Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) We enhance animal health, animal welfare, public health and the protection of the environment by promoting the veterinary profession FVE was founded in 1975.

We represent national veterinary organizations across 36 European countries and 4 technical sections, each of which represents key groups within our profession: Practitioners (UEVP), Hygienists (UEVH), Veterinary State Officers (EASVO) and Veterinarians in Education, Research and Industry (EVERI).

FVE has endorsed a joint letter urging the EU to develop a bold Strategy that prioritizes environmental action to reduce pathogen spillover risks and future epidemics and pandemics of zoonotic origin.

Backed by 40+ stakeholders, the letter was sent to EU Commissioner Vรกrhelyi, aligning with FVEโ€™s Position paper on pandemic preparedness. Strengthening the environmental pillar is key to a safer, more resilient European Union.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) set a record in 2024, recommending 25 for marketing authorization โ€“ the highest ever in a single year! These include:
โœ… 14 vaccines, with 7 developed using biotechnological processes.
โœ… Two new vaccines featuring innovative active substances:

On 16 January 2025, over 200 veterinarians across Europe joined the European Medicines Agency EMA/FVE webinar on the prescription โ€˜Cascadeโ€™ (Articles 112โ€“114 of the Veterinary Medicines Regulation (2019/6)). The Cascade allows vets to provide optimal care when authorised medicines arenโ€™t available, addressing the diverse needs of various animal species.

Highlights included:
โœ… Exploring unique complexities of veterinary medicine, from managing pharmaceutical needs for food-producing animals to companion animals and aquatic species.
โœ… Case studies showcasing real-world applications of the Cascade.
โœ… Updates on aligning with Regulation (EU) 2019/6.

๐ŸŒŸ Marine graduated from the University of Liรจge (Belgium). She brings a strong academic background in veterinary medicine and molecular biology and expertise in business and administration. Sheโ€™ll be key in the VetJoy project and the EVERI section.

๐ŸŒŸ Damjan, an intern from North Macedonia, is passionate about equine health and welfare. With experience in equine internal diseases and surgery, heโ€™ll support our work until June 2025.

๐Ÿ– On Friday, January 10th, FVE and Eyes on Animals hosted an insightful webinar titled โ€œIn Search of a More Humane Alternative to CO2: Improved Pig Handling for Automatic Electrical Stunning Systems,โ€ presented by Lesley Moffat and veterinarian Dr Kees Scheepens.

The webinar highlighted the urgent need for systemic changes in slaughterhouse operations to prioritise while maintaining efficiency. The webinar explored one project looking at how to improve animal welfare in slaughter.

The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) was honoured to participate in the Italian Veterinary Chamber (FNOVI) national council, represented by FVE Vice President Massenzio Fornasier, Executive Director Nancy De Briyne, Treasurer Piotr Kwiecinski, and UEVP President Volker Moser.

With around 150 participants from regional veterinary chambers, we engaged in three key roundtables:
โ€ข Evolving Veterinary Profession โ€“ Addressing recruitment, retention, and the decreasing number of veterinarians in farmed animal practices.
โ€ข Preventive Medicine & Regulations โ€“ Highlighting the need to clarify regulations, avoid sanctions, and promote the FVE cascade.
โ€ข Sustainable Business Models โ€“ Exploring innovative healthcare models and sustainability initiatives to support the profession amid workforce challenges.

FVE President Siegfried Moder shared his expertise on the FMD measures in Germany on the main television channels and exchanged with Commissioner Christophe Hansen at the agricultural fair Grรผne Woche in Berlin.

After the confirmation of three cases in water buffalos on January 11th, stamping out and safe disposal in a 1 km zone of all susceptible animals and in one contact establishment were executed. While no new cases have been confirmed by now, the economic damage caused by export bans from several third countries is enormous. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.

On May 30-31, FVE President ๐’๐ข๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ ๐Œ๐จ๐๐ž๐ซ, FVE Vice-President ๐Œ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ณ๐ข๐จ ๐…๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐ž๐ซ, and UEVP President ๐•๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ participated in the General Assembly of the ๐€๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐„๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ง ๐•๐ž๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐„๐๐ฎ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐„๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ (๐„๐€๐„๐•๐„). Nearly 300 delegates from 36 countries across 4 continents convened in Paris, marking a return to the founding place of #EAEVE 36 years ago. Professor Bernard Toma, former director of the ร‰cole nationale vรฉtรฉrinaire d'Alfort - EnvA, highlighted EAEVE's achievements. During the assembly, delegates elected Professor Petra Winter from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna Vetmeduni as the new EAEVE President. Key highlights from the event include Educational Day, which focused on the: ๐Ÿšฉ use of Artificial Intelligence, ๐Ÿšฉ Day 1 competences, and ๐Ÿšฉ the teaching of Veterinary Public Health. Dr. Massenzio Fornasier presented FVE's efforts to address workforce shortages in the veterinary field. It was an inspiring gathering, reinforcing the commitment to advancing veterinary education and practice.
