Know the best way to give hay🐴🌾?

‘The Impact of Different Hay Feeders and Roughage Availability on Horses' Behavior and Health 🌾🐎

If you're a horse owner, groom or equine vet, you'll want to know about the effects of hay feeders on your equine friends! 🐎

Researchers recently conducted a study comparing three feeding methods for horses - free choice hay (FC), a slow feeder (SF), and an automated box feeder (BF). Let's dive into what they found! 🧐

1️⃣ **Hay Consumption:** FC horses gobbled up more hay daily, around 16.6 kg, compared to BF (10.4 kg) and SF (9.30 kg). As a consequence, FC horses also packed on more weight, gaining 23.5 kg, whereas BF and SF horses gained significantly less.

2️⃣ **Behavioral Insights:** SF horses spent over half their time foraging, mimicking natural grazing behavior. In contrast, BF horses spent less time eating and more time standing, sniffing the ground, and even practicing coprophagy (eating 💩) They also displayed higher aggression levels.

3️⃣ **Cortisol Circadian Rhythm (CCR):** Surprisingly, CCR remained consistent across all three feeding methods.

In summary, the study suggests that while free choice hay allows horses to express natural behaviors, it can lead to weight gain and hay waste. Slow feeders help control consumption and reduce certain undesirable behaviors. 📚
