BIOGRAPHY / KRIS VERDONCK

Kris Verdonck (born 1974) studied visual arts, architecture and theatre and this training is evident in his work. His creations are positioned in the transit zone between visual arts and theatre, between installation and performance, between dance and architecture. As a theatre maker and visual artist, he can look back over a wide variety of projects. The artistic practi

ce of Kris Verdonck has developed and expanded in a very fruitful way over the last few years. His projects have been presented on stages as well as in museums in Belgium and abroad. This growth can only be consolidated if a small flexible organisation can follow up and structure the work on a permanent basis. Theatre is never made alone: it is no longer the work of one dog, but about the practice of several dogs that play together. That’s why Kris Verdonck has chosen a name inspired by Friedrich Torberg’s poem, ‘Spleen’: A Two Dogs Company. The company is structurally supported by the Flemish authorities and the Flemish Community Commission (VGC).

We stand behind the message currently displayed on the façades of Flemish cultural institutions, and call on the Belgian government to take stronger action against the grave human rights violations commited by Israel in Gaza and the West Bank. We urge the Belgian government to call for an immediate ceasefire, impose sanctions on Israel, recognise the State of Palestine, and protect human rights organisations. We also call on everyone to join the demonstration on 15 June 2025 in Brussel, organised by 11.11.11

SUSTAINABLE ROBOTICS

Crossing Wires - Arts, AI & Robotics
presented by Ohme and hosted in collaboration with BriAS Brussels Institute for Advanced Studies.

The Garden of the Future imagines an ecosystem where self-sustaining robots, powered by renewable energy sources like solar and wind, perform ecological roles in harmony with natural cycles. Free from batteries or power grids, these robots adapt to energy fluctuations, challenging conventional consumption.

The installation by Kris Verdonck proposes a poetic integration of robotics into ecosystems, encouraging dialogue on sustainable technology and its potential to address environmental challenges.

The core research explores the feasibility, design, and control of low-tech motors that operate solely on the irregular availability of sunlight and wind. This challenges the prevalent model of continuous, stable energy supply, advocating for systems attuned to ecological cycles.

Ohme Lab collaborated with Kris Verdonck on key technical developments, including the design and creation of a robotic woodpecker fulfilling ecological functions inspired by its natural counterpart. The team also explored low-tech motors powered by fluctuating energy sources and contributed to biomimetic designs that align with natural ecosystem rhythms.

While The Garden of the Future remains a work in progress, the residency has laid a strong foundation for continued exploration. The interdisciplinary collaboration between Ohme, Kris Verdonck, and scientific institutions highlights the potential for innovation in sustainable robotics and ecological integration. This ongoing project reexamines energy use, ecological restoration, and the role of art and science in addressing today’s environmental concerns.

STAGES is a yearly residency program initiated by iMAL and A Two Dogs Company. Both organisations join forces to offer a yearly transversal residency opportunity to artists and creators.

We are pleased to announce the second project of our iMAL x A Two Dogs Company / Kris Verdonck residency. For the STAGES #2 residency, a jury, composed of members of A Two Dogs Company and iMAL selected the proposal of Win Ju

During their residency they will work on their project”Medical Black Metal”.
“Medical Black Metal” is a raw and sarcastic universe where the medicalised body meets noise, metal, and tech. Repurposed devices become absurd machines, generating tension, chaos, and humor, while offering a reflection on vulnerability, resistance, and the cathartic power of noise.

LURKER
Subjected to endless streams of information, the figure of the lurker, commonly describing someone who reads the messages in a chat room without taking part, is also a figure that lies hidden, as if in ambush, observing, playfully hiding in the shadows and allowing for ambiguity to happen. Art as a form of camouflage. A form of relating to our surroundings in such a way that we almost disappear in the act.

Grounded in Nō, Butoh and the club dance form Para Para, “Lurker” proposes a Ghostly, empty, floating body, an unsettled being, reluctant to settle into (unhappiness of falling into) a singular identity, immersed in sensation and emotion.

Performed at deSingel Antwerp and now at Tanztage Berlin 2025.

Past & Future Artists in Residency + Open Call STAGES #2

At the end of 2024, we look back at three fruitful technical-dramaturgical residencies at A Two Dogs Company / Kris Verdonck and look forward to hosting three new residents in 2025. These residencies are an essential part of ATDC's commitment to sharing its expertise, acquired over two decades of creating Kris Verdoncks work at the intersection of visual and performing arts.

In addition to offering technical research support from the technical team, residents can make use of the wood and metal workshop as well as a range of media devices in stock. If needed and desired, the ATDC team offers dramaturgical, artistic, productional and organizational advice.

In 2025 we welcome fyllenia grigoriou and Judith Van Oeckel. A third residency, STAGES, is co-organized with iMAL Art Centre for Digital Cultures & Technology, and reflects ATDC’s focus on transdisciplinary art practices.

NOON
'And now the beginning is somewhere else'

Through an extreme landscape, made out of the logic of foam, you make your way in between suspended time, traces of water and petrol. It seems like nothing can happen here. Yet, underneath transformation lingers. Balancing between stillness and motion, the landscape unravels its memories and narratives, from a long time ago - or maybe, now.

‘And now the beginning is somewhere else’ is a performative installation where you are invited inside of. Through space but also through sound, storytelling and choreographic work, the performance creates a world of interconnections, knots and threads.

And now the beginning is somewhere else is a performative installation of NOON collective that functions as an ecosystem. In it, the scenography and its materiality take a central role : developed as a variation around the logics of foam, the installation explores the relational space, which feels kind of viscous and where we are all intermingled.

Through space but also through sound, storytelling and choreographic work, the work harbors a world of interconnections, knots and threads. With playfulness, softness and yet some frictions, we intend to create an installation which feeds different kinds of encounters and emphasizes the porosity of human beings.
We invite the audience together with us into a sensorial experience.
