Street Hearts BG

Street Hearts BG is a non-profit licenced dog shelter based near Dryanovo, Bulgaria. By educating and providing free neutering, we hope to reduce this problem.

We are an independent NGO (no. 177224528) that works alongside Dryanovo municipality in Bulgaria in order to try and reduce the street dog population. Our main aim is to neuter street dogs and work with owners to educate and facilitate neutering their pets. Many dogs have been dumped on the streets because they are ill, pregnant, or simply because their owners do not want them anymore. We have a s

mall annual budget from the municipality for neutering dogs, which quickly runs out as we are neutering six dogs per week on average. We rely on public donations and fundraising events in order to fund neutering, medical care, food, and to build suitable facilities for the dogs. Some dogs are not fit to be returned to the streets due to illness, injury, or because they will be harmed by people. We rehabilitate these dogs, train them, and find them homes. Finding good forever homes and responsible owners for our dogs is essential, and we are fully licenced to transport them to their new families.

Dudley is pleased to announce that he is the first puppy of the year to be on the naughty step!

3 weeks ago he broke his leg doing zoomies in the garden and he has been a little rascal ever since! The cast has been discarded (ripped off) several times and he has protested against resting or wearing a boring cone!

We are pleased to say that he has proved to us that he doesn’t need our “advice” and his leg is now healing nicely, thank you very much.

All joking aside, we are really pleased with his progress. He is now weight bearing nicely and he will be going to the vets for X-rays later in the week.

As the year draws to a close, we're taking a moment to reflect on all that we've achieved together in 2024 at Street Hearts BG. What a year it's been!

🐶 148 dogs neutered / spayed – not just our shelter pups, but also owned and street dogs, through our neutering programme, as we continue to reduce the stray population and give dogs a better future.

🐶 87 dogs found their furever homes – 87 lives changed; 87 new families completed!

🐶 Learning and teaching – Emma attended a fantastic course at Battersea, and we held educational talks in Bulgaria and at schools and universities in the UK, spreading awareness and knowledge about who we are and what we do.

🐶 We launched our book, 'Street Hearts: An Extraordinary Story of Saving Street Dogs'! From bookshops to radio shows and adopter meetups on dog fields, it's been an amazing journey sharing our story with the world!

🐶 Becoming a UK charity – thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised enough funds to cover our solicitor's fees to (finally) become a UK charity in 2025. This is a huge milestone, and we couldn't have done it without you!

As we look ahead to 2025, we're excited about what the future holds. One thing is certain: none of this would be possible without your support. Thank you for standing by us, cheering us on, and helping us make a difference in the lives of dogs in need.

🐶 Регистриране на фондацията във Великобритания- благодарение на вашата невероятна щедрост, събрахме достатъчно средства да покрием правните разходи, за да можем най- сетне да се регистрираме във Великобритания през 2025. Това е огромна стъпка и нямаше да се справим без вас!

🇬🇧Meet Tonny 😍

Tonny is 18 months old and has been used to guard chickens, however his owners have moved abroad. They contacted us because they didn’t want to do the traditional thing and leave the dog on the streets, they wanted to do the right thing for him. They even took him for neutering and a full vet check last week at our request.

Abandonment is the biggest issue in Bulgaria, this is why there is a stray dog problem. To surrender a dog is a much kinder option and it also helps us to know the dogs history so that we can find the right home in the future.

Tonny was a bit shy when he first arrived at the shelter yesterday. 24 hours later he is wanting cuddles and belly rubs. Isn’t he a handsome chap? We are really looking forward to assessing him and finding him a home in 2025.

Тони е на 18 месеца и е охранявал стопанство с кокошки. Собствениците му обаче трябваше да заминат в чужбина. Те се свързаха с нас за помощ, тъй като не желаеха просто да го оставят на улицата, а да направят най- правилното за него. По наша молба, дори го заведоха да бъде кастриран и прегледан от ветеринар.

Изоставянето на кучета е огромен проблем в България, който е в основата и на проблема с бездомните животни. Да оставите кучето си в приют е много по- мила постъпка, а и по този начин можем да научим повече за неговата история, което ще не улесни в намирането на подходящ за него дом.

Тони беше малко срамежлив при пристигането си в приюта вчера. 24 часа по- късно, той е напълно готов за прегръдки и галения по коремчето. Не е ли красавец? Нямаме търпение да го опознаем по- добре и да му намерим нов дом през 2025.

🇬🇧 We opened a packet of super special meaty treats for the dogs, and as always, they know the routine - sit, wait, and be patient. Angel and Sara nailed it, sitting so politely... but then there's Big Lad. You can tell he's a bit too excited to get his snack! His face says it all! 😆

"Most of you are aware that my mum is trying to raise much-needed funds for Street Hearts by doing a daily dip in a lake every day up to, and including, New Year's Eve".

"When I used to live at Street Hearts, Anthony used to always go on about when he was a North Sea commercial diver. He never stopped talking about cold water and stuff. Well, can you imagine traveling 2,000 miles with 19 of my four-legged friends in the back of a van, hearing Anthony talk about his diving and cold-water stories? Poor Lauren. She had to listen to his tales for days and pretend to be interested and try not to fall asleep!"

"They thought us dogs in the back were being extremely good and quiet. Well, although we were, the truth is we'd heard these cold water stories over and over, again and again… in fact, it actually sent us all off to sleep. I had a bet with Street Heart dog Kate and Street Heart dog Elvis how long in the morning it would take Anthony to start talking about his cold-water dives, and then how long it would take Lauren before she fell asleep".

"So, on behalf of me and my friends, Peaches, Martha, Laura, Elvis, River, Regina, Rory, Priscilla, Monica, Marco, Archer, Jessica, Kiki, Charlie, Keith, Mary, Gordon, and the lovely Kate, we challenge you, Anthony, to go in the river near you on the same day my mum does her last dip. This is the 31st of December, UK time, 10am (midday Bulgarian time). You can only wear your bathers; no snorkel, no flippers, no wetsuit, just your bathers. Oh, and you have to record it as well. Not as though we don't believe you'll do it; we do, because we know Emma will kick your ass and make sure you do! So, the challenge is on, Anthony. Do you accept?"

🇬🇧Day 3 of snow and no electricity! The dogs are happy with full tummies and enjoying the log fires at night.

The dogs all had an extra Christmas dinner today. Mabel is still licking her lips!

To everyone in Bulgaria, stay warm and feed any street dogs in your neighbourhood if you can. Also any elderly neighbours who may not be able to get outside and feed their dogs. Every dog needs good food right now to help them survive the harsh winter ❤️🐾

🇬🇧 Tati and Rosti are two of the best-looking pups at the shelter... but shh, don't tell them we said that! We don't want them getting too full of themselves! This adorable pair are absolutely stunning, and everyone who meets them falls in love with them just as much as we have.

Bryn is retiring!

In November 2021, Bryn moved to Bulgaria, to live at Street Hearts, and he embarked on a 3 year long career working at the shelter. Bryn took on 3 main jobs during his time in Bulgaria: First and foremost - Chief of Fun Police 👮‍♀️🚨 This was a role that the shelter never knew it needed… until Bryn arrived. Bryn worked for 1095 days straight doing this role, insisting he didn’t need to take any annual leave. This work was more of passion project for him, he wanted to restore order… and that’s just what he did ❤️ Secondly, bryn took on the part time role of ‘Uncle Bryn’ 👴🏼 This role consisted of being a stable and trustworthy role model for dogs that needed a helping hand with their training. Bryn‘s nonchalant attitude with absolutely everyone and everything (excluding cats), meant that during his time at the shelter, he had a natural gift for helping dogs with their training journeys. Who would have thought that the unclaimed bull breed from the pound would end up helping the abandoned street dogs in Bulgaria? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Bryn’s final role at the shelter, was working as a full time ‘Good Boy’. 👼 Due to numerous factors, Bryn wasn’t good with dogs before he moved to Bulgaria, and he also suffered greatly with separation anxiety. But just as committed as he was to his other job roles, he worked tirelessly to overcome these hurdles during his time here, and as the video shows, he is now a very social boy who is so comfortable with his own company now too. ❤️ Bryn has thoroughly enjoyed his time in Bulgaria, and all the experiences it has brought him, but now it’s time for him to go back to his motherland to retire. Thank you for your service Bryn 🫡

Dumping season… With 32 puppies already in the shelter and an influx of pleas to help more abandoned puppies, this sound is exactly how our team are feeling right now😅 As much as we love them, puppies are one of the most time consuming and expensive parts of what we do. Our small team strives to train, socialise and care for our puppies to the highest standard we possibly can, in order to set them up for their futures.
