Life in the jungle also means having great encounters !

A source of fear for some or wonder for others, our little animals that swarm, crawl and climb everywhere are part of our daily lives 🥰

🕷 "Little" tarantulas in the kitchen? No problem!
🐍 A snake that sneaks along the jungle paths? We say hello
🐸 Frog in the sink? We'll do the dishes later..
🦂 A scorpion in the bed? Well, we'll gently put it back under a rock, there are limits to privacy!

But in any case, living with these animals also teaches us to respect them: we are in their home and their presence is part of our ecosystem.

They all play a role, whether it's regulating their prey or being a link in the food chain, let's take an interest in them and (most of the time) they won't hurt us. 😇

After showing you the progress of our first group of howler monkeys, it's the turn of our group of capuchins !

🐒🐒🐒 Arrived a little less than a year ago at the center, our first 3 capuchins (Loki, Hati and Tyson) are still doing wonderfully and are now joined by 2 larger capuchins and another very young one (we'll introduce them to you soon 😉).

🍼🍌 And in one year, our little monsters have grown up! Feeding mainly on milk when they arrived, they now devour seeds, fruits, leaves and nuts.
🌳 They spend most of their time in the trees or playing with each other whereas when they arrived they were stuck to us. And finally, their cage remains permanently open now so that they can sleep outside!

The goal, a bit like for howler monkeys, is to make them autonomous quickly by gradually cutting off contact and leaving them as much as possible in natural conditions

🕙 For the moment, the group only includes very young or young individuals and reintroducing them is a long-term goal because some must be big enough to defend the others if we want them to survive in the wild. Another option would be for them to be accepted into the wild group that turn around the center. We'll keep you updated 😃

🦝 Here's Shanti, our Coati !

Shanti arrived at the center at approximately three months. A member of the community decide to give her to us so she could live here a good life.

She is very independent but loves to come say hi to volunteers during the day. She also loves her time playing with the capucino monkeys.

🐗 She had a sweet ‘frenemy’ bond with Kore, sometimes being super sweet and sometimes hard playing.

🍽 She is often away in the jungle looking for food (very good at it).

You can see how much she grew up in only a few month !! We might soon say goodbye to her as she go back in the jungle 🌱👋

🥳 Feliz Navidad and happy end of year to everyone!!

A little break for the Cruz Verde team and the volunteers after this eventful end of year in terms of changes, difficult but also joyful and moving moments.

🎁 It was the opportunity to bring together some members of the communities to celebrate Christmas and please children 😉

The center is growing little by little and welcomes lots of new animals. So many challenges to understand how to help them as best as we can and that we will try to meet next year as well as all the following ones 💪

✨️ Thank you to all those who accompanied us this year, take care of yourselves and see you next year!!

💔 Hello everyone, we are sorry to announce the death of Ali.
The operation could not save him and despite all the efforts of veterinarians and Dr Daniel his heart stopped.

Ali will have been an incredible monkey at La Cruz Verde. Always kind, never aggressive or difficult with food, he helped a lot our females to develop their maternal instinct by cuddling with them.
Thank you to him for making our volunteers laugh with his antics and his adorable little face 🧡

We also wanted to say a word about howler monkeys.
They are one of the most fragile species of monkeys. Nearly 50% of them die in captivity. The reasons are multiple.

Firstly, they are monkeys that quickly tend to depression when they change their environment, diet or social landmarks ... And can let themselves die if they are not well.
They are also very sensitive digestively (a cold snap and their intestine can no longer digest properly) and can therefore also quickly die from an illness or parasites.
Finally, they are not robust like capuchins or coaties, a bad fall can hurt them a lot.

Despite these risks and difficulties, the center is one of the few in Bolivia to welcome them and one of the only ones to work with them freely with an objective to reintroducing them.

This is also why we are currently doing tests to determine more precisely how and why he had this problem in the thorax. From the first results it seems that adding to hus thorax issue, he had a malfunctionning lung probably caused by the forests fires occuring this pasts years.

We hope that with this way of doing things we will be able to prevent or cure more easily and quickly if such things happen again.

Thank you again to all for your support ❤️

🏥 Hello everyone, we are making this post to inform you about Ali's health.

His condition deteriorated very quickly. We tested him for salmonella or parasites but it wasnt that.

🩺 Fred is with him in La Paz and with our veterinarian to try to cure him. The latest news is that he has a deformation in his chest (thorax), so he will be operated on immediately.

We are doing everything to save him. We will keep you informed of his condition in the coming days.

If at the same time you want to help us finance his care and operation which cost a lot of money, thank you very much, and we keep our fingers crossed for him 🧡🤞

Some news about Kyra's cage !

🐕 Thanks to your donations, the work to expand our bush dog's cage is finished!

Although our volunteers go out with her a good part of the day, we wanted her cage to be big enough to allow her an access to the big pool.

🤿 And she is slowly getting more confident around the water and practicing her swimming skills. As a bush dog, a species often living around water, this is a huge step towards providing her a life at the center that would be as similar as possible to what bush dogs have in the wild.

🥰 Big thank you to everyone who work on this upgrade and every person who donate for this !

🌱 One of the objectives of the center is to rehabilitate the animals that are brought to us.

Not an easy task! Especially for howler monkeys because these animals, very close to humans in terms of raising young, take care of their babies intensively the first year and do not reach adulthood until around 4 years old (and mature sexually around 7 years old!).

🐈‍⬛ In comparison, a kitten no longer needs its mother around 2 months and can reproduce around 6-10 months.

Without a "functional" mother (old enough to take care of young), it is up to the volunteers to play moms and dads!
A role that is often not unpleasant (although the amount of liquids soaked up by clothes can put some people off 😂).

🕊 However, you must be ready to cut contact quickly, as soon as the presence of a "mom" is no longer necessary. Indeed we do not want them to remain attached to humans if we want to be able to release them one day.

In these photos you can see the progress of our first group of howler monkeys who, having arrived as babies, have gradually progressed thanks to the efforts of Fred, workers and volunteers who spent a lot of time teaching them to eat leaves, climb trees, not lounge on the ground ...(mostly in order from older to most recent)

We are very proud to see them managing almost on their own now 🥰🦧🦧

🛠 Some hard work carried out by the volunteers !

La Cruz Verde centre runs largely thanks to the help of our many volunteers who give their time here!

Whether by decorating the commun areas with paint, making life easier by creating magnificent models of the place (thank you ❤️) Or simply looking after our residents with love, they give their best!

Thank you to you all 🥰

🐒 Kurry was found at the Central Market of Rurrenabaque, where he probably escaped from a family where he was being kept as a domestic pet. The market administrator called the centre and we were able to come pick him up.

🌶 Kurry, who’s got his name from his yellow-ish fur and distinct spice-like smell, spends his time with our capucino monkey group.

🦗 He is quite independent and a very good hunter, especially big juicy bugs !

🌳 You can easily spot him high in the trees with his very high-pitched calls.

He have a funny relationship with tyson, a capucins since he always take him as a vehicul to move around (staying on his back)

Tyson arrived very young at the centre when he was less than one month old. We believe his mother was shot and killed as Tyson has a small scar that looks like a bullet touched him.

🥊 Tyson is an adorable little fighter, which is where his name comes from! Always searching shanti or loki to wrestle

🎉 He is very playful with the others and enjoys jumping around on the floor and pushing his brothers over. He loves to nap on volunteers arms and talk to people by smiling with his teeth showing and screaming/squeaking.

Tyson can be easily scared, but still is very curious. He's the most attentive to human behavior and is always trying to copy us (he's now smashing rocks on us cause we show him how to open nuts with rocks 😅)

🚿He pees on people a lot, especially when he is excited or nervous.
