Did you know that alpacas and llamas require higher levels of selenium than most ruminant species? A deficiency of selenium can lead to reduced fertility (for male and female), embryonic death, abortion, premature birth, stillbirth and weakness of the newborn cria. Selenium passes the blood-placenta barrier, so the cria is born with an adequate reserve of selenium. An important condition is that the dam is not deficient in this trace element.

Agricultural soils in many European regions are often deficient in selenium. To compensate for this, it 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙖 𝙙𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙨. A daily oral supplementation leads to more constant blood serum levels, compared to injectable supplementation once every few months. When feeding Alpamin, it is by no means necessary to supplement extra selenium by injection.

Many of you have shorn their alpacas, or will be shearing them soon. After shearing, the skin of an alpaca is exposed to UV-radiation. This skin exposure to sunlight results in an increase in natural production of vitamin D. Therefore we advise to reduce the daily dose of Alpamin® from 100 gram (winter) to 75 gram (summer) per adult animal per day. This reduction can take please right after shearing. Don’t forget to increase the daily dose to 100 gram again in October!

𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗟𝗣𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗡-𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗨𝗟𝗔:
addition of 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗹, the bioactive form of vitamin D

We all know that midwinter is the critical period for ensuring adequate vitamin D intake in alpacas. During this season, low UV-radiation and longer fleeces do not allow enough natural production of vitamin D in the skin. Eating a daily portion of Alpamin ensures good blood Vitamin D levels for healthy adult alpacas, but aging animals (over 10 years of age) or animals under metabolic stress may sometimes benefit from a bit extra.

After vitamin D (cholecalciferol) is produced in the skin or orally ingested, it goes through a metabolic pathway. It will first be metabolized to 25(OH) vitamin D (calcidiol) in the liver, and consecutively to 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D (calcitriol) in the kidney. Calcitriol is the 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗗, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗗. It regulates intestinal absorption and bone deposition of calcium and phosphorous, 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗲.

Due to a recent change in EU legislation, the manufacturers of injectable Vitamin AD3E preparations, have decided to stop producing these products. To provide an alternative to this, we have developed an oral injector containing Vitamin AD3E: CRIA Vitamin AD3E.

Healthy adult alpacas maintain their vitamin D levels through daily intake of Alpamin®. Young alpacas, going through their first winter, do not always eat enough pellets, and also have a higher requirement for vitamin D (due to bone growth). To check whether a newborn cria has a strong start in life, you can use this checklist. If the cria is experiencing problems, an alpaca veterinarian can often offer solace.

A newborn cria must stand up and try to nurse within a few hours. Any cria that does not attempt to stand up or successfully suckle requires extra support and monitoring. Reasons for a poor start in life include premature birth, hypothermia, oxygen deficiency during birth, or birth defects such as a ventricular septum defect and choanal atresia.

A newborn cria must consume around 10% of its body weight in colostrum within the first 24 hours. Practically speaking, this is at least 500 ml. The strength of a cria’s immune system depends entirely on the antibodies in the colostrum. These antibodies will no longer be absorbed by the intestinal wall after around 24 hours after birth.

So, a difficult first day very often means poor immunity and death due to infection during the first four days of life. An antibody deficiency can after day two only be corrected by having a veterinarian administer a plasma infusion.

Checklist newborn cria:

1. Disinfect the navel by dipping it in iodine tincture.

2. Check whether the cria actively suckles within the first three to four hours.

3. Weigh the cria when it is dry at the end of the day of birth. Weigh the cria daily for the first three to four days to monitor weight progress. A cria can lose weight on day two, but must gain at least 150 grams per day from day three, i.e. at least 1 kg per week.

4. Not sure whether the cria has gotten enough colostrum during the first 24 hours? Have the veterinarian take a blood sample on day two to check the total amount of proteins and antibodies. If these levels are too low, a lifesaving plasma infusion can be administered. Too few antibodies usually means that the cria will not survive.

5. Crias with problems can be supported by bottle feeding, tube feeding, a plasma infusion and other treatments.

NUTRITIONAL ADVICE FOR LATE PREGNANCY

Many alpaca females are now entering the final trimester of their pregnancies. In this physiological stage, it is important to pay attention to the LEVEL OF PROTEIN in the total diet. Proteins are the major building blocks for muscles and organs, and the rapid fetal growth during these latest months of pregnancy, requires an increased intake of protein. For late pregnancy we advise a crude protein level of 12-14% in the total diet. If your hay does not contain adequate protein, you can increase its level by adding more Alprofos to the diet of your animals. In addition, Alprofos contains the macrominerals calcium and phosphorus in the right proportions, to facilitate healthy growth of the fetal bones. Adequate nutrition during late pregnancy affects fetal growth, cria viability and vitality, quality and quantity of colostrum and milk and future fertility of the dam in a positive way!
