney and heart along with affecting children's mental and physical growth.
