❤️‍🩹 The unlucky Luna came to the clinic with a fence pole stuck in her belly.

👉 The question was whether the pole had entered her abdomen and if it was causing damage to her intestines.

🔍 During the preliminary examination, we found that the pole had indeed entered the abdomen.

✔️ Luna underwent emergency surgery, during which the pole was successfully removed. Fortunately, there was no injury to the intestines. After cleaning the abdomen and intestines to prevent infection, the wound and abdomen were closed.

🌟 Luna made a good recovery and could go back to her happy owner! 🤩

🪱 Parasite control part 2: without dewormers

👉🏻 In part 1 we discussed how worms are controlled with deworming.

⚠️ An important additional strategy against worms is to reduce the intake of worms in horses that enter the pasture.
👉🏻 The better the pasture management, the fewer worms = less need for deworming!

💡 Tips for good pasture management:
✅ Remove the manure from the pasture at least twice a week.
✅ Avoid overcrowded pastures: put a maximum of 3 to 4 horses per hectare of pasture.
✅ Do not use horse manure to fertilize the pasture.
✅ Mow during warm days, then leave the meadow empty for a few weeks.
✅ Rotate the young horses from pasture and do not put high shedders together with the young horses.
✅ Put (small) ruminants on the pasture in autumn-winter: these cut the grass short, ingesting worm eggs without becoming ill.
✅ Isolate new horses and only let them out to pasture for the first time 1 week after deworming.

🔹 Another guttural pouch mycosis that Michael treated with intra-arterial coils!

👉🏻 Guttural pouch mycosis is a fungal infection of the lining of the guttural pouch.
The infection can cause some deep damage to the arteries and nerves. Overtime, the fungus can erode through the wall of vessels, resulting in hemorrhage that can be life threatening.

👉🏻 The cause of guttural pouch mycosis is unknown, but the fungus Aspergillus is the most common type of fungus identified.

☑️ Symptoms:
🔹 Blood seen at the nostrils
🔹 Difficulty swallowing with food sometimes appearing at the nostrils
🔹 Facial nerve paralysis
🔹 Swelling of the neck
🔹 Decreased performance or exercise tolerance
🔹 Headshaking

☑️ Diagnosis:
Endoscopy of the guttural pouch is the goal standard to diagnose guttural pouch mycosis. The appearance of fungal plaques within the guttural pouch confirms the diagnosis of guttural pouch mycosis.

☑️ Treatment:
By trans arterial coil embolization. The small coils aim to occlude or block the affected artery to eliminate the risk of hemorrhage. Once the blood supply to the fungus has been removed via the occlusion of the artery, the fungal lesions usually regress.

☑️ Prognosis:
The prognosis varies depending on what structures were affected by the fungus. Usually the prognosis is good if only the arteries are affected.

Parasite control 🪱🔬

👉🏻 Horses which go out on the pasture can be exposed to worms or contaminate the pasture with worms.
👉🏻 Resistance against deworming is a problem that we see more and more, which increases the problem once more. The consequence is that horses can be sicker when confronted with a worm infestation.

🤔 Did u know that:
✔️ 80% of the worms are excreted by 20% of the horse population? Some horses excrete a lot more worms than others.
✔️ Most horses should not be dewormed on a regular basis each year.
🔬 Targeted deworming based on a f***l analysis in summer leads to less resistance and is cheaper in the long term.
🔬 F***l analysis is most useful from spring till autumn. This means the months the horses spend most time on the pasture. These are also the months where adult worms lay their eggs.

💡 Tips and tricks to be prepared for the grazing season.
✅ Do a f***l analysis before the horse goes into the pasture and deworm when needed. Like this the pasture does not get unnecessarily infected.
✅ Repeat the f***l analysis every 1 or 2 months and as long as the horse goes into the pasture. If a horse has a low excretion of worms, the time between f***l analysis can be prolonged if the same management is applied.
✅ In autumn, it is advised to do a saliva analysis to check for tapeworms. This is a type of worm that is not standard searched for in a f***l analysis. If the contamination of the pasture is low, deworming against tapeworms is not necessary.

Spring is finally here and that also means that the horses are going back to the pasture. 🌱

👉🏻 However, it's important to gradually introduce them to grass under supervision to prevent conditions like colic and laminitis. ❗️

✔️ The following schedule is a guideline to open the grazing season safely!

➡️ We will post more tips about the grazing season in the following days.

🔹 Removal of a sarcoid on the ear

💡 Did you know that sarcoids are one of the most common tumors of the horse?!

👉🏻 This horse presented with a large fibroblastic sarcoid attached to the ear. The ear has very specific and sensitive anatomy so any surgery in this areas should be performed with care.
✔️ The sarcoid was removed with electroscalpel to reduce the risk of spreading of cancerous cells.
✔️ In this case the sarcoid was successfully removed.

➡️ Do not hesitate to contact us if your horse has a sarcoid or a suspicion of a sarcoid, early removal provided a more rapid recovery.

▪️Bleeding from the lungs related to cardiac arrythmias.

👉🏻 During training this horse suddenly started coughing, followed by a nose bleed from both nostrils. The horse was immediately referred to the clinic.

✔️ The lungs were thoroughly examined with ultrasound, radiography and endoscopy. The exams revealed that the source of the bleeding origined in the lungs. Besides that it was noted during the physical exam that the heart had a fast and irregular rhythm.

✔️ An electrocardiogram (ECG) and an echocardiogram were made that confirmed the irregular rhythm. These exams need to be performed without sedation. There were no structural abnormalities of the heart found that could explain the abnormal rhythm.

➡️ A diagnosis of paroxysmal atrium fibrillation was made, which had caused secondary lung bleeding.

✔️ To convert the horse back to normal rhythm, the horse was treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs until a normal rhythm was seen (cardio version).

✔️ During the treatment, the heart rhythm was constantly followed with an elecotrocardiogram. The treatment was successful, and the horse has so far kept a normal rhythm.

NL:

ENG:
👉🏻 Did you know that donkeys should also visit the dentist once a year?

✔️ Donkeys' teeth continue to grow, just like horses'. Therefore, they too can develop hooks on their teeth that need to be floated.

✔️ Donkeys have an average life-span from 27 to 40 years, which is a long time to develop dental problems. In particular, they are prone to develop diastema (spaces between the teeth) and subsequently paradontitis (gum inflammation).

✔️ As donkeys are very stoical animals, they don't easily show that they have a toothache. They'll even pretend to eat to avoid showing the herd that they're "sick". As a result, dental problems are often only noticed when they are already very serious, and sometimes even cause additional health problems.

➡️ Prevention is better than cure! This beautiful herd can continue to show off its beautiful smile! 🤩

NL:

▪️ OCD of the stifle – Reattachment of the cartilage flap in foals

👉🏻 OCD develops due to uneven ossification during growth. A piece of bone with a cartilage flap comes loose from the main bone and forms a classic OCD fragment.

✔️ In foals, the cartilage flap can be reattached using absorbable pins!

✔️ Foals should be checked by x-ray/ultrasound between the age of 4 and 6 months. In this way, we can clearly improve the sports prognosis!

👉🏻 Radiographic screening of other joints is preferably performed at 12-18 months.

➡️ You can send your x-rays to [email protected] for a radiographic evaluation of the joint.

NED:

▪️ Skull fracture

👉🏻 Saphir was brought into the clinic with a fractured skull. He was kicked by another horse. As a result, the bone at the level of the forehead and eye socket was displaced and several bone fragments where loose.

👉🏻 Under general anesthesia, our specialist Dr. Elke Pollaris (dipl. EVDC Eq. ) exposed the fracture and removed the loose fragments. The rest of the skull was reconstructed and stabilized. The wound was thoroughly flushed after which it was sutured.

➡️ After a few days and a favorable evolution, Saphir was allowed to continue recovering at home. Everything has healed nicely in the meantime and Saphir carries on as if nothing had happened.

NL:

▪️Schedelfractuur
