Street Hearts BG

Street Hearts BG is a non-profit licenced dog shelter based near Dryanovo, Bulgaria. By educating and providing free neutering, we hope to reduce this problem.

We are an independent NGO (no. 177224528) that works alongside Dryanovo municipality in Bulgaria in order to try and reduce the street dog population. Our main aim is to neuter street dogs and work with owners to educate and facilitate neutering their pets. Many dogs have been dumped on the streets because they are ill, pregnant, or simply because their owners do not want them anymore. We have a s

mall annual budget from the municipality for neutering dogs, which quickly runs out as we are neutering six dogs per week on average. We rely on public donations and fundraising events in order to fund neutering, medical care, food, and to build suitable facilities for the dogs. Some dogs are not fit to be returned to the streets due to illness, injury, or because they will be harmed by people. We rehabilitate these dogs, train them, and find them homes. Finding good forever homes and responsible owners for our dogs is essential, and we are fully licenced to transport them to their new families.

🇬🇧 "Mr Wiggles was so quiet when we got him home. It was a little bit strange seeing a puppy so still. That all changed within seven days: a week later, he was dragging everything out onto the floor, chewing towels and behaving exactly as you would expect a puppy to behave. We started to take him on holiday with us, to Wales, to Scotland and different parts of England. He loved it and we couldn't be happier".

"About a year after we adopted Mr Wiggles, Emma contacted me and asked how I felt about adopting Connie, his mother. She knew that I had always liked her, and life in the shelter was no longer working out for her. Street Hearts had spent a lot of time working with her to improve her confidence, but as often happens with sanctuary dogs, the shelter environment became too much for her. As her behaviour had started to regress, a new home somewhere else was becoming the best option for Connie".

"Emma brought Connie over to England and we agreed that it was best to meet on neutral territory. We met in a dog field, and Mr Wiggles instantly knew Connie was his mum. Connie, on the other hand, looked a bit shell-shocked. For the first few days, she seemed traumatised, and I think it took her a couple of weeks to realise who Mr Wiggles was. It was six weeks before she realised that she was here to stay".

"Once she had been here for a reasonable period of adjustment, we took the dogs to a caravan for a holiday. When we came home, she behaved like a different dog. It was as if she realised that she was with us permanently and this was always going to be her home. No matter what happened, no matter where we took her, she understood that she would always come back and be with us".

🇬🇧 We were beyond thrilled to welcome the incredible Toby Strong - cinematographer, multi-Emmy and BAFTA winner, and creative director - to our shelter earlier this year. Not only is Toby a phenomenal talent, known for his work on projects like 'Planet Earth' with Sir David Attenborough, but he's also a genuinely wonderful person. Toby adopted Moose (formerly Jamie), one of Nigella's puppies. Here's what he had to say about his adoption experience:

"I've wanted a dog for a long time now, but where that dog came from was hugely important to me. I've spent my life with animals, and their welfare is paramount. I wanted to get a rescue, and I looked around Europe for a long time, but Street Hearts just stood head and shoulders above everyone else due to their morality, integrity, how they worked… everything about them".

"I got in touch and did my two-hour interview. It was really in depth and, you know, Street Hearts will turn you down if they don't think you're right for their dogs. It's not about money; it's about the welfare of their dogs".

"I travelled to Bulgaria and visited the shelter for a few days, as I wanted to pick my dog in person. It was beautiful to stay there; the food was wonderful, the company was incredible, and I got to spend time with Nigella's litter and narrow down my choice of the pups. I did feel terrible about this, though; it was almost like doing the voting off on X Factor!"

"Jamie, who I renamed Moose, was my choice. He's a 'bomb proof' dog, which is what I need, as I travel so often. Moose travelled back with me on a plane, in a little soft crate by my side, and he was just remarkable. Nowadays, his favourite thing in the world is driving. He jumps in the car, sits there, falls asleep, and is just blissed out by being in the car. The other thing he loves is sailing, which I also adore. At present, we're on a boat, and he's curled up next to me on a seat".

"If you're going to get a rescue dog, why wouldn't you go to Street Hearts? I don't know anyone who cares about the welfare of their dogs more than they do. They just go that extra mile, and they are remarkable people. I cannot recommend them enough".

"Свързах се с тях и проведохме двучасово интервю. Беше много задълбочено и както знаете, Улични Сърца няма да се поколебаят да ви дадат отказ, ако смятат, че не сте правилният човек за техните кучета. Те не го правят заради парите; всичко опира до даването на най- добрия шанс на животните."

"Отидох до България и посетих приюта за няколко дни, тъй като исках лично да избера своето куче. Беше прекрасно да отседна там; храната беше превъзходна, компанията невероятна и прекарах доста време с кученцата на Найджела, избирайки своя нов приятел. Почувствах се ужасно заради това; чувството беше почти като гласуването в X Factor!"

"Джейми, чието име промених на Муус, беше моят избор. Той е перфектното куче, а аз се нуждаех точно от това, тъй като пътувам много често. Мус си тръгна с мен и летяхме до Франция. 🇬🇧 "Hello there. My name is Rosie... well, that's what the people here call me. I've been through a lot lately, and I want to share my story with you".

"Not long ago, I was with my humans, the ones I thought would always love and protect me. However, one day, they left me all alone in the middle of nowhere. I was so scared. No houses, no people, no food, and no water - just me, in the dark, and the sounds of jackals and other wild animals. I hid in a bush, my little heart pounding, hoping that someone – anyone - would come to save me. I'm just a puppy... I didn't know what to do".

"Then, as if by a miracle, a kind lady drove by. She heard me crying, scooped me up, and took me to a place called Street Hearts BG. It's safe here, and even though everything is new and a bit overwhelming, the people are really nice. They've given me a quiet spot to relax while I get used to all of the new dogs and sights. I'm starting to feel hopeful again".

"I'm still nervous, but I'm already making friends with the humans here. They give the best cuddles, and I'm showing them just how sweet and loving I can be".

Dogs, just like us, have deep feelings. Imagine being torn away from everything and everyone you know, only to be abandoned and left all alone. It's heart-breaking and utterly unacceptable.

🇬🇧 Today marks Archer's 381st day at Street Hearts BG! This sweet boy has spent most of his life in our care, and while we've made sure that he's had all the love and support he deserves, nothing quite compares to finding him a furever home.

Well, Archer's time has finally come! This gorgeous soul will be leaving us tomorrow to join his two loving humans and a Collie fur-sibling, Sam, who are eagerly waiting to welcome him into their family. While we'll miss him dearly, we couldn't be happier for our dear Archer!

🇬🇧 Lady Grace has shown us just how fantastic she really is! She's been fully assessed by our team and is amazing with dogs of all ages and sizes.

Most days, she hangs out in the garden of Lauren's bungalow, where she's a perfect mix of playful and neutral with her fellow Street Hearts. On top of that, she's been loving her long walks and is making great progress in losing some of those extra pounds she had when she first arrived.

🇬🇧 Do you remember Marla, our miracle girl who came to us unable to walk?

After seven months of love and care, Marla is not only walking but thriving. She's become more comfortable around other dogs and is now happily joining her fellow Street Hearts on outdoor adventures! We're working on helping her make some new furry friends, and she's doing great!

As you can see from these photos, her 'pen pals' (a.k.a. her toys) don't always get the same VIP treatment! However, with her shelter buddies, she's nothing but a sweetheart!

We're so proud of how far Marla's come - and she'll be searching for a home very soon! Watch this space!

Bentley is such a good boy. He loves being around other dogs and needs a fur buddy in his future home to truly thrive! He's non-destructive, crate trained, great on-lead, and almost fully house-trained. All he needs is a loving adopter to help him cross the finish line!

🇬🇧 Abandoned in the winter of 2022 alongside his mother, Nina, Flint's life took a new turn when he found a loving home with Debbie in Matlock, UK. Their journey of learning and bonding together has been incredible, and now, Debbie shares an insight into the moments that've shaped their lives:

"In the beginning, I was conscious of allowing Flint plenty of time to settle in before placing him in situations that might be overwhelming. At the same time, I didn't want to totally shield him from everything he would encounter in a normal run-of-the-mill day. I am lucky enough to live near woodland which is very similar to the area we see the dogs enjoying on their pack walks in Bulgaria, so I opted for that for many of his first walks to give him something that felt familiar".

"We are so lucky to have adopted a dog from Street Hearts. The training Flint received prior to his adoption, specifically the crate training, has been invaluable. Flint still accepts the crate as his chillout zone and will take himself in there for 'me time'!"

"One of the most important things I'd like to encourage people with is, please, don't worry about trying to make everything perfect. It can sometimes feel like you are going backwards with any training, or a new behaviour might present itself. If illness and discomfort have been ruled out, this is perfectly normal. This has happened to us and there is no shame in going back to basics and reaching out for help and advice, particularly asking for advice from Street Hearts, which we did when Flint was going through his adolescence. We'd had three dogs prior to adopting Flint, and we were reassured that Flint's adolescent behaviour was normal. It's easy to forget that. Patience, consistency, and routine help to maintain a good balance".

"Working on the bond Flint and I have is a precious thing. I've said before that he is truly my best friend, but overthinking and too much comparison with others can spoil the joy of being a true partnership".

"Flint has asked me to add this last point... always remember that the occasional trip out to share the contents of a sausage cob (for example) is absolutely essential!"

"Щастливи сме, че осиновихме куче от Улични Сърца БГ. Обучението, което Флинт е получил преди пристигането си при нас е безценно. Флинт все още използва клетката за почивка и влиза в нея, когато се нуждае от време за себе си!"

"Едно от най- важните неща, за което бих искала да окуража хората е, че не трябва да се опитват да направят всичко перфектно. Понякога може да усещате, че правите стъпка назад в обучението или пък може да се появи ново нежелано поведение. Ако сте изключили болести и дискомфорт, това е абсолютно нормално. Това се случи и на нас и не се срамувахме да се върнем отначало, да потърсим помощ и съвет, и в частност, съвет от Улични Сърца БГ, когато Флинт приминаваше през тийнейджърската си възраст. Имали сме три кучета преди да осиновим Флинт и ни увериха, че поведението му е напълно нормално за тази възраст. Това лесно се забравя. Търпение, постоянство и рутина са ключа към подържането на добър баланс."

"Процесът на изграждане на връзката между мен и Флинт беше изключително ценен и за двама ни. Казвала съм и преди, че той е моят най- добър приятел, но прекаленото мислене и сравнение с други кучета може да развали радоста от истинската връзка."

"Флинт ме помоли да добавя това... винаги помнете, че случайните разходки, за да споделите парче салам (например) са абсолютно задължителни!"

Dumping season… With 32 puppies already in the shelter and an influx of pleas to help more abandoned puppies, this sound is exactly how our team are feeling right now😅 As much as we love them, puppies are one of the most time consuming and expensive parts of what we do. Our small team strives to train, socialise and care for our puppies to the highest standard we possibly can, in order to set them up for their futures. A warm welcome to our new boy, Elvis!⁣Despite his size, Elvis is only around eight weeks old! He was born on the streets as a sole puppy to a street dog we had been trying to catch for some time. This dog happens to be Angel’s daughter, which means Elvis is actually Angel’s grandson! 🥹⁣⁣To ensure Elvis has the best start for his future, he was brought to the shelter so we can begin his onward journey. As soon as we are able to continue doing our outreach work, Angel’s daughter will be top of the list to try to catch. ❤️ ⁣⁣Like his namesake, Elvis has a big personality and an even bigger voice!
