The discus is one of the most popular freshwater fish in the world, due to its unusual discoid shape and varied colors. Its colors vary depending on the species and wild specimens can have red, blue, green, brown, white and yellow tones, and there are currently about 600 domestic variations.
It seems to be more susceptible to infections such as parasitosis, mycoses, bacterioses, viruses and even ectoparasites.
Despite not being on the IUCN red list, the amount of discus in the wild has decreased on a large scale since the 1990s. The main factors for the population decline is the action of humans in their habitat, among them the capture for aquarium breeding.
